DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What to fill a pyramid with

Fill it with more pyramids and make a Sierpinski's pyramid.  It'll be completely useless, but since when has that ever stopped anyone?

My very first fort.  I didn't really understand what an evil biome was, ignored the warning pop-ups, and then was very annoyed when I had a full zombie invasion tearing through my fort within 9 months of embark.

You don't.  Dwarf Fortress is your only friend, from now on.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: August 15, 2023, 11:16:23 am »
My current project is setting up my undead prisoner zoo/ garbage disposal.  My Captain of the Guard doesn't actually seem to believe that criminals can be reformed, and, frankly, neither do I.  Whenever it's time for them to be released, he instead likes to cram the prisoners into cages, drop them on the floor, and then start cancellation-spamming that he can't release them because of an improper justice state, which I take to mean that he knows as well as I do that they're just going to do it again.  Gotta say, this is the first time me and my captain have really been on the same wavelength.  I like the cut of this guy's jib.

My original plan was going to be to just have all these fucking lowlifes beaten to death, but since my captain has graciously put them all into easily-linkable cages, for me, it's pretty obvious what I must do next.

Either I'm going to have each lever hooked up to their cage that will release them into the hallway where I can use a series of forbidden doors to force them over a retractable drawbridge, or I might make an alternate path that just dumps them into an arena pit where these undead losers can slowly go mad and start devouring each other.  They got away with 2 of my artifacts, and I was able to intervene and prevent a further 2 from leaving my fortress, so magma is far too quick a death for them.  I want it to both be painful and humiliating.  The only reason I have the death pit set up is as a contingency.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How to prevent monarch coming?
« on: August 15, 2023, 10:58:23 am »
I didn't know about the caravan thing being a requirement from classic, but I am on board with having a little more control over when the monarch comes.  Right now, it always feels like the king comes way too quickly.  I go from baron to count to duke then having a king so quickly that it feels like I spend half my time for 3 or 4 years just scraping together royal quarters because of how quick these things come.  I wish that either the requirements to hit the next level of nobility in your fortress was higher or that you had some more prompts to stem that flow, yourself.  As it is, I really find no benefit, whatsoever, of having a king in your fortress.  All it really does is give you another mouth to... have whine about not making enough toy hammers or whatever, and it also makes trade with your own civilization shrivel up to basically nothing.
