DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Life on an Island??

Since the newest version (.39) goblins will occasionally be at peace with your civilization and will thus send caravans.
Otherwise, they'll just siege you. If you really want to trade with the goblins, just keep generating worlds until you get one
where the dwarves are at peace with the goblins.

Bridges have done this for a long time my friend. Of course, many players have attempted to use this in interesting ways, but
unfortunately currently it acts upon objects and creatures rather randomly, sometimes sending them flying sideways off
the bridge. It can, however, be useful for defeating small amounts of enemies by stunning them temporarily.

Sorry, the best you can do in this version is wander around the entire map looking for him. There has been a lot of
talk about this, so it will probably be in a future version sometime.

Good idea, since happy nobles make less crazy demands that get your dwarves killed.

For that particular thing at least you go into a init file and change one setting from no to yes. I'm not so sure if there is a list of
the changes or not.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Funniest Names
« on: July 06, 2008, 09:32:00 pm »
Best deity name ever: Ted. Just Ted. He was most often depicted as a lizard and associated with muck.
Best Artifact: The Infinite Shriek of Saints. I guess they need a exorcist or something.
Also, Kon Decentbow: He was a human born in 777 and he ruled from the Purple Euphoria of the
Fabulous Coalition in Kissedgrooved. That guy had all the luck.
I also found a elf named Yarare Cheerfulgrowl and a store named the Joke of Good.

I always play as trollish barbarians, but one downside of them(other than their immense stupidly{They eat
fortune cookies and comment that they taste like ink}) is their relatively short lifespans. So I was wandering
around on level 25 or so of the Caverns of Chaos when I came upon a tension room filled with ghosts.
Normally, they would be no problem, but unfortunately I had already killed about 100 of them or so
and thus they were extremely powerful. They eventually aged me into dust... Hopefully the powering
up thing will be fixed soon, or when hell freezes over.

The best I've found is all the dwarves of my old fort in a nearby town as migrants. I tried attacking the old
mayor(who was in the drinking hall) and everyone attacked and killed me. I came back later, and they still
hadn't settled in.

Nice job there, Ahab. What are you going to do with him now, drown him? :D

Separate rooms? For me, every level of the fort is basically just a huge open cavern with some stuff in it.
I guess I haven't bothered with protecting myself from rampaging mood dwarves because I've never seen
one, and because I can normally get them what they want. Sure, it ain't that pretty, but it's efficient.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarven Aquatic Defense
« on: June 28, 2008, 10:44:56 am »
Based on research I have done myself, and replies on a different thread of mine, I have come up with
a effective dwarven defense strategy! Basically, the two most important parts are...
1. Underground rooms that are fillable with water that you can channel enemies through.
2. Military dwarves with good swimming skill.

Basically, the concept is based upon the facts that creatures with no swimming skill are
severely slowed down in water, and the fact that creatures who become stunned in water start to
drown. By fighting your enemies in a room filled with 5 or 6 depth water(not 7, the dwarves with drown!)
with dwarves with good swimming skill, the enemies will be very weakened compared to your dwarves.
Additionally, your dwarves will become more skilled by learning swimming, and if they manage to stun the
enemy, it will drown to death if there are no stairs nearby.

So, do you think this is a viable defensive strategy, or do you think it is the dumbest thing you
have ever heard? Take your pick!

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Rivers are dangerous!
« on: June 27, 2008, 06:14:30 pm »
Yeah, that happens a lot. Water in many places freezes at night and melts by day in adventure mode.
The same thing happens if you try to sleep on a hunk of ice at night. It melts and you fall in and drown.

I have seen an adventurer whose swimming speed was faster than his walking speed, so that one is possible.
Really? What level skill did he have in swimming?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's your awesomenest fortress name?
« on: June 25, 2008, 03:57:27 pm »
Random: The Candytower of Burning.
Custom: The Doomed Blacktower of Death. It was a appropriate name, as the location had a chasm, a cave, and
a volcano all filled with monsters. I sent everyone on a suicidal mission to kill the kobold spearmaster and
they didn't even damage him at all. Good times.

Or it could be like Rumpelstiltskin, they would demand your children in exchange for not sieging. Much less
dangerous for their kidnappers that way.
