  • Enchanter: Enchants books so people can use them. We'll need an XP farm to make this useful.

I think--haven't gotten a chance to actually check out the server--unless something has changed since this post on the mods that FactoryMod might make this a more literal farm than usual. Recipe here. To be sure the mod drops make the usual kind of farm valuable, but not in quite the same way.

I've never set up a mob farm, but common drops happen regardless of how the mob dies, right? So a passive farm is actually an option for generating XP (indirectly). Add hoppers and automagic storage and voila. Some kind of a dwarven death maze might be more interesting, though. Maybe set up a toggle (Inside the maze, obviously. Got to keep it secure.) to swap between modes?

EDIT: Only the top level enchanting recipes use mob drops. Only one recipe below that uses any kind of drop, and that's pork.

the first couple drawings of the meat tree looked like they were bristling with phalluses and were therefore canned

I guess they were the wrong kind of wood, huh?

I'm deeply excited by the potential for meat orchards. The real question, though, is whether there will be grass-cows to graze in meat-pastures. And what, if anything, in this scenario is vegan.

I'm not certain--it's been a while since I've played--but I think Antlions may have (have had?) softer spawning requirements than "be in a desert". I'm vaguely recalling my two-block deep cactus farm spawning antlions right by my house.

Hmm...how much self-sufficiency would you say is possible in this game? I've contemplated making a sort of Skyblock-style survival map: a small chunk of dirt with a single tree, floating in midair with a few scattered islands containing treasures and a small number of special blocks. Problem is that I don't know how many resources a player can produce on his own. The only one that comes to mind is wood. Maybe dirt if a Rod of Dirt can be found or bought. But other than that, selection is somewhat limited.

Little bit of Wiki poking adds:
  • Wood, like you said.
  • Plants and herbs, like beorn said. Also mushrooms, if that wasn't clear enough.
  • Fallen stars, ditto.
  • Lava and water, ditto ditto. Honey, too. Note this is maybe a way to make honey relevant as a healing item.
  • Antlions shoot sand at you, so a properly set-up shooting range makes that renewable. That also means glass and potions and so on are all renewable.
  • Cobwebs are only renewable in a spider nest, as far as I know.
  • Grass gives you seeds as a farmable ammo for blowpipes.
  • Living wood and leaves are both placeable with a wand and wood.

We have way too much identical mobs that deal collision damage; identical items that shoot arrows faster, swings brighter and stuff; a bunch of artifacts that enhance jumping to allow Megaman X-esque movement, and yet there's little use for that as you keep going up tiers.

God, yeah. To me, a lot of the interesting bits of Terraria are when platforming and movement are actually a challenge. Last time I started a new character I found the climbing claws to be really fun because they synergized with platforms and ropes and things without totally invalidating them. Grappling hooks are cool, and it's really great for a while after you get one because the game goes so much faster, but they mark a shift in the game where you never really need to worry about getting around ever again.

Other Games / Re: Transistor - The makers of Bastion go sci-fi

After reading this thread, I think I may be the only person who thought Bastion was just okay.

The thread's population is pretty self-selecting, remember. I liked it a bunch, but not enough to ever do NG+, for instance. (At some point I should probably go ahead and get the second ending...) I'm excited to see where Transistor goes! Because the art looks sweet, the sound is neat, and the gameplay looks like something I'll enjoy. I really don't see the point in pre-ordering it, though.

Looks awesome, I wants it. I always loved getting a biosphere world with bridges turned off, and zeppelinning my way between them.

Is there a zeppelin mod that doesn't break anything? Last time I went on a modding spree I couldn't find one, but that was a while ago.

Dark Souls. What other game has a capra demon?

Cataclysm: Dark Super Sonic Zelda: Ocarina of Dwarves, it's right there.

If we wanted wizard powers, we'd have stayed willful!
You say that like we're gaming our own emotions to promote effective study habits. I don't think we've mastered that degree of foresight. We're not even 15 years old yet!
Well that's why we gotta spam divination next time, right?

Ominous spoilered chatter implies something's going on, but I would think would be a good compromise between those who want to enjoy the game and haven't played it yet and those who want to enjoy the game and have.

What if everyone who didn't mind being spoiled started having parallel, irrelevant conversations alongside their on-topic posts? So spoilery choices can have spoilers and not look any different from insignificant choices having discussions about cheese.

And anyway

All that said, I'm all for a Victorian colony sim including rollerskates. On the one hand, it lets colonists escape from the slobbering hordes from beyond time. On the other hand, if they don't escape, the slobbering hordes how have rollerskates.

Y'know, this would be a really excellent time to have an experienced witch on tap before making this very important decision. It's too bad we don't know anyone like that, much less one on good terms with the local priestess. Truly a pity that there's no way of checking in with someone before making what is probably an irrevocable choice that could lead to eternal damnation and centuries of darkness.

Alpha is out for backers. It's pretty damn fun for something on version 0.01.
