Simmura the Priestess signing up.
Glory to the House of Carpets. Intern Oneir clocking in.

Oneir was sent by upper management in order to serve as quality assurance, and upon arrival was promptly assured of the quality of the ratman she'd landed on top of.  She was briefly mourned, but her resurrection put a damper on the funerary planning.  Such a downer.
Glad to hear I'm being a productive member of society. :0 Those ratmen aren't going to reassure themselves.

Sorry to bug, but did I ever get dorfed as that Priestess? If not, and if the temple's filled up, I'll take the first interesting hero from the embassy (the barbarian's fine) with the least accurate name you care to come up with.

My god is this is making me nostalge so hard. Speaking of gods, put in me in for a Priestess if that temple ever gets up and running.

Is there some way to move around aside from mindlessly walking right and teleporting?

Because I've run into a few maps where it seems like you're expected to be able to move, especially since

I wonder if you could spin those chicken-rending render glitches into, like, hotspots of eldritch geometry. You think it looks like it would make a good end-table for the mayor, but suddenly all the urchins you send to pick it up are twelve feet tall, angular and inside-out. So you just use them as end-tables instead.

Thanks for the help. :D Some of that's new, some of it it's just good to see I'm not insane for think about.

Regarding variance, and something I forgot to include in that earlier post:
When I last tried to set this embark up, I ran into a couple of biome issues. Rather than the (pretty trivial) "too many subregions" issue, DF was consistently failing to place enough of every single biome. Consequently, a given set of parameters would run around a thousand failed worlds before suggesting something was wrong, since it wasn't failing any given check regularly. So what's the deal there? I remember there was some other error that cropped up even if I completely nuked the minimum region and square numbers. Obviously I'll do science to it, but if anyone else has confronted this in the past I'd love to hear what you did to fix it. :)

One last quick question: are there any tricks to generating magnetite over the other (apparently more common) ores of iron? There's just something about enormous piles of ore that's so tempting...

So I have what may be an interesting problem, or may be impossible, or may just be me being needy. You be the judge.

I'd like to have a fort where I can catch Giant Lions, Giant Tigers and Gigantic Pandas (oh my). That means some sort of Tropical Savanna/Grassland/Shrubland, some sort of Tropical Forest/Shrubland/Swamp and a Temperatre Forest. All high savagery for greatest fun.

(Ideally it'd also have flux, iron, a flat volcano, sand, a brook and a pony, but I'd settle for "metals that don't suck" and leave my perfectionism at the door.)

I haven't had a lot of luck with this, partly because I'm not sure how to search a map for this. So, world gen questions:
  • I want some fairly varied regions next to each other, how much variance should I pump into rain and drainage? Would the mesh be better?
  • When generating for this kind of thing, do you go for many small worlds or one big world? Does that change when you're aiming for a volcano embark?
  • While temperate and tropical biomes coexist? What sort of temperature gradient should I be looking at to make that work?
  • How much mineral scarcity should I aim at before flux stops genning properly?

Any help you can give me here is hugely appreciated. I love looking at the stuff that shows up in this thread. :D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Viable eggs?
« on: June 04, 2012, 06:34:30 pm »
As I understand it, if you have a male of the same species and nothing kicks the female off of the nest box your eggs should hatch eventually. Be sure to forbid them from 't', or find some other way to keep dwarves from walking off with them.

Ah, thanks. A bit more research suggests that the Dark Lance (>Trident>Spear) zaps everything in a seven block line. Which is...pretty impressive. Aforesaid research also makes me really excited for the Demon Scythe spell. Just...as soon as I get to hell.

So it's possible to make a sandgun. Ten antlion mandibles, uh, illegal gun parts, and something else.

I kid you not.

Now where the crap does one find illegal gun parts? Kill the Arms Dealer somehow?

Also, I got the fancy spear thing and the Guide Voodoo Doll. The doll lets you slay the guide yourself, and the spear is just amazing.

Pulled the spear out of a chest in Hell, btw.

Many NPCs now sell different things at night! (And after different bosses are killed.) This means that you can buy Corrupt Seeds and Vile Powder instead of Grass Seeds and Purification Powder from the Dryad at night (first time I saw that, I assumed it was very inconveniently bugged for where I was gearwise), Unholy Arrows from the Arms Dealer once you kill...I think Eater of Worlds, a bunch of nice weapons during the Blood Moon, and Illegal Gun Parts at night, possibly after either the Eye or Eater is killed.

What's the Dark Lance like? ...hell, what are spears like?

Werewolfwerewolf. Werewolfwolf? In any case, a werewolf, cursed to turn into a werewolf-werewolf hybrid under the full moon.

While I'm already gonna get a copy on release, I'd like to thank hemmingjay and everyone else who donated a copy for doing this. :)

Most seriously seconded.

He cannot drown.

I plan to just drop him into a large pit, but judging by the dev LP's (when they dropped him in a pit, and walled over it) that will not work. He ended up back at spawn.

It turns out, the first room you make (back walls, door, light source, whatever else) gets claimed by the guide. I think that's what happened in the Dev LP, they finished the house, so he ported in while off screen. My plan is to lock him in my basement, or at least far away from any sensitive doors.

Even if they fix his (NPC's?) AI in the future, I'm keeping the guide in my basement. Just 'cause.
