Well, I guess I'm proud to have discovered this quirk. It was awfully weird when I saw it first. Didn't occur to me that it was taking the ground tile color.  :-\

Rather than explain, here are some images of how I lay out my fortress. Designed for ease of expansion, not necessarily efficiency. Also designed for relatively small numbers of dwarves, though the size of the residential floor might suggest otherwise.

Again, not built for large numbers of dwarves, or efficiency when the levels start to spread out.

The biggest problem I've had with making new monsters was rainbow symbols. The ASCII character would change colors every now and then.

I think I had the color set to 128 or something.

Most recent fort placed me next to a chasm. Which completely bisects the map in half. Top to bottom, north to south. Only lost one man (my miner/diplomat) to a giant cave swallow, while preparing the entrance to my fortress.

I can't remember now, but I think there might have been magma and water.

On the other side of the bottomless hole. Bridgebuilding is currently under preparation. I need more than 6 people dwarves..

I did run into my dread spiders, but they spawned of the other side of the chasm. Thank goodness. I still don't know how powerful they are, but I like this fort and don't want to risk it.

Fist time joining a community fortress. This should be good!

I'd like the Furnace Operator if at all possible. Second choice the Engraver. Name, Steelion. A quiet sort, is happiest when he's just doing his job.

Control/alt/delete might do what you're wanting. You'll be able to go back to your save without abandoning or overwriting.

Ok, sorry to bump, but I was wondering how to increase their numbers. Genned a few worlds with 8500-9000 Spiders each, and played rocky wasteland maps for a couple years- not a single spider. Lots (lots) of camels, but no spiders. I'd really just like to make sure they work the way I want them, so I want them to be more common, at least for a while.

Is it [FREQUENCY]?

Very much new at this   :(

Yellow 'X' trails for me. Only when there's no minimap (which I try and keep open so I can keep an eye out for migrating herds of animals, trying to find one of my custom mobs eventually). And the little %'s and 's and whatevers that are scattered around the dark don't have the problem. It's definitely just the blank spaces.

As far as I know, magma itself will not slow down your game. The temperature calculations that come along with it, however, will.
