Something rather strange: I was apparently placed against a player called "NEW" in match # -1, which I won by default. The only thing I can figure here is that we started with an uneven number of players and I was the 'lucky' one who got a round 2 start.

Indeed that is what happened. I think it chose you because you are the highest seeded (used global ranking as the seed)

Later rounds will have different maps.
Orb, mine did the same thing. I restarted the game and now it isn't telling me there's a move to be played. Try rebooting? Maybe if you do it too it'll work properly.

EDIT: So we talked around on the IRC and apparently we've got a pretty obscure bug. Volatar, as the tourney admin can you force players to forfeit their matches?

I can force a forfeit either way as well as forcing a restart of that game. Just tell me which games need restarts and I will do so when I am next on.

And the first Bay 12 Frozen Synapse Tournament has begun!

Wravburn, sadly, neglected to play a game on UK1, and as such was not able to be added to the tournament. This left us with 15 players, so FlyingDice gets to proceed to round 2 for free.

At the last moment I realized that I did not have time to set up custom, symmetrical Disputed matches, so I had to make the whole tournament Dark Extermination. Should be fun anyways :)

EDIT: And then, of course, since I didn't do that, the first match has rocket launchers. Argh.

Friday, 7am EST. AKA 8 hours from now.

This is an experiment. I have no idea how timeliness is managed, and hope the starting time doesn't screw us over. Its easy enough to just try again properly on Saturday if this screws up.

The only ingame requirement is that you must have played a game on UK1.

There are still 24 hours left to sign up for the tournament.

DotA I know. What is MOBA?

Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. A term created by one of the DotA creators/contributors to give a name to all the DotA-likes that are popping up these days.

How would everyone feel about customized maps with a greater number of units than normal? (thinking 6-8 each side) Symmetrical of course. This would allow for a lot of unit variety and possibly very exciting matches.

Dear gog no Disputed, please. Horrifically unbalanced + camptastic objective. Honestly, I'd also probably want to veto hostages, just because of how easy I've found it to be to use my units as a distraction while the hosties sprint behind cover in round 2 and get away scott free. Hell, I've had matches where my units never fired a shot, because the map layout let me get the hostages out without the defender being able to block every route.

Disputed is balanced just fine. What the heck are you talking about?

Sorry I didn't mention it earlier, but Hostage has been out of the question since the beginning. The hostage rescuer has a 2/3rds win rate across all Hostage games.

I need to try an EU account, I suspect it's closer then the NA one. Even though i live in NA, east coast.

It isn't. The Atlantic Ocean is a lot wider than the United States.

"The distance between Los Angeles and New York City is 2462 miles."
"From New York to London it is about: approx. 3460 Miles."

You will see the ping difference. NA will be 60-80 on the East Coast. EUW will be between 110-130. Not too bad, and you can get used to the lag after a bit.

Really, it comes down to where your friends are.

Looks like the ingame tournament system is exactly what we need. Put in the players and it generates brackets for us, and allows us to specify the map for each round.

This means we can have several different gametypes for flavor if we want :)

My problem with secure is that it can come across really boring for the defender. I haven't really encountered that exciting bidding phase that you speak of. As I have said before, I like Disputed.

If worst comes to worst and we can't decide we will just run extermination.

Thanks guys, I think we will definitely be doing dark. *pumps fist since the side we wanted to win won out*

I will see if I can get on in the morning and give the tournament system a test with my and my sister's accounts. I'll be honest: I discovered the tournament button, saw that it requires a list of players, and didn't delve further into it. I don't know how it actually works (or if it even works at all). I will see what it does in the morning (oh crap. That's 5 hours away. I better go to sleep soon D: )

Preferably the system will allow us to specify not only gamemode, but specific map seeds that we preselect for balance. (Would be best if we can find some with a few duplicate games on them already.)

Even if the ingame tournament system is totally broken or not useful for us I can always run it manually. Brackets aren't particularly hard to do.

So are we just going to do Dark Exterm. with set team composition?

Dark Exterm. can tend to be unfair for one player. Ergo: Shotgun guy 3 paces away from a rifle.

I would honestly prefer light/dark disputed. You get different units(different strategies!), you start on opposite sides of the map, and its all about map control. Exploiting your unit composition to its best is key to victory.

I also honestly prefer light over dark. Dark tends to be more luck based, though it has its own merits.

Disputed is honestly my favorite game mode for those very reasons. It's the only mode with real dynamic map control (secure is essentially camping).

I prefer dark over light myself, as more mind games and cleverness can result, but I have no problem with either.
