DF Suggestions / Mining without pick?

I think it should be possible to mine without pick, at least through soil.  I have read somewhere that really early people dig using pieces of rock to chip of another rock.  Now, digging through solid rock without mine should take a ridiculous amount of time (for legendary, 1 tile per month maybe).  For soil, it should be slower but doable (you can dig soil with your hand).
This could help with the problem of someone losing all their pick before caravan arrives.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dumping equipments?

Okay, this may be a dumb question.  But if I mark an armor for dumping (not owned by a dwarf) that is currently being worn, will it gets dumped?

I have a very busy fortress, so I'm just wondering if this is the result of my hauler busy with other things or you can't grab stuff off people.

Just a quick question, How fast can aquifer absorb water?  Also, do they absorb water from the side or only from the top?

1 and 2 = where water will reach
Given the above
Will water from both 1 and 2 be absorbed?  or just 2?  Because in the past I've embarked in a desert with two separate regions, one has a multi-level aquifer while the other does not.  And I tried to versions...

Version 1 does not appear to flood, but will splash out 1/7 water in square next to the hole in the ground.  Version 2 does not seems to drain at all (or very slowly) and will fill up the space above before overflowing
