I'm struggling to find a stereotype for DC here. Mayhaps a crime-ridden crackhead city, but there are other cities out there that embody that much better than DC. A little help here?

A city of Northern charm and Southern efficiency.

Seven is weird like that.

It's the number of Yhwh. Now we're all going to explode in freak lightning bolt accidents.

DUDE! DO NOT PUT VOWELS IN THAT!

69 cents at the gas station across the parking lot, and those come in 32 and 40 oz sizes.

Really the question isn't how much a hamburger costs but rather how much does Vester pay in rent. If I bussed tables for a gourmet restraunt I wouldn't presume I deserve enough money to eat there.

And Job's wife isn't killed IIRC, as she's around to say "Bless God and die," when he suffers boils. Satan was claiming Job was only faithful because things were going well for him. The prevailing notion I'm getting from detractors is that "God is such a jerk to do that." This presumes the detractor has some moral imperitive over God, that somehow they have a better understanding of right and wrong than the creator of the universe. This is what the quote refutes. All of Job's friends were assuming bad things happened to Job because he committed some sin, and the book argues that isn't the case, that bad things happen to good people. Thus the poor or sick are deserving of charity and respect since they are not being punished by their station. You can see what the opposite mentality causes in India, where the fabulously wealthy feel no obligation to drop so much as a penny to a beggar because those people are working off their karma, and to interfere would only mean more time in punishment. So the book of Job exists to stress that human beings do not have a moral imperitive over God, ever, and that good people can suffer and bad people can thrive. In the end Job recieves twice as much as he started with and lives some 140 more years with his wife, so his loss is repaid double. However Job lamented that he wished there was some arbitrator between man and God so that he could plead his case. That arbitrator came to be with Christ.

So yeah, that's the book of Job.

My wife served me pancakes in bed, let me sleep in until noon, and after a few hours alone in the house playing Company of Heroes I got to "celebrate how you became a father". Afterwards I don't even have to make the bed or a second pot of coffee.

I love this holiday.

One denomination doesn't care how you treat other people. Your dedication to God is proven by how financially successful your household is. If you are one of God's chosen, you will be wealthy.

That's actually an old Hebrew belief as well, which the Book of Job was written to counteract.

Namely, that good things happen to good people, and bad things happen to bad people. Job was supposed to show that, you know what, sometimes life just fucks you up the arse no matter how virtuous and law-abiding you are.

I'm pretty sure that all that anyone's going to get from that on a first read through is that God is a colossal dickhead and you should probably just wash your hands of the whole thing because both Heaven and Hell will ruin your shit no matter how pious you are.

Man do I hate the Book of Job.

Where were you when the Earth was made?

Everyone thinks Kentuckians are white, gun-crazy, dirt poor, beats their wife, and drinks Budweiser.

Eastern Kentucky gives the rest of the state a bad reputation.  :P

Eastern Kentucky is bonefide hillbillies. If you are implying hillbillies give the rest of a state a bad reputation, you either don't know what hillbillies are actually like or have a skewed idea of what a good human being is.

And California should really be split into three states, as should Texas.

And those who are grateful and God-fearing in spite of receiving very little are the most virtuous of all, IE the widow's mite.

Freedom isn't an excuse, its the God-given natural state of man.
It most certainly is not. Humans are social animals, they naturally form societies. Societies have rules, if you go around punching people your society will stop you, not to mention the natural inclination of humans to judge others. The nature of humanity fundamentally opposes many aspects of freedom.

The 'natural' state of man is still free, thanks to a notion called the social contract. Even if one is born into say, feudal England, one can opt to not pay taxes and become an outlaw, removing themself from society in order to return to the natural state of freedom. Society might persecute such persons by law or otherwise, but this is the projection of force and an attempt to subvert those living in the natural state.

I appreciate your intellectual honesty, Grakelin. Its a lot easier to play Punch The Christian than agree with one, as I'm sure you know.

And for the record, I believe that even Adolph Hitler could be saved, since I disagree with say, Catholics that suicide is unforgiveable. I would doubt very much that he was, however, since I am quite certain he was athiest.

Nikov, aren't you supposed to be a Christian somewere along the line?
I'm pretty sure that charity and helping your equals is not optional.
And taking freedom as an excuse isn't going to help your cause.
You know you're believing in a god that will judge you on how you lived, right?

Its a trap!

Yes, I am a Christian.
No, charity and helping my equals (what does that even mean) is optional to salvation.
Freedom isn't an excuse, its the God-given natural state of man.
I am fully aware I am judged based upon how I live.

However...

You may not be a Christian and I will not force its ideals on you by declaring it your duty to behave as one.
What I choose to do out of charity is my own matter and not to be decided by social duty, as this nullifies it.
Taking freedom from others simply because they have a useful skill is not justifiable.
My salvation is not determined by how I live.

I think I should have just said "Encourage vegetarianism."

In other news today, the population of Latin America is now 90% below the UN minimum nutritional intake due to a surge in vegitarianism eliminating staple sources of protein and fats through poultry, eggs and fish. Local farmers struggle to keep up with demand for beans as prices soar and urban workers begin demonstrating for price controls...
