The "crowned table" part might be caused by more than one chair per table. Dwarves enjoy to eat alone, even if there's 120 other dwarves in the same room.

Also, Losing is Fun. It's true that losing your fortress is always a great moment, and surviving deadly food crisis and heartache inducing ambushes is what make the game more than a city builder.

It will be awesome, yes. I'd love a real water consumption, right now you can provide water to an entire fortress with a simple 1*1*1 pit of water.

About the amount 2 tiles (I'm assuming you meant tiles) means 14 unit of water. Currently, water is actually carried around (but not depleted from the original source) by buckets, which can carry 7 units of water IIRC, so I guess 14 units is a bit low. 20 units (or, for the sake of simplicity, 21 units) will be more appropriate.
Also, it could be simpler to pit/pond using barrels.

Hm, we're a bit off topic.

My pleasure. Don't be afraid to ask, people here are usually friendly and open to questions.

... So basically... this is an awesome - huge update... Before another one in the series of impossibly huge updates!? Damn.

The current update (yes, the one that have been worked on for 1 year and which is still far away from release) represent 6 out of 49 feature planned on Dev_next, which list the near-future goals for DF's development. So it's safe to say that yes, the next release will also take some time.

But I guess that Toady is currently working on a lot of underground (haha) mechanics who'll speed up the programming of the other updates.

and where do i find valuable minerals like gold?

Depend on where you embarked. DF generate regions according to real world data (well, probably a bit more generously, because platinum or gold seems to be abundant in the game), so you won't necessarily have every  metal or mineral on your map. It's quite possible to never have iron or gold for instance, and it might even be possible to have a really "empty" map without any metal or precious gem (I'm not sure if it already happened tough).

Dig more, you'll eventually find something, most of the time.

When the trader comes again, will i get new dwarves as well? as my fishers little home is now empty, not too mention all the other rooms i made while i was bored.

Immigrants come every year, or even several time per year, given the merchants were able to return to the mountainhomes to report about your fortress.

There's 3 release, IIRC. The next one include everything in this topic, the other create real armies on the map, and the third replace our currently generated sieges by real armies. Don't quote me on that though, since the page where it was displayed seems to be no longer findable.

Anyway, the ability to control armies will be implemented, but that's not something we'll see until the next year, and we would be lucky if it's not worst than that.

Could be nice if dwarves actually consumed water from pools or reservoirs. They don't do it, right ?

Lap : All that is already in the dev_logs, be it in the next years (Dev_Next), in the next decades (Dev_V1) or in the next centuries (Dev_Future) :p

DF Suggestions / Re: Regarding Digging enemies
« on: September 12, 2009, 12:54:30 pm »
The same way they know where your dwarf are, even if the only path to them is through a door at the other side of the mountain they never seen. We'll have to wait for an AI / Pathfinding rewrite to get enemies / dwarves that doesn't omnisciently know where every dwarf / sock is on the map.

Also, last year I posted a poll about this type of enemies, and the result was pretty clear (71 % For).

They were still a strong debate about the specifics, but overall, it's safe to say most players want enemies that dig in a way or another.

If I remember correctly, the game will be V1 when 100 core items will be completed. Or when all the Dev_V1 items are done.

Digging enemies will be pretty much needed at some time or another, because even if the goblins were able to build bridged, climb up walls, disarm traps etc, there will still be the possibility of having only one entry to your fortress, and literally wall it off. Given you have a indoor reservoir without connection to the surface (and since the water isn't actually consumed), you can pretty much keep them out for ever.

Well then again, there could be way to fight against that. Maybe goblins / trolls will be able to destroy built walls, or the water will evaporate / be consumed over time. I hope there will alway be a "spear VS shield" fight in the game : when a defense is put in place, a counter-measure is found, etc.

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress Talk #3: Your Questions!
« on: September 06, 2009, 09:38:15 am »
I don't remember if someone talked about it before but...

Right now, DF is in Alpha. But everyone is aiming for the V1 and there's no mention of a Beta state before. So my question is : Will the V1 be the "Beta" version of DF or will there be an intermediate stage between the alpha and the v1 ?
