Law of doors :

Building door in high-traffic areas is useless, since a dwarf will eventually drop something that will block it open. And the items blocking door are instantly classified as "ultra low priority" for haulers, meaning it will never be picked up. At least, not before the first wave of what you want to seal off (miasma, goblins, water...)

Laws of remove building :

"Remove building" is the HIGHEST job of all. That's all.

Laws of refuse hauler :

No matter how much people you draft into the "refuse hauler" cohort, the large roach remain will still spread his violet cloud of despair before someone took it away.

Laws of trades :

As the years go by, your broker negotiatior's skill will increase. Sadly, the usefulness of trade will also decrease, so by the time you can safely reject counter-offers and approach a trader profit of 0, you won't need import good any longer.

Second laws of elven trees :

The probability that an elven diplomat appear to tell you to reduce your wood consumption is actually inversely proportionnal to the number of trees you're really cutting.

Other Games / Re: WURM Online
« on: June 27, 2009, 12:04:32 pm »
Ok, so I tried to return to Wurm today, and it was virtually unplayable : the game is awfully coded (nicer than this winter, but... eww... my computer run Crysis in medium-high settings, and I've got only 8 FPS in wurm with "normal" settings. What does it take to run this game smoothly ?), but the most annoying this is... the starter server, Golden Valley, is totally unbearable. I mean, there's like an ARMY of bear surrouding the Starter city. The entrance of GD look like an animal cemetery, filled with bear and wolf corpses. You can't leave the town without being swarmed by legion of animals.

So I'm considering going premium to escape this madness, and I wonder (TL;DR) :

Has anyone tested the new server, Freedom Islands ? It seems really great, but if there's the same bear respawn problem that in GV, it doesn't even worth purchasing. Thanks !

It will be nice to see what dwarves build by themselves, but Toady had to re-program all the AI to reach this.... But yes, it will be entertaining to see how they carve out their places, what do they build, how do they deal with invaders....

So that's what I was thinking, the many dev notes about squad, entities, burrows, etc. confused me.

I think even toady can't guess how long will the different parts of the release take to implement. IIRC, he said he'll try to finish before christmas, but he wasn't sure at all if this will be possible.

Well, this may be because english isn't my mother tongue so the dev note may have confused me, but am I the only one to think that all theses new features, although great, seems very complicated ? Some of these even seem pretty redundant (burrows and squad buildings for instance). I hope it won't turn into a mess of menus and sub-menus with awkward interfaces and controls... It's nice to be able to micro-manage your fort, but it won't be that great if the final interface look like a NASA flight simulator.

It's described as a "Modern" map of Europe (which mean "after cold war"). This explain why there's almost no country left in Eastern Europe.

And yes, Estonia and Finland are both "finnish" countries. And since the baltic countries are often seen as an unique block, if Estonia is in northern Europe, Lithuania and Latvia should be northern as well.

Amazing that he survived for so long.... the lost of all limbs should have caused a major bleeding.

Hot springs ? Be sure to include a rocky biome to avoid aquifers.

Ok, to solve all this North / Central / East mess, I just checked Wikipedia, and there's a map here which divide Europe into the following parts :

Northern Countries : Extended scandinavia (Norway, Sweden and Denmark + Iceland + Finland + Feroes islands) AND Baltic countries.

Eastern Countries : Belarus, Ukraine, Romania... Russia is also included.

Southern (or Meridional) Countries : Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, but also Cyprus, Malta, Macedonia and Balkans countries, but also Bulgaria (yep, I mispelled it) and Moldavia.

Western (or Occidental) Countries : France, Swiss, United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

Central Countries : Germany, Poland, Hungary, Austria, etc.

So please stick to this map. I don't totally agree with it (the Eastern Europe is very small right now), but if we don't want to screw the poll any longer, we have to find a definition of what are the European regions.

Ah yes, interresting.

I have to admit that, from Europe, USA look like a large and rather uniform country, that may be divided into a "west coast" with sunny beaches and surfers and canyons and palmtrees, and a "east coast" with wooden houses and grey industrial cities and paddle steamer on large rivers and snowy conifers forests. The usual stereotype also include central plains with stupid patriotic farmers, indians in camps and neverending freeways.

Yeah, I know, that's terrible.

The game being hard and challenging.

Surviving winter being an accomplishment again.

Ah... Yeah. Right now, everything is SO easy it isn't even funny. Goblin armies come two or three times before giving up and retreat after a few (VERY few) casualties, Megabeasts are cheaper than ever (The multiname hydra who was uncounscious when it arrived on my map because one of it toe were missing... what the fuck ? A giant monster who killed several people, falling on the groud due to the pain caused by a cut toe ?), food is ridiculously abundant (and expensive when it come to selling it).... If you don't take into account Lava and Water mistakes, nothing will trouble you anymore.

Oh, also, I'm looking forward to the new ways of organising your fortress (burrow for instance). I like to think at my fortress like a living, nearling organic structure, with the dwarves making it live, and it sure can help.

I'm in the US.  Don't we get more than one option, too?  :p  Culturally speaking, there are serious differences.

Huh... I was expecting something like that (with californian people :p), but my knowledge about America isn't large enough to cut it into regions :) At least, I separated you from Canadian and Mexicans.

Never thought there will be so much Oceanian players.

Also, sorry for the lack of a Central Europa, I included some of central countries in the western part (germany, netherlands..), and the rest in the eastern part, but that's probably innacurrate. I'm changing it.
