So I guess the best way to level up Dodge as well as Music would be to go to the Factory with a Guitar and play music at the Non-Union Workers, then. My strategy of the Vegan Co-op doesn't work QUITE as well... it still works, but you have to watch out for the occasional enemy with a gun, and most of the Conservatives you encounter run away. But it's pretty safe to do at the Vegan Co-op, since you rarely encounter more than one Conservative at a time, and if someone DOES have a gun, it's pretty easy to run away from them. Or you can risk it and level up your Dodge skill against them (usually I think it's a .38 Revolver)... it levels up fairly fast with them shooting at you, and if you're good at dodging, they might not hit you at all and run out of bullets without you getting shot even once. But if they DO shoot you, you can get permanent damage such as losing an eye or spleen or something... not a very good turn of events.

Insofar as A) it's got a gamestopper bug, and B) less moddable safehouses per city, I wouldn't think of NLCS as mainline yet.

Which bug in it is the gamestopper bug? I'd be interested, haven't heard of it having a gamestopper bug before. And it might have less moddable safehouses PER city but it has many more moddable safehouses overall if you play National LCS. Anyway National LCS is the trunk version, it's not a branch like Stalinist Crime Squad or some of the others, so it's the mainline version in my opinion at least, although perhaps it's still at an alpha or beta stage and not yet ready for a stable release. But by mainline I mean, it's the main version of the game, not some branch or fork or something, I don't mean to say that it's stable, although it actually is pretty close to stable at least as far as many of the bugs I have fixed all being fixed now (yes there are more bugs but the number of bugs is decreasing). And I did accidentally introduce one bug but somebody else luckily fixed it since then (I still have a pretty high ratio of bugs fixed to bugs introduced, despite introducing one bug that I know of and possibly others that I don't know about).

In defense of the Corporate CEOs, they DO know quite a bit about how to run a business, and have the high Business skill to do it. As for security, that's not their specialty. And every business cuts corners to increase its profit margins. The only way they could GET that wealthy is by cutting corners and doing things on the cheap. If they spent loads of money on security, CEOs would have much less money for drunken cocaine-fueled orgies with prostitutes. And the Elite Security types they employ are like Blackwater... privately owned armies, basically, with military training that was funded by taxpayer dollars, prior to their early retirement from the military.

Anyway, look at it like this. A bunch of Roman emperors all got assassinated in ancient Rome. So what did the next guy who became emperor after that do to protect himself? Well, whatever it was, it didn't work, since he got assassinated TOO. And that just happened again and again and again, and it took forever for the Roman Empire to develop proper security, since it was almost impossible to get all the security guards to actually be loyal to whoever the current emperor was, and not be susceptible to bribes and such from ambitious people seeking to become the next emperor. (I am traveling overseas and I'm in Rome, Italy right now.) And in modern times, we've had, what, like 4 U.S. Presidents who got assassinated throughout American history? Even though they have better security than anyone else in the country. Corporate CEOs don't have security remotely as good as U.S. Presidents, in the real world. The REAL thing that keeps Corporate CEOs relatively safe is that there are so many CEOs of major corporations that killing just 1 of them wouldn't have much of an impact on the corporate system, and they basically have strength in numbers. That is something the U.S. President doesn't have, since there is only 1 U.S. President at a time, making whoever has that job a much bigger target than any run-of-the-mill CEO. I mean, I have seen Stephen Colbert and billionaire CEO Richard Branson physically fight each other by throwing water in each other's faces on TV. I doubt Richard Branson has any real security with him when he's on the Colbert Report... if Stephen Colbert wanted to, he could probably have any guest on his show that he doesn't like EXECUTED... even famous and wealthy guests. Luckily for the rich and famous, most talk show hosts are not assassins. Except for Conan. He's a barbarian... before becoming a talk show host, he went around raping and pillaging. You can tell he's a Viking because he has the red hair, which strikes fear into the hearts of the Vikings' enemies.

Those are very impressive stats for Charisma, Persuasion, Intelligence, and Law. You should do very well in court. But besides having a lawyer with really good stats (in this case, yourself), you also need a good judge and good jury to get the optimal outcome, if you're facing a huge amount of criminal charges. Having a Sleeper judge presiding over the case is a MUST. If I recall correctly, they prevent any witnesses from testifying against you and they grant leniency in sentencing if somehow you are found guilty. As for the jury being on your side, there are 2 variables for that, mainly. 1 is how Liberal or Conservative the people in the country are. The more Liberal the populace is, the more favorable the jury will be, while a Conservative populace will be quite harsh on you if they end up as the jury. Another factor is something that only the expensive $5,000 lawyer can do... he can tilt the jury in your favor. He has that ability. That doesn't happen if you defend yourself. This is basically a reward for players who spend the money on the expensive lawyer (spending that much money ought to help you out more than just a little, after all... and it does). That being said, the expensive lawyer isn't perfect. Your character probably has better stats as far as arguing in court is concerned (Charisma+Persuasion+Intelligence+Law), plus the expensive lawyer runs the risk of having his arch-nemesis super-prosecutor show up... which is very very bad. So spending the money on an expensive lawyer is actually a bit like gambling, it might not always work out in your favor, except, unlike gambling, it USUALLY does.

Curses / Re: Captured Safe House
« on: October 11, 2013, 04:04:22 pm »
Well, this means each LCS safehouse that gets commandeered by the CCS needs to have a CCS Lieutenant stationed there, obviously. That would be the best fix for this bug. Of course, CCS Lieutenants on the CCS maps are spawned at specific map locations specified in the maps. So fixing this would mean editing the maps so that ALL safehouses have CCS Lieutenant spawning locations... and the CCS Lieutenant spawning grounds would only be active if the CCS controls the site. When a site is under LCS control or gang control or not rented out to anyone, there would be no evidence of any CCS Lieutenant spawning grounds anywhere.

Interestingly, I haven't encountered this problem... for some reason the CCS never raids me, even though I raid their hideouts and kill plenty of their guys. So I've never had the CCS take over any of my hideouts, or even try...

I train Dodge at the Vegan Co-op. I find one of the few Conservatives there and attack them with a Guitar, playing Music at them. I keep doing this at the Vegan Co-op on that day until my Music and Dodge skills both go up by 1. Then I come back the next day and the day after that, again and again, until my Music and Dodge skills are both maxed out. Best thing about this is, it's totally legal, the place doesn't get shut down, takes less than a month to max out both those skills, and it's pretty safe too, unless you run into someone with a gun (usually a Musician). If you run into someone with a gun at the Vegan Co-op, just run away from them and fight someone else with your Guitar. Most of the people there are unarmed or if they do have weapons they are not very good weapons.

I suppose letting Non-Union Workers at the Factory attack you using Chains might work even better. My strategy of leveling up Dodge at the Vegan Co-op has the disadvantage that most of the Conservatives you run into there (who aren't even that common at that site) just run away from you, and few are willing to fight you. I think there might be a bit of an imbalance with Conservatives running away from battle too often. I already corrected this for Conservatives with juice over 200, but Conservatives with lower juice are still quite prone to running away, unless they have weapons or "animal gloss".

Animal gloss is what guard dogs, tanks, and genetic monsters all have, basically it means they aren't human, so nudity rules don't apply to them, their ages aren't in the same range as human ages, they never die of old age and can therefore potentially live forever, they don't need weapons equipped since they all have special attacks, talking to them has very different options than talking to humans, they are immune to verbal attacks that target heart/wisdom/juice, they have zero effect on public opinion if they end up as sleepers Promoting Liberalism, they are fearless and never back down from a fight, and so on, many things different between creatures with animal gloss and creatures that are human, MOST of them advantageous for having LCS members with animal gloss. So guard dogs, tanks, genetic monsters, they are very useful to have as LCS members. But not as Sleepers! As ACTIVE members. They are useless as Sleepers.

Added bonus: Even one skilled hacker will generate material for the Liberal Guardian faster than you could ever hope to publish it.  In fact it will make you wish that you could publish multiple articles at a time every month.  (That was a hint for the devs)

:)
Feature request noted. ;)

Oh, and I think the number of major articles you can publish a month ought to equal the number of hideouts with Printing Presses the LCS controls at that moment in time. So, if you have 1 hideout with a Printing Press, you'd still only get to publish 1 big article a month. 6 hideouts with Printing Presses would mean 6 articles a month. That way, having multiple Printing Presses would actually be useful, and there'd still be a reasonable limit on how many major articles you can publish in a month (namely the number of Printing Presses you have).

Oh, and another thing. The newsworthy items you can publish are not stackable. They take up too much space in the inventory. (Often I have like 10 pages worth of newsworthy items in my inventory list!) I have been thinking about whether or not they should be stackable. Personally I would make ALL items stackable but that's just my personal preference, given my experience with ridiculously long inventory lists.

There is a bonus to flag burning if you do it when your hideout is being raided. So your strategy of burning a flag when you get raided is very good. As for what the bonus is, well, it has a positive effect on public opinion. Helps the Liberal cause. At least on the Flag Burning issue. Not sure if it makes the LCS better known or more popular though.

Anyway the real thing that's great to do during a raid is get a reporter to interview one of your LCS operatives, hopefully someone with lots of Intelligence, Charisma, Persuasion, that sort of thing. That gives you LOADS of benefits to public opinion. But it's random and rather unlikely. The best way to increase the odds of having a reporter show up for an interview is have a raid go on for a very long time, many days. This means having lots of days of food stored up ahead of time, of course. Err, I mean, your hideout is under siege, not a raid. Well, same thing, I guess.

Bug: I have snuck in unnoticed into the Oval Office and the message says that the President is in there, but there are only two Secret Service agents present, which, after being eliminated stealthily, still leave the President nowhere to be seen.

That's not a bug, what's actually going on is that the President IS there (like the message says) but he's even MORE stealthy than you are, and is hiding in the shadows, quietly observing the Liberal Crime Squad, which is why you can't find him anywhere. This is because the President has an incredibly high Stealth skill and has switched from wearing an Expensive Suit to running around in a Ninja Costume. :o

Just kidding. You found a bug. :P

'Tis best to kidnap the Police Officers at gunpoint once you are out on a date with them. If you manage to get them back to the safehouse without them arresting you or escaping, well then they aren't THAT tough to interrogate. Then you can just BEAT the Conservatism out of them, and then talk to them after their Wisdom is low enough for them to listen to Liberal Reason, and soon you'll have Police Officer Sleepers without running the risk of raising your Wisdom.

I basically just use Seduction to trick Conservatives into going out on dates so I can kidnap and interrogate them. I never actually do the whole dating thing. And to get Liberals to join, I always use Persuasion and talking about the issues. That's just my particular playing style. It's worked well over multiple different versions of the game, so it's a pretty good strategy, at least for me.

« on: September 30, 2013, 02:31:57 pm »
I think it's needless to say I don't play LCS for the realism.

I actually like the idea of silenced firearms and more options for sneak attacks. If it is balanced and adds to the overall gameplay experience, then I am on board. Realism be damned (The day I can't recruit dogs is the day I quit forever, or at least only play older versions)

I agree with this. LCS is not supposed to be realistic. It is a parody. Having unrealistic elements helps reinforce that it's a parody and not reality, that you shouldn't actually go out and do the things you do in this game, in real life. Which is emphasized, by the 2 main parties being the Liberal Party and Conservative Party, rather than the Democratic Party and Republican Party. If we were going for realism in this game, the main 2 parties would be the Democrats and Republicans.

On an unrelated note I've been looking at articles about 'best free PC games' and noticed a distinct lack of LCS. DF hits every list because...it's DF, if Toady spent time on the UI it'd be bigger then Minecraft, but I think everyone forgets that LCS is still an active game and 1000x deeper then when it first came out as a 'throwaway' curses game. I am not active enough on the internet anymore to try and pimp this game but to those of you who are, it'd be nice to get LCS mentioned again...

Yes, somebody should do this. I can't, because among other reasons, I am currently on vacation in Vienna and am not at my usual computer, but instead using a netbook, which I share with 2 other people who are on vacation with me, and most of the time none of us are on the computer and we are out doing other things.

Technically Glenn Beck is no longer on TV (lost his job at Fox News) but still has a big nationwide radio show with lots of listeners, so currently he'd be best classified as a Radio Personality. Yes, he does have his own TV network, but he copied that idea from Al Gore who did it before Glenn Beck did, and nobody watches Glenn Beck's TV network anyway. Al Gore ended up selling his TV network to the Qatar-government-owned satellite TV network Al Jazeera. Judging by that pattern, I would guess Glenn Beck will probably sell his TV network to the Russian-government-owned cable news network RT America. But only after Glenn Beck gets more cable companies to include his network in their packages, so that RT America views it as a worthwhile purchase. It is very hard for foreign-owned news networks to get included in cable packages, for some reason, so they have to buy struggling American-owned news networks like Al Gore's Current TV in order to actually get on television. And the Russians would probably give Glenn Beck a very generous offer to buy his TV network, and he seems like the type who'd do anything for money. Just like most politicians and pundits likewise seem like the type who'd do anything for money, with the sole exception of the President of Uruguay, José Mujica, who has absolutely no interest in money whatsoever. Good guy, that José Mujica fella. I'd vote for him... if I lived in Uruguay, that is.

Curses / Re: LCS crashes on elections
« on: September 30, 2013, 12:45:48 pm »
So I've just finished cleaning one of the CCS safehouses, I got the public to become liberal and just as election day dawned... The game crashed, I tried to restart it several times but it crashed on election day every time, any way to fix this?

Which version number of Liberal Crime Squad were you playing when this happened? It seems from what Insanity X said that this was a problem in older versions that got fixed in the newer betas. But I'd like it if you could confirm that this is the case, since I can't seem to find anything in the SVN logs to indicate that this specific bug was ever fixed.

So it would really be useful if you could say what version number of the game you were playing when this crash on election day happened. That way we can know whether or not this is a bug that is likely still present in the newest versions of the game, or whether it really did get fixed and it just never got mentioned in the SVN logs by whoever fixed it.

Good job, now see if you can beat the game in an earlier year than 2019. It's perfectly doable to beat the game in the in-game year of 2013 (after electing an Elite Liberal President in 2012). It's even possible to beat the game in 2012, but much harder. See if you can get a 2012 or 2013 win, beating the game in that short of a timespan is quite epic. If you can't do it that quickly, at least try and beat the game in 2016 or 2017. 2019 is kinda late.

Or do the opposite and drag out the game past the year 2100. Cool things happen if the game gets past the year 2100! All the weapons get new names, futuristic names. See how long you can drag out the game and still end up winning. You'll probably need to go through several leaders (which means juicing up a younger-aged person to be the successor to your founder, and it has to be someone you recruited through talking about the issues rather than someone you interrogated and brainwashed, and while someone you seduced MIGHT work, it's best not to risk it, better to stick with someone you recruited through talking about the issues to train to be your next leader once the original founder dies). If you want the game to last THAT long, you can't let the country get too Liberal OR too Conservative, but keep it in a somewhat moderate state for almost 100 years before you finally Liberalize it. That's a fun challenge to try out.
