Curses / Re: Some bugs
« on: September 14, 2013, 12:17:25 am »
I just got a new love slave and it gave the standard option of:

 - Come to the abandoned fertilizer plant as a regular member
 - Stay at University district as a sleeper agent

The thing is though I'm not at an abandoned fertilizer plant, I'm at "Ogden Manpower" (Business front)

Fixed this bug in revision 725. Now when you get the prompt on whether or not to make a new LCS operative a Sleeper, the names of your hideout and their work location are both correctly displayed in full, including business front names and what city it's in.

If Ogden Manpower used to be an abandoned fertilizer plant, sometimes the game doesn't use the Front name.  Happens with some raids & raid-warnings as well.

Haven't yet dealt with it for raids or raid-warnings though... still need to fix that.

I was fairly active and fixed lots of bugs in August but I've been doing other stuff and haven't checked these forums in 2 or 3 weeks, sorry about that. I also have a vacation to another country coming up later this month. But yes, the thread at http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=130777.0 where bugs are being listed is a good place to list all of them. Several weeks ago I would look at every post on these forums and fix as many bugs as I could find mentioned. But then for some reason I forgot about this game, then I just remembered it again maybe yesterday, and thought I should probably see what's going on on the forums. I'll see if I can fix the bugs in that thread. And there are other programmers too, I'm sure if I don't fix them, someone else will probably get around to it eventually. SourceForge actually has a bug-tracking system but I don't think this project actually uses it... you need a SourceForge account to access it, so anyone who wanted to post a bug report would need a SourceForge account. So yeah, posting bugs in that thread is probably the best idea, then somebody will probably fix them, maybe me, maybe somebody else.

My schedule's a bit busier this month than last month. I mean, I'm going to be visiting Vienna and Rome, over in Europe, and won't have access to my computer, for about a month, and that trip is coming up soon. To be honest, I was doing a whole lot of programming on this in August and spending a lot of time on it (I did a HUGE number of revisions, just look at the SVN log), and I kinda got bored after awhile, so I've just been taking a little break from it, and spending my spare time on other things instead (mostly watching TV shows I downloaded off BitTorrent, whoops I mean legally paid money to watch on Netflix). But since this project means so much to everyone here I'll see if I can find the time to fix the bugs you post in that thread.

I do the same thing as Elodie to level up Disguise, namely going around in one of the armors that has ZERO Stealth value. My personal favorites to use for this are the Donkey Suit and Elephant Suit. I show up wearing one of those at a site, steal just 1 item while nobody's looking, then walk back and forth on 2 tiles near the entrance until either my Disguise skill goes up or a Conservative cries out in alarm. Then I leave the site and come back the next day and do the same exact thing all over again. Within a few days, my Disguise skill is maxed out. And nobody knows who did any of this, since the Donkey Suit and Elephant Suit both cover the face. As far as any Conservative observers are concerned, this was all done by an actual donkey or elephant.

Well, that's a lot of bugs...

The second was that in the Elite Liberal amendment, there were three maines, two Iowas, and no North Carolinas.

This one's been fixed already in the SVN builds on SourceForge. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about any of the other bugs mentioned in this thread. Except the one about Ogden Manpower being an Abandoned Fertilizer Plant, that one isn't really a bug, it's that way on purpose, at least I think it is... not really sure. But I guess it could be considered a bug even if it WAS originally done that way on purpose, since it would probably be better and more consistent to go with the name of the business front, as long as a business front exists (business fronts DO get destroyed sometimes during sieges).

And as for that screenshot of the text display problem, yeah I've seen all sorts of similar text display problems in different parts of the game, usually because 2 different pieces of text are being printed in the same place on the screen and one of them partially overwrites the other. Very common issue. An easy solution would be more newlines, but there's only 25 rows on the screen, it's easy to run out of space. Especially on some other screens in the game that have similar issues with one bit of text overwriting another bit of text, where the entire screen is used up by various different text.

So yeah... a bunch of things to fix, eh... it's really too bad, it seems no matter how many bugs we fix, we keep finding more things that need to be fixed, it's like they're endless... but they CAN'T be endless, there's only a finite amount of source code. You can't have an infinite number of bugs in a finite amount of source code. At least I HOPE not.

If you keep getting game overs, a good way to avoid losing the game is to avoid taking any risky actions, such as violent activity or things that get you in trouble with the law. However, if you take a risk-averse strategy and try to play things safe, this makes it more difficult to win over public opinion and win the game.

Anyway my suggestion is to repeatedly have your founder go around picking locks but NOT going into the apartments, first at housing projects, then at university apartments, then at downtown apartments, as your Security skill goes up. Once you have high security skill, go into apartments and steal stuff, but only when nobody is looking. If Conservatives get alarmed, get out of there as quickly as possible. Also you will want an armor with good Stealth for this. Tailoring skill and making your own armor is a good way to get armor with Stealth. I would start out with a Trenchcoat, then move up to a Ninja Costume once there is enough Tailoring skill and money, then move up to SEAL Stealth Armor once there is enough Tailoring skill and money. With Stealth you'll be able to get away with doing illegal stuff when people aren't looking, and then they won't be as suspicious of you as they would be towards someone without Stealth. Also build up the Disguise skill too. Also talk to lots of people about issues, max out your Persuasion. And ask lots of people out on dates, max out your Seduction. Then get your Juice up to 200 (Urban Commando) by repeatedly stealing stuff and not getting caught. If you do things right, you won't be wanted by the police for anything at all, but you'll have high levels in several important skills.

After this, you'll want to get a car, which you can either steal or buy. You'll also want a weapon small enough to conceal but scary enough to intimidate. A Combat Knife is excellent for this. Now go to places, ask Conservatives out on dates (they'll probably say yes since your Seduction's maxed out at this point), and then on the date, kidnap them. Kidnapping should work, because you have a scary weapon, and because you have a car that you can drive back to your hideout in, with the kidnap victim trapped inside the car the whole way. Attempting a kidnapping without a scary weapon or without a car is a bad idea, you want those first before you start kidnapping. Then after you get the Conservatives kidnapped, interrogate them. You'll want to wear Bondage Gear for interrogation, it makes interrogation more effective. Your Psychology skill will go up the more you kidnap and brainwash people. If you brainwash them fast enough they'll never get reported missing, and you can turn them into Sleeper agents. Once you're really good at kidnapping and brainwashing you can get a lot of high-level Conservatives as Sleepers.

Once you have lots of high-level Conservatives as Sleepers, have them Laying Low until their infiltration is above 90% or until it is September or October. If their infiltration is above 90% or if the current month is September or October, you'll want them Promoting Liberalism. Having lots of Sleepers do this will be very effective at promoting the Liberal cause. But this does not directly impact public opinion, it impacts how much influence the Liberal Crime Squad HAS on public opinion. Now you'll want to recruit a liberal Programmer with high Computer skill and have them at a different site from your Founder, and have them do nothing but Hacking. This will have a huge impact on public opinion over time, enough to win the game if you never get caught. Having the hacker be at a hideout that has a business front and an American flag flying out front will give them enough cover to avoid being caught, especially if it's just 1 hacker. Also, you'll want a Printing Press set up at the same site that has the hacker and the business front. Then whenever they get documents, you can publish them in the Liberal Guardian newspaper. This is the part that really has a huge impact on public opinion, especially because of the activities of your Sleepers Promoting Liberalism. Then because of public opinion, Congress, the Supreme Court, and the President will all eventually become Elite Liberal, along with all of the laws. And if the Conservative Crime Squad starts doing stuff, don't worry, because of your Sleepers' actions along with the documents you regularly publish in the Liberal Guardian newspaper, public opinion will be very much against the Conservative Crime Squad, and everything they do will only alienate the public against the Conservative cause and make Liberalism even MORE popular. You can try destroying and eliminating the Conservative Crime Squad if you feel like it, but if you succeed at that, they will no longer be alienating the public on a regular basis, so public opinion won't move as fast in the Liberal direction afterwards, it will probably increase the number of years it takes to Liberalize the country.

Anyway that's how you can beat the game without too much risk. And try and keep your Founder out of trouble. If your Founder ever gets in trouble for kidnapping, a good way to make this go away is to send the person you kidnapped and got reported missing and didn't become a Sleeper on a suicide mission. Just send them out unarmed someplace and have them start fighting Conservatives, and soon they'll be dead, which is good, because if you didn't get rid of them the police would come after both your founder and the person who got kidnapped, and then the person who got kidnapped would rat out your Founder and testify against them in court. Not cool, better to kill them off before they can do that, and it's best to kill them off by sending them on suicide missions. You can also kill or set free a member of the LCS if they're at your base, but that's not good, since killing them makes you lose Heart, and if you set them free they'll go to the cops and rat you out. Suicide missions are the way to go for getting rid of people in this game. The LCS is a terrorist organization, after all.

Curses / Re: So many suggestions lately
« on: September 13, 2013, 04:34:21 pm »
I really like your suggestions Shibby, since the actual issue that I originally wanted to solve was how difficult it is to train your Sleeper Lawyer's Law skill.

Every time a Sleeper Lawyer defends anyone in court, it trains both their Law and Persuasion skills:

From justice.cpp in the monthly directory:
Code: [Select]
            {
               // Sleeper attorney
               defensepower=LCSrandom(71)+sleeperlawyer->get_skill(SKILL_LAW)*2
                                         +sleeperlawyer->get_skill(SKILL_PERSUASION)*2;
               sleeperlawyer->train(SKILL_LAW,prosecution/4);
               sleeperlawyer->train(SKILL_PERSUASION,prosecution/4);
            }

As you see from the above code, the amount by which a Sleeper Lawyer gets trained is based on the prosecution power, NOT the defense power. And the prosecution power is based on how many crimes you committed, whether anyone is testifying against you, how severe the crimes are that you committed, whether or not there's a sleeper judge, and whether or not you paid $5,000 for an ace Liberal attorney (90% chance of weakening prosecution, 10% chance of strengthening it by having CONSERVATIVE ARCH-NEMESIS show up as prosecutor).

So to train your Sleeper Lawyer fastest, you need a strong prosecution, and need to do lots of cases, so this is best done by recruiting a whole bunch of lowlifes, having them all commit heinous crimes, and all get arrested.

But to get your Sleeper Lawyer to gain lots of juice (up to 500), you need a WEAK prosecution (under 100) and a very strong defense (over 145):
Code: [Select]
               if(prosecution<100)
               {
                  addstr(attorneyname, gamelog);
                  addstr("'s arguments made several of the jurors stand up ", gamelog);
                  move(10,1);
                  addstr("and shout \"NOT GUILTY!\" before deliberations even began.", gamelog);
                  if(defense==4)addjuice(*sleeperlawyer,10,500); // Bow please
               }

Plus every time a Sleeper Lawyer wins a case they get juice, up to 100:
Code: [Select]
         if(defense==4)
         {
            // Juice sleeper
            addjuice(*sleeperlawyer,10,100);
         }

So ya, to train a Sleeper Lawyer's skills you want them up against a strong prosecution, and then to juice them up you want them up against a weak prosecution. Their skills still go up a little bit if they're against a weak prosecution, just not as much as against a strong prosecution. The main thing in training a Sleeper Lawyer is to use them again and again and again and have them defend in lots and lots of cases. The more experience they get in court the better they'll get as lawyers (in both their skills and their juice, and you can theoretically get their juice up to 500 which will give them very high attributes and very high skill caps for Law and Persuasion). It's not THAT hard to train a Sleeper Lawyer, you just gotta use them in court a whole bunch of times. This is really not that hard. If you get 6 people arrested at a site action, all 6 of them will go on trial on the same date. Get another 6 arrested the same month, and you can have 12 trials on that date. Have the same Sleeper Lawyer handle all the cases, and he or she or xe will level up really fast. Well maybe not THAT fast, because there's a maximum to how much someone's skills can go up in one day, the limit is the next level plus 0.50. So each month you can raise a Sleeper Lawyer's Persuasion and Law by 1 each, and as for juice, you can easily get to 100 juice, but getting to 500 juice requires much more skill. And to get a weak prosecution so you can juice up to 500, you'll want a Sleeper Judge, that cuts prosecution power in half, and the other way you cut prosecution power is by having people who didn't commit any major crimes be the defendants. Getting juice for a Sleeper Lawyer up to 500 requires you to have 10 victories and then 40 EPIC victories in court. So that is a LOT of trials...

I can see why you might be frustrated. Then again, most skills in this game require lots of continued effort to train to a high level. And a maxed-out Sleeper Lawyer is virtually invincible. So it shouldn't be too easy to get one. But maybe it would make sense for you to have more than 1 way for a Sleeper Lawyer to train their skills, and not always have to do it in a trial.

I think more sleeper actions, especially university classes, could be a super useful addition. (Could make the public policy class actually useful, too. For increasing Sleeper advocacy effectiveness)

Yes, letting sleepers take university classes would be the best solution to this little problem. It wouldn't make training a Sleeper Lawyer THAT easy... it would require plenty of time and money to do the university classes, and not be as fast as learning by being a defense lawyer at trials. But it would be totally risk-free, and wouldn't risk your sleepers getting outed, because taking university classes is a legitimate legal activity, unlike stealing things or uncovering secrets or embezzling money. But even though it would be risk-free and not risk being outed as an LCS operative, it WOULD have a very small penalty to the infiltration percentage. Because how can someone be increasing their infiltration level at their job, if they are off taking classes all the time? It would make their infiltration level go down. But very slowly, because university classes require lots of time and money, so having a really big infiltration penalty wouldn't make them a very desirable option for players, the infiltration penalty has to be small enough so that taking university classes is worth it.

So yes, I think that is what we should do, follow your suggestion about letting Sleepers take university classes, then people who don't want to go through a huge amount of trials will be able to train their lawyers, and other sorts of Sleepers will also be trainable. And if you train them at the skills they use when Advocating Liberalism (which are different depending on the Sleeper's occupation), and then have them Laying Low long enough to get their infiltration level high, this will allow skilled players to train their Sleepers to be REALLY good advocates of Liberalism.

But what about the juice cap for Sleepers? Sleeper actions such as embezzling, stealing, or uncovering secrets have a juice cap of 100, while a Sleeper Lawyer can potentially get their juice up to 500 by winning lots of trials. There ought to be ways that non-Lawyer Sleepers should also be able to get their juice level higher than 100. Something dangerous. More dangerous than embezzling money, stealing equipment, or uncovering secrets. And illegal too. But if a Sleeper is wanted for a crime, they couldn't continue being a Sleeper anymore, since it would expose them as an LCS operative. Unless they do illegal stuff when they AREN'T at work, and their co-workers don't find out about it. Eh, this is too complicated, I don't really know what to do with regard to giving non-lawyer Sleepers a way to get juice higher than 100. The option of letting them participate in site actions would be really complicated and hard to implement, for instance.

Curses / Re: The impossible liberal gang squad.
« on: September 13, 2013, 03:27:11 pm »
Speaking of gang members, how do you use a recruited gang member to buy weapons from the black market? I swear that was an option, or am I just misunderstanding how it works? I know you can talk to gang members while wandering around to buy guns but I thought you could buy directly from your own members if you had them.

You can buy weapons from Gang Members or Elite Security, at some locations but not others. The locations that currently work are Housing Projects, Crackhouses, and any of the 3 current/former CCS Hideouts. Also, you can't be wearing a police uniform or police body armor, or else they'll think your a cop. And it won't work if you're naked, since then they'll be all like "Jesus..." And it won't work if people at the site are alarmed.

And no, you can't buy anything from a Gang Member or Elite Security who's already been recruited and is part of the LCS already. I don't think that was ever an option.

Curses / Re: LCS - Now available on Android?
« on: September 13, 2013, 02:36:50 pm »
There's a version 9 of this now. I haven't played much but it seems functional.

Trying to get DosBox Turbo and HX Dos Extender with the latest LCS has not worked. I'm probably doing it wrong.

edit: Stars! works under Win3.1 using the Android instructions here: http://wiki.starsautohost.org/wiki/Stars_vs_OS  but not even the original LCS 3.09 will run with appropriate tweaks. Do I have to get the dll recognized or something? The warning message in windows is "cannot find file: c:\lcs\crimesquad.exe". Warning: I haven't touched even win95 in over a decade.
edit2: Okay, so LCS is now a win2k/nt ish era thing? Good to know.

Yes, LCS is a win2k/nt is era thing. Probably. MIGHT also work on Windows 95/98/ME. Not really sure. The thing is, the Windows API for NT series versions of Windows (including Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, and future versions) is different from the Windows API for Windows 9x (Windows 95, 98, and ME). Liberal Crime Squad, the Windows version, is a Win32 Console Application. Thus incompatible with 16-bit OSes. Except of course, there is Win32S for Windows 3.1x, 32-bit extensions for Windows 3.1x that come with the demonstration program FreeCell. But Win32S is the worst version of the Win32 API, vastly inferior to the NT series or to Windows 9x, and Liberal Crime Squad, like the vast majority of 32-bit Windows programs, probably makes API calls that aren't supported by Win32s, so running it on Windows 3.1x is highly unlikely to work (BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE)!

However, HX Dos Extender is there for the rescue! It allows you to run Win32 Console Applications from DOS or a DOS emulator, and HX DOS Extender is compatible with much of the Windows API from NT series operating systems. So running it in DOSBox with HX Dos Extender SHOULD work. If HX Dos Extender ever has problems usually this is because of missing .dll files, and you can simply copy whichever .dll files it demands from a copy of Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7/8. HX Dos Extender is basically a bootstrapping layer that allows you to run a modified version of the Win32 kernel from DOS, and then you can run Win32 .exe files if you have the proper .dlls. And because HX Dos Extender runs on DOS, it can allow you to run Windows programs on anything that can run a DOS emulator. The only major problem is, it doesn't really support graphics, just console applications. But since Liberal Crime Squad IS a console application, that's not a problem! So by running HX Dos Extender with a DOS emulator you can run Liberal Crime Squad on any operating system or console that is capable of running a DOS emulator. I think there are even versions of DOSBox for game consoles. For instance, there is a version of DOSBox made for the Sony PlayStation 3, and one for the XBox, among numerous ports which exist. So you can actually play Liberal Crime Squad on those consoles, although I am quite curious as to how the keyboard interface of DOS is emulated on those consoles (whose game controllers have FAR less buttons than the number of keys on a computer keyboard). Plus with HX Dos Extender you can run Liberal Crime Squad inside a DOS box from ANY version of Windows, even Windows 1.0, the first version Microsoft ever made! Probably. Haven't tested it myself. But it SHOULD be possible, theoretically. And of course there are versions of DOSBox for various tablets like Android and the BlackBerry Playbook, which combined with HX Dos Extender allow you to run Liberal Crime Squad on those.

Of course you can also compile and build Liberal Crime Squad on any POSIX-compliant operating system such as Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, or the other UNIXes, without having to rely on emulation. However this doesn't guarantee it will be able to compile and build on ALL UNIX-like operating systems. For instance, Android is based on Linux, but I don't think it has a console interface or implements all of the POSIX APIs used by the UNIX version of Liberal Crime Squad. But luckily there is a separate project to make an Android version of Liberal Crime Squad. PLUS you can use the DOSBox+HX Dos Extender combo to run it on Android too, most likely.

So basically, Liberal Crime Squad ought to be able to run on almost any operating system, almost any computer, almost any modern game console, almost any tablet, because the DOSBox+HX Dos Extender combo allows you to emulate Win32 Console Applications such as the Win32 version of Liberal Crime Squad from almost any platform. And if you have a 64-bit edition of Windows, 64-bit Windows can run 32-bit Windows programs natively, just not 16-bit Windows or DOS programs. 32-bit Windows, on the other hand, can run 16-bit Windows or DOS programs through its built in 16-bit emulation layer called NTVDM, NT Virtual Device Manager. In fact, you can run the DOSBox+HX Dos Extender combo inside Windows. And since HX Dos Extender can run inside DOSBox and DOSBox can run inside HX Dos Extender, you can actually have MULTIPLE emulation layers... you can run Liberal Crime Squad inside HX Dos Extender inside DOSBox inside HX Dos Extender inside DOSBox on any platform that supports DOSBox, including Windows. Which is utterly pointless, because you can natively run Liberal Crime Squad on Windows, and it runs much faster. But if you like to play around with this kind of stuff... well then go right ahead. Do be warned, though, that in order to emulate a 32-bit Windows environment, the DOS environment you emulate will need to be emulating a 386 or later processor. If you emulate a 286 or earlier, those processors are 16-bit or 8-bit. So 32-bit programs won't work in that environment. This also means that old 8-bit and 16-bit game consoles, like a Nintendo Entertainment System or an Atari 2600 or a Sega Genesis, can't emulate Liberal Crime Squad. Sorry. However, it MIGHT be possible to emulate it on a SUPER Nintendo Entertainment System, because the SNES allowed for custom addon chips. So theoretically if an SNES cartridge included an Intel Pentium CPU on it, it would be able to run 32-bit x86 programs on an SNES. But nobody ever physically made such an addon chip. However, emulating such an addon chip, even though it is a fictional addon chip that was never made, is entirely possible. And then any SNES emulator that supported such an addon chip would be able to emulate DOS and Windows programs, including Liberal Crime Squad.

That is true. We should make having saved games be in XML be on the TODO list. If there even is an official TODO list. I'm not sure if there is one anymore, there's a file in the source code with a TODO list but it's very out of date (one of the things on the TODO list is adding Desert Eagles to the game, and they've been part of the game for quite some time).

I have added your build notes to the main build notes file, LINUX_README.txt, as of revision 724, and credited you for writing those excellent build notes in the file. Now anyone who downloads the source code will have your build notes right there in that readme file in case they want to compile on Mac OS X. Unfortunately, from what I've read on the Wikipedia article about XCode, downloading it from the App Store only works on Mac OS X 10.7 and later, and not on earlier versions. 10.3 thru 10.6 all support XCode but not the latest versions, on those you have to download XCode from Apple's website instead of from the App Store, and they may need a developer account at Apple's website to download those older versions. But I am guessing if someone is able to get ahold of XCode on those older versions of Mac OS X, your instructions would probably work just fine. Anyway, thanks for your contributions! ;)

There is stuff about this in the code already, mostly commented out, about a "squad stance". Either covert, normal, or battle colors. Covert would be, you try to avoid detection as much as possible, and are likely to get away with crimes, and have little to no heat or impact on public opinion. Normal would be the current system. Battle colors would be, you openly take credit for every crime you commit, and Conservatives are likely to be alarmed from the moment you step foot in the door of a site, you wouldn't have any disguise or stealth at all, and you'd get huge amounts of both heat and impact on public opinion. It isn't fully implemented yet though. Well I guess it's obvious it isn't fully implemented yet since if it were fully implemented, it would be an enabled feature that's part of the game and everyone who plays the game would know about it by seeing it in the user interface.

Another suggestion... how about being able to demand the release of imprisoned Liberals as well?

Ah yes, a prisoner exchange, that's a good idea too. Lots of times you see a prisoner exchange between Israelis and Palestinians, for instance. Typically hundreds of Palestinian prisoners are set free by Israelis and returned to Palestine, in exchange for just one Israeli prisoner set free by the Palestinians and returned to Israel. Because, asymmetrical warfare. Or something. Then again, the U.S. government DOES NOT NEGOTIATE WITH TERRORISTS, at least officially. Although that's not actually true in practice (the U.S. government actually has negotiations with the Taliban on a regular basis, for instance).

Also, sometimes Hicks, Rubes, and Mercenaries will tell the location of CCS safehouse, if present.

(As a note, I think mercenaries should be renamed, since the guards of the CEO House have been renamed "Elite Security, so whenever you find one you know they work with the CCS)

Elite Security (formerly known as Mercenaries) don't all work for the CCS. Some of them actually ARE security, guarding places like the CEO House and Corporate Headquarters. Hicks / Rubes / Country Boys / Rednecks / Yokels are sometimes just know-nothing rednecks (likely the case if you encounter them at an AM Radio Station or Cable News Station, for instance) and sometimes turn out to be CCS members in disguise (likely the case if you encounter them at a Gentlemen's Club, for instance). There are also several other occupations CCS members can disguise themselves as, too. The easiest way to find out which occupations is once you get the 1st CCS safehouse un-hidden and can visit it, check out what occupations of people you run across there. Most of them (but not all) are CCS members in disguise. It is somewhat similar to how a Professional Thief is always disguised as someone of another occupation when you encounter one in site mode.

I had not really considered this. During my own gameplay, I try to avoid having anyone find out about any kidnappings I have done and try to avoid any sieges. I THINK the game already allows you to threaten hostages if you are in site mode and kidnap someone there. For an example of this try going to a bank and kidnapping a Bank Manager and then seeing what options you have.

Anyway this is a good idea. One of lots of good ideas we've had recently. Not just recently, I'm sure a lot of people had good ideas before recently, but I've only been really active enough on this forum to be noticing the good ideas recently though.

I have recently done a bunch of coding on the game. Mostly fixing bugs. Not so much adding new features. That is a bit harder for me. I have added a few features but only minor stuff. This is definitely a good idea, not sure if I'd be the best one to implement it though. It would be helpful, though, if you went into more detail about how you would like this feature to work. Like, would you be walking around a site and one of your people holding the hostage, during the Engage/Escape part of a siege, or if you kidnap someone in site mode when you go to a site and are carrying them around as a hostage? Would this be something you could do if you were under siege and you hadn't gotten to the Escape/Engage part yet? Would this be something you could do if you had a hostage you were interrogating and decided you wanted to announce to the world you have them and demand a ransom? I mean, what parts of the game do you imagine having this being added as an option to?

I think the best place to add it would be interrogation, since taking someone hostage and demanding a ransom is often done when people don't know who the kidnappers are and want to know the hostage is safe. Demanding a ransom during a siege is a bit more iffy. Usually the main thing people who are under siege want is for the siege to end rather than being gunned down, and authorities would be reluctant to give money to someone they have under siege instead of sending in a SWAT team to gun them down.

Anyway, implementing this would require making more newspaper articles for this sort of thing. And I don't really know quite well how the newspaper thing works yet, even though I'm working on code for some other parts of the game.

And how would the Liberal Guardian newspaper report on the LCS holding someone for ransom? Currently the Liberal Guardian runs stories like "LCS Denies Kidnapping" and tries to portray the LCS positively all the time. How do you spin holding someone you kidnapped hostage for ransom in a positive way in a newspaper article?

So, nice feature idea, I don't think I'd be the best developer to implement it though, but I'm still interested in hearing more about the idea.

Yes, I knew that French only had the 2 genders and that every noun is either masculine or feminine, and adjectives and articles modifying a noun must match it in gender. The same thing is true in Spanish, which I have studied. I have also studied Latin, which has 3 genders, as well as a bit of German and Hungarian, neither of which I understand the grammar of very well. I THINK German has 3 genders commonly used for nouns, just like Latin, but I'm not entirely sure. If I recall correctly, the German articles "Das", "Die", and "Der" are for 3 different genders, but I don't remember which is which. But as a native English speaker, foreign languages all confuse me, even the ones I've studied or know a bit of, since I'm just not that good at any of them. I think I've actually even started to pick up on a little Japanese because of watching lots of anime cartoons, although only a VERY small amount, less than 10 words, even smaller than my Hungarian vocabulary of around 20 words. That's why I stick to English, it's the only language I'm any good at. But since my sister lives in Vienna, Austria, I have to know some German for whenever I visit Austria, just to get around. I know a little bit of Hungarian just because I'm half-Hungarian myself and my mom and her family immigrated from Hungary, and whenever my mom got together with my uncles and my grandparents back when I was a kid, they'd all talk Hungarian. As for Latin, I studied it way back in high school, and although I was pretty good at it and knew it pretty well at the time, I've forgotten it almost completely. As for Spanish, I studied it in college, I went overseas to Mexico for a month for language immersion study in Spanish, and for a short time I was actually close to fluent in Spanish, but my skills in Spanish have declined since then and are now back to a low-intermediate level, about the same as my German is currently. My Latin and Hungarian are both VERY low currently, almost nothing now, almost as low as the tiny, minute small amount of Japanese that I know from watching anime. I've never studied or used French, but like most Romance languages, it makes a certain amount of sense to me and I can guess at the meanings of about half the words if I see them written down, just like with Italian.
