Dwarves are too cool for your human alloy colors.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The most epic battle ever witnessed...

I'm not a fan of the tileset either, but i love the way the fortress design works with the carnage. Has a proper epic feel to it. I think it's because the areas are discrete and widely seperated. So when you say "And over here is where the nobles died cowering behind their masterpiece furniture" it actually feels like a seperate area of the fortress that was overrun.

It's too bad you can't heap all the dead in a pile and burn them, would live up to your fortress name. :)

Edit - Is it just me or is there a security hole? It looks like you can get into the courtyard from the east hill.  I assume this is a labor-saving measure done post-siege...?

DF Suggestions / Re: Realistic Mining Suggestion
« on: September 16, 2008, 05:07:39 am »
Leftover stone is already a big enough PITA that people exploit so they can stack it all in one square... is this really not enough?

Mining might be too fast but that's something you don't need to add game mechanics to fiddle with.

I'm curious, how long does the color take you VS.  the sketching inking and so on.

DF is no match for X-Com.  Period.  Don't get me wrong, DF is a great game, but X-Com is one of the best ever.  It's easily a match for all-time greats like StarCraft, System Shock, and Star Control 2, and not much from any genre can compete with the likes of those.
x-com is nice and all, but there's a reason there's so many remakes rather than people just playing the original...having to redo inventory every mission is (by itself) a game-killing issue by modern standards.  that was about par for course back in the day but it's caused X-com to age very badly.

even Dwarf Fortress has a higher useability standard than that, arcane keyboard interface or not.

One of my squads was named Nòmmonom, "The Godly Papers". I'm using the name for some Spore stuff. ;)

DF General Discussion / Re: DF finds it's way into Microsoft offices.

Microsoft has a pretty good record on games... Outwars, Close Combat, Age of Empires... no need to get all hot and bothered.

I love the way the world map works as a background in the pic though.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Name That Currency!

I love the idea that the base unit of Dwarven currency is a beer-unit. Heh.  Beers are worth too much though. We can't use fractions unfortunately. I just think Value myself.  I suppose coppers makes the most sense in terms of the Dwarven Economy...

In hindsight, taunting people to just try and burn down your building isn't a great idea.

DF General Discussion / Re: So who is going to PAX?
« on: August 30, 2008, 06:01:12 pm »
X-play made a list of the 'top ten indie games at pax'. They were some of the most unoriginal crap out there, excluding the Sushi bar one, and even that is not a great game. No mention of Cortex Command or anything.
I'll take your word for it, but I am thinking it's more like indie developers have a lot more trouble attending conventions than that they were barred from entry.

I mean I own Cortex Command... 8)

It's a convention for popular, big-budget games. Not ACII-graphics PC games made by a two-man supergroup.
Says who? It's organized by Penny Arcade, I.E. Gamers. Not the industry.
