So far the construction of by above ground fort has been going good but I'm starting to find myself running out of ideas of what type of building to build next.

I currently have a total of 7 buildings.
Meeting hall
Granary
Gatehouse
Lumbermill
Dinner with an underground brewery
Fishery
Apartament

One of the buildings that I realy want to build is a church with an underground crypt but I am also looking for designs for a blacksmith or anything else someone has an idea for.

Ok, did some testing around with it and it turns out that dwarves have trouble shooting carp due to river being one Z below thus blocking line of sight unless a dwarf gets dangerously close to a river.  So I did some messing around and found the best solution.  Making a patrol point all the way around the river will result in the dwavres shooting the carp before they reach possible melee range with the carp and in addition to being a safe training for marksdwarves also racks up kills for them, it gives your dwarves the "Took joy in a slaughter" thought and paints the river red with the blood of carp.  One dwarf was lost in the testing of this becuase he wandered into a one tile walkway with a river on one side and a pond on the other and fell into the pond while trying to dodge a carp bite.

I wonder, will a marksdwarf try to chase after a carp that is in the middle of the river, becuase if so my plan to train up my marksdwarves and remove my carp problem at the same time is doomed.

Above ground building is very difficult, especially if use wood to make the buildings.  In my current fortress I am making, I only have established about 4 buildings (Meeting hall, Ganary, Dinning Hall/Underground still, Fishery docks) but am using around 1000 lumber for them.  Also with most of my dwarves working on building buildings I have no one on crafts duty so I get very low amount of immigrants (2-3 per season with no immigrants for the frist two years.)

Maybe the dwavren homes were all destroyed or tooken over but they had atleast conquered one dark fortress/city/elven retreat to allow them to survive and be picked for as a home civ.

I had one fort near a chasm that was filled with engravens of what I beileved happened to be a massive war between the goblins and and the gaint cave swallows, it could be dued to the fact that I have about 5 named gaint cave swallows on the map.
