DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Megaprojects

Hmm in the face of my first siege ever (especally considering I've been playing for a few months) I'm going to start building an area where when the goblin siege comes in I can close it behind them... built out of steel of course.

11th Moonstone
While over seeing the pitting of goblin prisoners the squad stationed in the pit room saw a large force of goblins appear to the north of us, we are besieged! Unfortunately I don’t believe the bridge at the tower is hooked up yet but the siege doesn’t look so big. I guess now we know why there hasn’t been much goblin activity lately.

12th Moonstone
The head count of the siege force has been completed.
16 Goblins total
11 Goblin wrestlers, one on a bleak dog
5 Goblin swordsmen

16th Moonstone
I walked up the stairs to the partially built tower where Catten’s squad, The Murky Busts, was waiting to rain death upon the goblin force.
“Do you think we’ll hold?” I asked bluntly.
“Aye. They don’t have any archers so between our shooting and the traps we shouldn’t have to big of a problem as long as no one goes charging them unless they’re in the base.” He clapped a hand on my shoulder. “Just think of it as one of those times when we had the series of ambushes.” I nodded stone-faced, knowing this trail could possibly be the most important battle for the fort.

18th Moostone
“Open fire!” Catten commanded and four crossbows fired with deadly precision at the invading forces. I watched, horrifyingly fascinated, as goblins began sprouting bolts from arms and shoulders, one taking a two bolts to the chest. Soon five goblins lay dead on the field and the rest were in retreat. Only a few of the fleeing goblins had wounds, mostly arm or hand wounds where bolts had hit, but one lagged behind with a bolt in its leg.
“Get the Violet Smiths out there.” I shouted, the other marksdwarf squad headed by Iden. I watched as the Smiths closed in on that last goblin and saw Olin fire two bolts finishing off the straggler. The fort shook with the cheers of the dwarves, they had survived, and without any injuries! “All forward!” I shouted and most of the fort poured out to congratulate the military and clean up the siege. Out of 16 goblins ten got away but considering how well we handled it we were ecstatic.

3rd Opal
The clean up is done and we have partied well into the night and through most of the next day celebrating our victory. Soon we’ll have more bone bolts to train Iden’s squad and we’ll begin training the melee squads soon as well.

Well I assume that the military structure is going to get upgraded with the next release and I hope that the whole squad follows leader for frivilous tasks gets dealt with. Whether or not its by straight up keeping them there as their leader runs away (can't take action till leader gets back), or the whole squad does the same thing (ie one guy goes to sleep the whole group goes to sleep).

Halfway through 4th year, accepting immigrants again and I just got a immigrant wave so we'll see how that works out. I'm also digging a pitting shaft since I've never done any pitting stuff yet, should be fun.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Using your adventurer to help your fortress

I don't know if that would work but I would presume that if you made a fort abandoned it and went around in adventure mode and gathered things if you put those things in the fort I would think that yu could use them when you reclaim.

Not sure that this really counts as a megaproject but I'm building a tower out of steel (not sure how high its going to go) and I'm slowly going to be pushing out steel furneture, floors and walls (unless its in a metal or gem spot), ect. Basiclly a fortress of steel  ;D

That is going to be a serious pain... Good idea.

You do have your army decked out in steel, right? I mean, no sense in having a fortress made of steel while your soldiers do battle with shell armor and stone weapons. Unless the goblins got genocided in world gen. If so, by all means steel fortress ftw.
My main 16 dwarf army has steel stuff, though I haven't accually equiped them yet, and got ten extra dwarves that I'm gonna wait till next immigrant wave to do anything yet (like I've got no fort guard yet, and what makes a good captian and should I try to make him a soldier first then give him position?). At any rate I've had a fare amount of coal and lignite veins, still have about 30 coal and 150 lignite to process, and I've got magnitite clusters so I have shitloads of iron.

edit: oh forgot to mention, I've also am making jaguar leather armor to go underneth the steel  ;D

DF Gameplay Questions / suggestions for military happyness needed
« on: September 09, 2008, 07:49:05 pm »
I'm curious about how to keep the military dwarves in a fort happy. I just knowticed that one of mine is unhappy and I'm worried about when a few die about the whole tantrume spiral (never had before anyway). I a previous fort I put statues in their bed assignment spaces (I'm considering giving them enough room to allow for normal room stuff) which I think helped but it would help more if more experienced players than I put in their suggestions.

Hmm for some reason the wiki doesn't like just hitting enter to move things to a new line.  Apparently it either needs you to hit enter twice (which gives a little space between the lines, like your season headings) or it wants a line break tag (I used the
html tag)  I only did the first year because I'm really tired and need to go to bed, but just stick it after your dates and it should work fine.  I feel like that's the least elegant way to do it, but... meh.
Ok thanks I'll do the editting later and add pictures at the same time.

Gah I hate how crafts are the number one type of articfacts that are produced. If it happens on an untrained dwarf it should do a random selection of skills, not just go to the craftshop.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: military going outside on off time.
« on: September 09, 2008, 08:21:37 am »
I've noticed, sometimes, military dwarves will revist the last site at which they were stationed, even when they are off duty.  Do you think that might be it?  They eventually get it out if their system and go back to doing whatever.
Hmm I don't think thats it but I had to put them back on duty due to ambushes, I'll have to try and test that later.
Anyway whats really annoying is the children that follow their parents(military) and don't respect the only soldier go outside order.

Well do you have adequate bolts? They will only use bone and wood bolts to practice. Not metal bolts.
Oooo yes I do, based on the stocks screen I've got at least 2000 bolts(might be counting some arrows from elves), 210 metal bolts, and out of the bone bolts 1400 are goblin  ;D
