java is limited to 68 megabytes of memory.
:o Are you sure? I've never heard that.

Also: @PTTG:  ::) ::) I've been known to do that, java doesn't like it either. I doesn't like "Public static void main(String[] arg)" either.

Buy as many ram & memory sticks as possible, so you can play DF quicker.

:D Unfortunately, that probably won't help DF much. I'd need a CPU upgrade.

Sorta off-topic, but:

The other day, I watched an interesting movie, The Man From Earth. Long story short, a modern college professor is moving away, and at the going away party he tells his co-workers that he is a milenias-old caveman.
An intriuging idea, no? It gets better: He had alreayd stated that he'd studied with Buddah. When asked if he knew anyone "from religious history", he eventually anmitted that he was Jesus. Of course, he was almost nothing like the Jesus of Biblical myth. He was trying to spread Buddah's teachings, and the "3 days later he rose" thing was because he'd learned to shut his body down almost completely, and some of his followers where there when he woke back up.

Back to what I, at least, would rather discuss/read: FTL travel.

I've heard about that "compress space-time in front/expand in in back" idea, but i have to wonder (perhaps i'm taking the rubber-sheet analogy too far): won't it snap back eventually? and just how do you get out of your bubble? there's some severely distorted spacetime surrounding you, is here not?

To be honest, a large portion of my "knowledge" on this subject comes from watching way too much Star Trek. But, no, I do not speak Klingon, nor do i dress up as one (or any other alien)

I doubt there's a "number of rocks" variable that has a direct influence on much of anything. Rocks aren't just a number, they have all kinds of properties - location, material, forbidden, hidden, marked for dumping, hauled by someone, melting point, weight, etc etc etc. Those properties have to be stored in some kind of structure, so rocks can't just be stored in an integer. Probably the only thing you'd screw up is the UI trying to display the number of rocks.
Like an array? whose max size (AFAIK) is an integer?
But then there is this:
It could use a linked list, or a doubly linked list, or some variant, as that would allow unlimited objects and easy removal and addition of them, although searching might be a bit slow, so it probably has some sorting mechanism...
I hadn't thought about that myself. I'd say it's safe to assume there's a sorting algorhythm(sp), but i'd guess it only runs when you happen accross the stone menu.

Sounds simmilar to how i started.... 'cept i found out about it from GameInformer's "Mod World" section.

Downloaded, managed to embark, fiddled with it, didn't manage to dig. So i said "Screw it, I'll tinker with something else and look it op online later. Spent a whole day reading the wiki. ;D

Seek and Destroy
??? The name sounds vaguely familiar, but what kind of game is it?

On the topic of games, what I'd love to find is something simmilar to Metroid Prime for the PC. I've been thinging about digging it out for a while, but I'm too lazy.

What is it?

I got it (a gift card) as a gift from a dear friend, so I feel obligated to spend it on me, so don't bother suggesting that I donate it to Toady. I did consider that, but like I said, I feel obligated to spend it on myself.

I'm completely new to online shopping. Where would be the best place to find stuff?

So... Ideas? Where to buy music? A cool game for >$25?

This looks cool. Is every weekend regular enough? If so add me to the list! If not, I'll still read and possibly comment now and then.

Also, how do you make bread? That might be something I add in.
I'm no baker, but AFAIK bread is flour (milled wheat) + water (or eggs? i don't think so, but i'm not sure) + a little yeast + baking soda? +salt? ... i think i'm leaving something important out, but i'm not sure what...

How about just using blender and the GIMP?

Here's how i do it: After blender's written out all the frames, open gimp, hit File->Open Layers and open them all, make sure the layers're in the right order(!), optionally optimize(in Filters->Animation), make sure it's in "indexed" mode(Image->Mode->Indexed...), then save as gif. It'll ask about flattening or making an animation.

Sorry if I sound uppity, but most of the people I know IRL would have to be told in greater detail than that...

BTW, I always have blender output PNG. Odds are you'll lose quality when you convert to gif... you can look at the campfire i posted a page or 2 ago, as an example.

Mostly unrelated, but a friend would like to have a nice-looking feather to use for a logo for this site (apparently, they're discussing the idea here), anyone have one/interested in making one? I'd give it a shot, but i wouldn't know where to begin...

I'll toss another recomendation point at DoomRL. I play it more than DF's Adv. mode.

I tried NetHack... couldn't get into it.

Those are the only rogulikes i've tried. I have played Spelunky, I suck at it. I think i made it the level 5 once... But it's fun. Not sure if it'd work on your old PC tho.

Wow... cool/evil...
I can't quite tell, is the head facing the camera too?
And how'd you get that glowing effect on the bottom orb? Looks cool.

@Derakon: 0_o Interesting... I like. Never tinkered with shadeless mats. before. Might have to try now!

I'm gonna hafta get back into Blender (:) short attention span, i guess) and add something more of my own.

But one must remember. 100 trained soldiers > 1000 peasants.

Too many possible variables for this to be true every time. That's 10:1.

And i'd say that a couple of those peasants are actually ninjas in disguise ;D
