Actually, i believe if you attempt to designate a drinking area, you can find out if the water is drinkable.

I seem to recall seing that someone was doing this, it makes sense that it would.

I always use windmills myself.

not sure about the aquifer bit, but i believe pumps will desalinate water, but you can't let that water mix with salt water, for obvious reasons

It wouldn't be completely redundant, like the OP said, you could use it to control where your trees grow. you could harvest the wood without killing the tree, so with time and carefull management you could have a bunch of trees in a small area.

nope. if you make a ramp, it removes the floor above, so there's nothing for a ramp to sit on above.
