DF Suggestions / Re: Job suspension, deconstruction status, and SOS alerts
« on: November 08, 2008, 06:30:33 pm »
Constructions don't keep track of deconstruction status? good to know.

I agree that the cancel/suspend bit needs work. What causes a suspention? I haven't managed to figure it out. (Ever pierced an aquifer?) The "finish at all costs" has been a point of heated debate, but your example, i believe, invalidates the arguments i've seen against "do-it-NOW" commands.

As for "Urist is dieing" messages, I agree completely. I have yet to lose a dwarf due to this, but as it is a known issue, I keep a close eye on them.

DF Suggestions / Re: ToadyOne, The Bare Minimum
« on: November 08, 2008, 05:57:28 pm »
I just wanted ot contribute my thoughts without starting/joining a flamewar.

I agree that both sides have made perfectly valid points. I tend to agree that Toady should spend more time on gameplay or what-have-you rather than graphics support because I don't have a problem with the current graphics (or lack thereof). HOWEVER, I can't deny that more people would play (and therefore donate) if there was something less intimidating that ASCII to play with.

Naturally, it's up to Toady in the end. And I have no real say because I have never donated

DF Suggestions / Re: Colored stockpiles.
« on: November 08, 2008, 05:49:50 pm »
Not sure about colored piles, just don't think i'd ever use 'em. But the ability to move/expand them is something I've often wished for, as well as Mike's suggestion for saving the profiles (I never store food and seeds together).

Merging piles and zones is an interesting idea, with merit, but what do we call meeting zones under this system? (I don't dissagree with the idea, merely point out that it'd have some problems.)

I'm sticking with ASCII primarily because I'm too lazy to set up a graphics set. I'm accustomed to the ASCII. While I see the point that many people here have made for better graphics support, I don't mind one bit. If i see a tile i don't recognize, I hit the spacebar.

IMO, the only reason too add ASCII at this point is to increase the number of players and therefore donators.

On the actual implementation of sepereating gfx from txt:

Just IMHO.

DF General Discussion / Re: User Interface: a question to all players
« on: November 08, 2008, 05:05:04 pm »
I haven't tried any graphics sets yet, and doubt i will. I did switch to a square font. I don't find the ASCII acward to use and agree that pillars appearing in place of capital 'O's drives me crazy when I see a screenshot.

I have to agree that gfx sets look better. But I'm so used to ASCII...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma Mist
« on: November 01, 2008, 09:10:01 pm »
Update: Grates (and bars) don't help generate magma mist. I tried both of these setups:
Code: [Select]
_%%
 WWM
 (many z-lv)
magma
(_ = grate, %% = pump; W = wall; M=magma
and
Code: [Select]
  %%
  WWM
 (many z-lv)
 _
magma

@peekama er...how's this different from what i've got?

I'll try that.

Just to confirm, grates aren't required for water mist, right? They're just used to prevent dwarves and such from getting washed away?

Well, it didn't work, 2 levels or 15, no mist from droping magma into magma...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma Mist
« on: October 31, 2008, 08:19:54 pm »
I know that i can toss stuf  in and make mist (i've executed a mayor and accidentaly lost some machine parts). I'm trying to make magma mist some other way, like a water-er-magmafall. (Other suggestions appreciated, too!)

I'm working on a 15-lv drop, i'll figure out how and post a video when it's ready.

It'll ignite anything it comes in contact with, I believe. ;D

Guess it's time to try a pump tower. On a low-wind map...

DF Gameplay Questions / Magma Mist
« on: October 31, 2008, 04:21:17 pm »
...namely, is there an easy way to make it? Water mist is easy, but magma mist seems to only appear when something large is dropped in. I was hoping a 2-z-lv drop would do it, but, alas, no luck. Should I just pump it higher?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Watch Tower Height
« on: October 31, 2008, 02:33:17 pm »
Slightly off-topic, but:

I built a defensive wall like so:
Code: [Select]
z=0

.,`'.
=====
.,`'.
z+1
.....
+++++
FFFFF
side:
 F_
  W
That is, fortifications built over open space from the top of the wall.

So, the siege arrives and arrows are flying through the fortifications (killed a cat and a carpenter IIRC).

My question is: did the arrows slip through the diagonal area between the wall and the fortification or did they make it through the fortification?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: A few questions.
« on: October 18, 2008, 11:30:59 pm »
Not real farmiliar with adventure mode, but:

1) go to a town (not sure if it has to be friendly), hit esc, option's on the bottom
2) find groups of vermin? to eat? probably something else, but i can't fathom what.
3) adventure mode is much less deep than dwarf mode. more quests'll come later. as for running out, I haven;t played adv. mode enough, but I've never heard of someone running out of things to do
4) I'm not sure if anywhere's safe, but you can NOT currently buy (or build) a house
5 and 6) No idea, but someone else should know

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Couple questions (mainly tantrums)
« on: October 18, 2008, 09:07:34 pm »
Do goblins ever give up? No, not in the long run, AFAIK.
How to prevent tantrums? Keep 'em happy. Well stocked with quality booze, a luxurious dining room, etc. Check http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Thoughts for more ideas/details
