2) Why haven't other people got their toolbar on the top?
I always move my task bars (in Windows) up top and I even remove the bottom bar in Gnome and move it's functionality up top.

I have no 'bar' at all, just a strip along the right with tray icons, clock, battery and wireless status, and desk-switcher.

Other Games / Terraria... Looks like Minecraft + Metroid?

Trailer

Is it just me, or does this look really freakin' awesome?

For those who can't/don't want to watch the vid: Think 2D side-scrolling Minecraft (complete with some kind of multilayer) with Metroid-like platforming and, if i'm seeing right, items/upgrades.

The main site is rather barren, but from the vid it looks pretty polished...

EDIT: Devs have posted an LP, didn't see it at first.

Creative Projects / Re: Programming la Next Game

Voted for Hacker Wars, because I'm a fan of hacking games :)

Either project sounds like a pretty large undertaking. How new are you to programming? If this'll be your first major project you might want to set your sights a little lower.

Network code can cause headaches if you're not very careful. I'm not familiar w/ VB's library, but you'll almost certainly have to create your own protocol: this can be fun or irritating, depending on the complexity required and if you enjoy it. If something goes awry (and it inevitably will), debugging net code can be troublesome, after all you have 2 programs operating in lockstep.

Not as familiar with AI, but finding a balance between "too smart" and "running-into-walls stupid" seems to be a common problem even among professional developers.

Any thoughts on next month's theme? I should have a lot of free time between the 1st and 16th of next month, might finally try my hand at one of these.

Plant balls should be a circle of 8 seeds/saplings (no mixing). Then you just compress them to turn them into clumps.

It used to take 9, messed w/ me when I updated and it'd changed...

Uranium is rare, but it also has the highest energy density of anything...
1 ore -> 4 fuel rods
1 fuel rod -> ~40k EU iirc

Bio-fuel's probably the easiest way to get quick energy, once you get a little established anyway. Bamboo farm and it's almost entirely renewable.

Now that I've discovered the terraformer in the industrial craft mod, I want to take a terraformer, a lot of dirt, some extraction pipe, a bunch of buckets, some cable, and a geothermal generator into the nether.

Make a wide flat area of dirt, plop down the terraformer, run a wire to it underground and connect to a geothermal generator, probably through an MDU to buffer the power, then use miner/extraction pipe to efficiently extract magma into buckets for power. I wonder if it would force grass and trees to grow, as well as flowers.

My testing in the real world resulted in a flower filled oasis in the middle of a desert.

and now i know what i'll be doing next time i play...

So say I make a vertical pillar of water generators and surround the shaft in Water, would all the power be concentrated at the ends for harvest or does power not travel through generators?
Nope, power only goes through cables (including switch cables), "luminators", and MFEs. (might've missed something...)

Quote
Can water generators share water blocks adjacent to them?
Haven't tried them myself; supposedly they can, but with a reduced efficiency.

Quote
Would wire energy loss factor in on stacks higher than 5?
I think water generators only output 3-4, so yes, probably.

Quote
As much as solar generators could potentially be more space efficient, I don't really want to sink all those resources into this. I already have all my iron marked for miners and pipes, and water generators seem like the easiest thing to make for the most output.

keep an ODE to help choose sites for your miners; unless you're really desperate for material (in which case I'd say "get drill, do it by hand"), find an area that returns at least 50 on the ODE.

Also: bat-pack is awesome

General Discussion / Re: Linux...how/why?

Recommended Linux Distros: Mint (for newbies) and Arch (if you know what you're doing and/or want to learn)

I've been using Linux almost exclusively for several months (mostly booting Win7 to update it >_>), even school stuff. Only had a couple small problems w/ LO: the backgrounds in a series of PPTs were screwed up, and a table in a DOC was on top of another one.

Mint is excellent for someone new to Linux; Wubi lets you install in about 4 clicks. I don't use it myself, but my GF loves it. WARNING: the default wallpaper is very very green. Easy to set-up and tweak, and if you do change your mind, a wubi install's easy to remove.

Arch runs awesome on my kerosene-powered cheese grater! Just don't run out of yogurt ;)
But seriously, it's a great system. A bit like DF actually: rather steep learning curve, but totally worth it. And actually IMO DF's more difficult...

True story: I can't play KotOR on Win7 (crashes every 3-4 minutes), but it runs just fine through Wine, just a couple tweaks. No full-screen though.

Never messed w/ Windows shell replacements...

How's performance/load time compare, SharpEnviro vs. Explorer?

One of the biggest reasons I've switched over to primarily using Linux is how much faster it boots...
'course, I guess even with the shell replacement there's still a lot of background services, but the question stands.

Multiplayer question:

Running a small server for some friends, going a little RPG/PvP. Using iConomy for money, mostly to but rare stuff (nether stone etc.)

BUT, we also want to track PvP kills, and be able to spend points earned from that in another shop... This would be separate from iConomy currency.

Currently I'm guessing we'll have to use soulsand for this alternate currency, but I haven't been able to find a mod for item-for-item trading: they mostly hook into iConomy (or something similar).

Anyone have any suggestions/know of any mods to help?
(Running Bukkit of course. Using NPCX for shops at the moment...)

Nope, it's from the same thread as ModLoader (link's been posted a couple times above, too lazy to repost)
