How about placing the coffins in some kind of death chamber?

Anyways, I have an applicant for consideration:

Name: Nashonluslem, aka Bloodypuzzle

Gender: Pick one, if I die, somebody else can take over my name and my work

Profession: I work with levers.  I create devices, and the mechanisms used in the devices.  I also create and place traps.  Now, perhaps one of your minions would like to pull this lever?  Come one, just pull the lever...

Reason for wanting to hench with us: To create beautiful devices of self-illumination, of course.  Perhaps your guests would like to stay in one of my luxurious rooms, with complementary beef wellington?  Just step over here, right next to the barrel with the food in it.  Never mind that glint of metal.  Yes, just a little closer...

How do we know you're not a spy? Just like you, I work for a higher goal than wealth or power.  And if you're at all dissatisfied with my work, feel free to kill me and give someone else my name.  After all, it's the work that's important, not the person.  Besides, everyone else wants me dead, though it's not my fault.  I didn't make them do anything...

What I suggest: We create traps where people chose their own fate.
Pull this lever, and they can leave without harm.
Pull that lever, and a dozen crossbows fire into them.
Tell them, "Feel free to grab a platinum goblet on the way out."
Then, after they grab the goblet: "What, you're having trouble walking while skewered on that spike?"
Freedom of choice!  The best form of chaos!

Seems you have a lot of dead animals that need processing.  So, I'd like you to meet Jack, who would be glad to live in a warm settlement for a change.

Name: Jack (feel free to chose the last name)
Profession: Leatherworker, Tanner, Butcher (in order of preference, but he has done all these in the past)
Personality: Jack is warm and sociable, but afraid of big crowds.  He can handle stress, but not incompetence.  He's experienced in working in small fur trapping camps located in cold, conifer forests, and is looking forward to settling in a warmer climate.  He is also interested in the new and exotic leather goods available in this settlement.

Give your starting dwarfs some skill in swimming so they can join in!  ;D

I don't think you can just walk off mortal wounds anymore...
I was playing version 0.28.181.39d and my character lost his right hand.  I thought, "No sweat, I'll just pick up the glove, Travel a little bit, and put the glove back on."

I travel, and the hand is still missing!

If hands don't grow back, I doubt lungs will.

Alliances might be out of our reach, but dogpiling the winner is a definite possiblility.  For example, the LCS could be sieged at the drill factory by the CCS, and sieged at the paper factory by the NRA.

I actually like the gas prices issue because it's something we all think about, and is a current hot button.  When nobody cares about gas prices, it could get "lost" in an update.

My rational for the public attire comes from current and past political conditions, specifically the Arch-Conservative societies in the East.  Though I had forgotten that there are many ways an Arch-Conservative society would look.

Anyone else see the movie 1984?  It's important to note that while the masses are ruled by one set of rules, the people in charge live by totally different rules.

Good point on the conflict with Arch-Conservative gas prices and Elite Liberal war stance.  Logic failure on my part.

At least the war issue seems interesting, though it's kind of funny that both World Wars occured under Liberal presidents (the first World War occured under the term of a former college dean, and we all know colleges are hotbeds of liberal thinking).

Honesty, I never even thought of the used plates or cars being hot, but that sounds great.  Thanks for responding in such a timely fashion, I'm quite impressed.  :)

DF Suggestions / Re: Leaving the fortress without abandoning it.
« on: July 26, 2008, 04:19:42 am »
Perhaps leaving the fortress without abandoning it would require some kind of check to see if it works, maybe even with a check each year to see if the fort expands, contracts, stays constant, or dies out.  Most of the working of the fortress could be handled very abstractly, with the existing residents just randomly milling about in adventure mode.  Still, it would be nice to see less fortresses die due to boredom.

Sorry I can't code, but a cool site for Liberal Crime Squad would be an auto dealership/chop shop.  After all, aren't there times where people would rather just spend a few thousand dollars on a car instead of stealing one?  Also, wouldn't it be kind of fun to make money by selling stolen cars?

Course, I understand there are far more important things to implement (I want to steal a helicopter!)

I had a few issues the liberal crime squad should champion:

Gas Prices: Liberals like high, conservatives like low.

Elite Liberal: Gasoline is illegal.

Arch-Conservative: Gasoline is free for anyone registered for the draft.

I think people can get the social commentary associated with Arch-Conservative.

War: Liberals don't like war (long hair hippie freaks), and conservatives love it (war mongers).

Elite Liberal: The Army is only for self defense, and other countries are influenced by trade polices, foreign development initiatives, and humanitarian aid.

Arch-Conservative: War is so constant nobody knows who we're fighting.

Public Attire: Conservatives want modesty, liberals want freedom of choice.

Elite Liberal: People can walk around as God originally intended :o

Arch-Conservative: Showing skin is punished by DEATH

I have to use some of the Elite Liberal stances as slogans until they become canon.  After all, ignoring issues nobody cares about is the Conservative thing to do!

I don't know a lot, but I think the only liberals that have debate attacks are characters with guitars, and the attack is based on heart and the music skill.  Thus, higher heart and music means higher attack.

in the latest release, sometimes the dead count toward your recruitment cap

You can remove the dead from your recruitment cap by disposing of the bodies.

Interesting bug in regards to this, if a leader dies and the body is recovered, sometimes the organization under the leader won't disappear until after the body of the leader is disposed of.

Thus, if your leader dies with no successor, train a successor before desposing of the body!  ;)
Course, don't let the cops raid your safehouse before then, otherwise they'll bury the body for you.  :'(

I'm not certain about now, but it used to be that whenever your recruits returned from hiding, they would continue to do what they were doing before they fled the safehouse.  I also recall there being a bug (well, maybe an unexpected feature is a better term) where they would be still selling brownies and such while in hiding.

I love this idea also, and want to hear more about starting riots!  ;D

Until then, I would suggest renaming your core people, perhaps with single, capitalized words, and setting everyone else to the more more standard tasks via the bulk assignment task.

Heh, risky play tends to keep numbers down anyways.  ;)
