DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Completely Ineffective Ranger
« on: October 30, 2008, 06:57:11 pm »
However much i want to belive that this adorable dwarf ate a raw monkey, game mechanisms makes this impossible, but i think i shall belive it anyway.
Maybe you should turn it into a hermit challenge? let the others starve and have him.. nawh, you'd get bored, i know i would.
Mod in the possibilty to use bone as construction material and make him a nice Rhesus Macaque house, containing a cellar full of skull totems.
Oh, and train his butchering skills

-edit-
Damn, malevolent ideas surging. Castle of bones, statues made of skulls.
Deforestation and wooden cities? I Shall make a kingdom out of elven bones and pave the roads with goblin skulls!

The squad AI are something i hope toady is working on right now. Although the actions of your squad caused a lot of grief(for you, fuck the dwarves) Atleast their moronity did not make them leave a well fortified and perfectly safe killing pit, to take a long way around to run through a tunnel and go outside to try to kill some goblins with their crossbows.. in melee.. unarmored.. and leave the entry wide open for any kind goblins to enter and slaughter the rest of the dwarves.
and for some reason they all did this, even when they weren't in the same squad.
Oh, and if you've got the patience to wait till he's grown, train him hard so he can get vengace. It would be an interessting community story

Worship him! Any socialy withdrawn dwarf gets in my good grace and pelting the critters to death with a crossbow just to see them die a slow and excrucicating death is a good way to get into the shrivered black piece that suffice for a heart that exists in all us malevolent DF players - And if you think im wrong, you've simply not been exposed enough.

Anyway, if you dont intend to elevate him to the glory he deserves you could check if something is wrong with your refuse pile, butcher or your gather refuse orders. Though i doubt any of them actually are faulty due to him slowly getting more and more sadistical i suggest you make him the captain of the guard and give him a artifact crossbow for his good work... or maybe a warhammer would be better as he seems to like getting up close and bloody.

DF General Discussion / Re: Educational Value of Dwarf Fortress?
« on: October 30, 2008, 06:27:18 pm »
There was a thread.. somewhere.. where the Op used DF for his class, think it was elementary.
It also spurred some ideas for a "child safe" mod due to the teach wanting to avoid the kids going home and talk to their parents how Urist was crawling towards his bed after gotten his throat bitten by a zombie fox.

Goblin loot is a bother to sort everytime so if im not in desperate need of iron - Chasm it all

Practical perfectionist - If it's too much work, wait untill i can get it done perfectly the first time. If it can't wait, get whatever nesscesary for it to function till i can make it perfect

Some dwarf got my attention? Spoil him/her. Another migrant in an accident? To the mass catacomb with them

Traps and millitary - Crossbows, lot's of em, due to the feeble, absent and the anticipatded unpridictibility of the dwarf AI... Or really unesscesary elaborate traps.

Trade - Stonegoods to entertain my stonecrafter, or whatever surplus is annoying me with filling up stockpiles. Like the time i forgot that tailor making silk bags on repeat... must have resulted in over 500 bags.

Nobles are completly ignored and currently they're spewing out sentences but haven't gone moody due to the splendor of my fort.

I've not actually tried it but i do know that constructing a floor tile over a smoothed floor will remove the smoothing and thus probably the engraving too.
So i guess you've got to make the engraver really happy and wreck his masterworks one by one.
That ARE masterworks right?
Or you just kill the engraver...
Or station guards next to him and then wreck his work.

Other Games / Re: Fable II.

Personally i've not encountered one bug yet and im on my second playthrough.
The world is made of maps sectors and there's no seamless travels like morrowind.
Lumin; the consequenses for a bad action feels rather tame. I mean, I shot down every single person in oakvale(Temple of shadows quest) and left the zone. I came back later and the town was repopulated and the new guards figured that i the guy with the big horns and crackling skin must have been the one who did it. anyway, got arrested and presented with three options, Fine of 15k(i think), community service or resist.
I picked community service.
Must have been the easiest 15k ever as i just had to kill 3 balverines.
And btw, katanas is imported from the only mentioned other contry, Samarkland, which only reason of existance seems to justify black peoples in 'Ye olde England and katanas.

Some tips.
Dexterious fighting style lvl 2 + clockwork gun/rifle is the best thing you can get early on with firearms. By entering the 'over the shoulder mode' you can shoot atleast twice as fast and with a clockwork gun you've got multiple shots per reload.
Woodcutting is probably easier but blacksmithing provides more gold, haven't tried bartending much so no comment on that one.
There's no reduced income when the console is shut off but theres a max limit that is reached in 8hrs and 30 min.
Oh, and by changing the console clock you can earn a days income by the time it takes to reboot.

Actually, i've had more collapses from ramping large areas then i did when just digging and the collapsing the floor tiles.
So i suggest you to do like Magua says

Well, the magma pipe was on the edge of the map and i wanted some space around the tower though i dont think it would have mattered much in my case as i plugged the volcano when excavating it.
But did you check the goblin mod?

Mod in those Crazy Goblins from the modding forum, then draft all your dwarves in a futile attempt to survive.
Also, I curse you for assisting my brain in comming up with the idea for my fort wich has taken forever to make but now i've finally produced a map for the community to view.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Pond retardation
« on: September 30, 2008, 08:44:24 am »
I've already have designated an underground river as source but they still ran back and forth.
gotta try forbidding the well, although it would be preferable to have them fill it at all time without having to check the waterlevel myself. but then, i guess i cant have everything ^^

DF Gameplay Questions / Pond retardation
« on: September 30, 2008, 06:48:47 am »
So im trying to figue out a way to stop my retarded dwarves filling a pond with the water from the same pond.
Basically i have a nice expensive well with a reservoir 1z beneath, the reservoir is connected to a little room 2 tiles wide where my pond is designated.
the purpose is to have the dwarves fill the reservoir through the little room but the retards goes to the well and takes water from there to fill the pond.

Designate stockpiles to only accept one kind of plant, one for helmets, one for tails etc. and forbid that kind of plant in the other stockpiles. any surplus of plants will go into the refuse pile and you will always have plants to cook/brew.
Designate a stockpile for only drinks and reserve some barrels for it.
