Other Games / Video Game Music V2
« on: April 14, 2012, 09:46:41 pm »
Since the other video game music thread is from 2010, I've decided to just go ahead and make a new one. It doesn't seem like necroing would hurt, since it wasn't a very time-sensitive topic, but tastes change and this seems like a safe bet. Also seems like a good chance to start fresh and cover great new tracks from 2011 and 2012.

Let's talk about great video game music and share youtube links! It'd be great to have more specific tracks to share rather than just giving a whole game OST for us to check out.

I'll kick it off with Skullgirls. I was futzing around the menu, and decided to view the credits, only to be greeted with an amazing song:

Our fighting game community here seems small, so it seems best to just mash us all into one topic rather than have a separate topic for each game. I think we're small enough that this might dual purpose as a general topic, but I'm mostly going to use this opening post for upcoming new games, because for some reason, there's a butt-ton coming out.

I'm pretty pumped for Skullgirls, so I'm going to write about it first.

Skullgirls is a 2D fighter produced by indie studio Reverge Labs. Mike Zaimont, a tourney player, is in charge of the general direction of the fighting itself, but while the game is mostly built with high-level play in mind, a good deal of the design choices aim for a good amount of accessibility and fun for casual and new players as well. There's also a lack of emphasis on tight execution, and more focus on other aspects of the game. Generally, it seems like most control decisions were made to be more intuitive, and made to be less of a possible interference in what the player is trying to do.

Features:
  • Cast of 8 characters at release, more slated to be released later as DLC.
  • Infinites detection. After a few loop repetitions, the character caught in it only needs to push a button to break out of it.
  • Tag-team style play, with custom team size. You can choose the size of your team, so you can go for 1v1 or 2v3 if you want.
  • Custom assists. There are some exceptions, like jumping attacks and supers, but you can pretty much use any move you want as a tag-in assist. It could be something as simple as a light punch, or it could be a command grab.
  • GGPO netcode. The popular PC netcode used in online fighting game emulation. Apparently, the game will also show latency in numerical terms of milliseconds rather than little connection bars, which is nice.
  • No true high/low unblockables. If you hit someone with an overhead and a low at the same time, they'll block both hits.
  • Ridiculously good hand-drawn frames. Apparently even beats out 3rd Strike in frame count.
Release Information:
  • Price tag set to be around $15-$20.
  • At initial release, will only be available via digital download on the PS3 and XB360 online stores.
  • Slated for a Q1 release.

Street Fighter X Tekken is a 2.5D crossover fighting game featuring characters from both of the games mentioned. The game aims to pull in fans of both series, but also to pull in players (especially Tekken players) new to the 2D style of Street Fighter games. Customization is the main vision of the producer, Yoshinori Ono, who introduces a gem system into the game to encourage diverse playstyles and unique builds. I don't have a whole lot of detail, but from what I've seen and heard, it's comparable to the rune system from League of Legends.

Features:
  • 43 characters revealed so far.
  • The mentioned gem system. Gems can boost stats, but only when certain conditions are met in a fight. For example, a gem that had something like a 10% defense boost for 3 seconds would only activate if you blocked x amount of moves in a row.
  • Tag-team style play, with teams of 2v2. You only need to KO one of the opponent's characters to win the round. The tag teaming is meant to feel very fluid, and you'll be able to switch characters during normal combos.
  • Pandora mode. A comeback system in which you sacrifice one of your characters in order to have infinite super gauge and power. However, a timer counts down for Pandora mode, and if it ends, you automatically lose.
Release Information:
  • For PS3, Vita, XB360, Windows.
  • Standard price tag for $60 in the US.
  • Slated for March 6th release in the US, and 9th for EU.

I will elaborate more as time go on, maybe. I might talk more about the Skullgirls characters.

Life Advice / Depressed Cousin Wants to Date Me
« on: March 19, 2011, 08:23:35 am »
I recently moved back into my parent's rather large house. They told me that some relatives had moved in recently as well. Apparently an entire nuclear family. Didn't care about that with the current state of my income, and moved in.

Now, everything was all fine and dandy for a month, then I actually left my room and conversed with them. Turns out my cousin (isn't my first one, but I don't really know where she is on my family tree) is one incredibly depressed girl of 18 years old. It doesn't help that she confesses she has a crush on me. I don't know how, considering she's had maybe eight glimpses of me when I had to leave my room for food, work, and school, and talked for about 20 minutes total. Anyways, she goes on to tell me a whole bunch of stuff about her best childhood friend telling her that she "doesn't need her anymore", her ex-boyfriend breaking up with her, and how I'll never return her feeling due to being related. Being a fairly care-free dude for the most of my life, I was only able to give a sorry half-assed talk. Her self esteem is quite low, she's ridiculously emotional and cries a lot, and she fears having independence for some reason that I'm not able to understand. I tried to get her to elaborate more on that, but it didn't get anywhere.

Telling her parents does not seem to be a very good option, as her parents read emotions like bricks, and they're likely to be more pissed at her whining than anything else.

She doesn't have insurance, and money is an issue, so going to a doc for antidepressants isn't a choice I can pursue in the short-term.

I'm a 19 year-old guy that doesn't know how to deal with this.

DF Modding / Gardens of Gensokyo V0.11a

Removed DL link for now.

I'm locking this for now, it's a bit unholy how unorganized all of this is, and the updated version has changed directions enough to possibly warrant a new topic when it's all polished.

DF Modding / Understanding Body Parts and Butchery?
« on: June 26, 2010, 05:49:46 am »
I honestly cannot make heads or tails of it. I'm at wit's end, and I would definitely appreciate some help.

Can someone explain exactly why butchering an elephant yields two tusks, and why it yields a heart? I'm following it through the material_template files, the b_detail_plan, the body_default, the tissue_template, but I still don't get it. It would be great if someone could walk me through this.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the end, I want to create a custom organ that comes from butchery, but I don't understand what exactly is required for that organ to come from butchery.

EDIT: Thanks much, guys, I've finally got it working alright.

Is there any way to affect the belarded-ness/muscularity range of certain castes or races?
