My guess is that it walked on a weapon or stonefall trap, got hurt, then stumbled to a cage trap and passed out.

Wait for the caravan and see if they have any axes or wood. If you don't have any wood buildings, there's really not much you can do other than that.

Yep. You'll need a wood-burning furnace and a piece of wood to start off your fuel reserve, then you can use that charcoal to start making your Bituminous coal into more fuel.
