1. Savescumming is the only way I can think of.
2. Easy. put up one job of every type, and figure out which ones aren't done by the end of a season. You could also just look at the {u}nit list and figure out what color you don't have any left of.
3. You can give dwarves nicknames and custom professions, so instead of "Urist McNewcomer, Recruit" you could have "Urist 'Useless' McNewcomer, Meatshield"
If you do custom professions, you can use Foreman (I can't seem to find the thread, though I didn't look very hard) or Manager (which I use because it has more features).
4. Well... you could organize your stockpiles in such a way that you can see how much of anything you have left just by glancing at them.
5. 'Attending Party' means the dwarf will just ignore you, sometimes for a year or more at a time, depending on how wild the party is. Recruiting them to the military and un-recruiting them will break up the party and send them back to work (small bad thought). 'Having a drink' is temporary just because they're thirsty. Double check that all the doors are unlocked and the paths are all clear. I'd have to see the fort to give any other help.
