Insofar as I've been able to tell, the only thing you can't mine with a gold pick is ebonstone.
Anyway, re: Jungle, I went in with silver armor + mining helmet and an enchanted boomerang. Set up a little hornet farming station (4 blocks on left and right of character, two platforms just above), pointed my cursor up, and turned on autohotkey until I basically had full cobalt and enough stingers to make a thorn chakram. Then it was running around killing maneaters for vines and collecting roses until I had enough to finish the chakram and make an ivy whip. The occasional skeleton attack even got me my first hook, so it was all good.
You can set up an even better hornet farming station if do something like so:Code: [Select]PP###

P = platform, O = open space, # = block-of-some-sort, C = Character. Then just shoot a rang (or flail-type weapon) out the opening. Can also just swing a sword or pickaxe, but that takes a lot longer. Then you just hold down the button (or toggle autoclick) until loot showers you from the sky.
Nah, that's just the giant chip on my shoulder about not being 100% l33t pro at every game on launch-day like everyone else in the world seems to do.
Is there some way to edit an existing character's appearance? I'm getting more sick of my pompadour every time I play.
Don't worry, I'm horrible at these games. Mostly because I like how things look and are less willing to mine straight down because of it, so prefer to spent time exploring for a way down.
Also, I have heard item editors can do this for you, but I don't have any, so I can't say for sure what ones and how they work.
EDIT: Umm, what?Spoiler (click to show/hide)

For looking at your generated maps in one large png picture, useful to find out where everything is.

Though I'm pretty sure that's a large world, I'm also pretty sure anyone's concerns that they might ever run out of room can be safely put to rest.
Task Manager tells me both CPU cores run at 100%, but neither Task Manager or Process Explorer can find any process that is using all resources or that shouldn't be there.
