When you say that shaving for non-health reasons is vanity, are you including any form of hair trimming or removal?
For example?
(As far as I can imagine, yes, hair trimming/removal for reasons other than health seems quite vain.)

Well, at least partially learned behaviour, I expect.

...I would like to make it known that I am not actually in any way attracted to the smell of arseholes, human or otherwise.

It is entirely conceiveable that you may have embarked to a site that, for whatever reason, prohibits trade with dwarves (you can actually check this status at embark by tabbing through menus/displays).

I'm not sure what causes this sort of "trade embargo". Distance from a civ? Intervening rivers or other caravan-impassable terrain?

Life Advice / Re: How to tell when someone is stupid...
« on: March 24, 2009, 12:26:50 am »
Ignorance to me usually implies stupidity. Being uninformed is one thing - deliberately shutting out the facts because you don't want to examine your preconceived beliefs is another; for example, creationism.
Uh-oh! (just kidding... I hope?)

I was about to disagree with you here, Jude, before I read beyond sentence number one.
Yes, it is important to distinguish between "uninformed-ness" and persistent, wilful/deliberate ignorance. Yes, ignorance of the latter type may well suggest stupidity.

Ponders the (ignorant, in the "uninformed" (or "forgetful"?!) sense) soup_alex: There ought to be distinct words for either particular type of ignorance.

Talk to this young lady also [random google picture  ;D]:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'm only slightly disturbed by the maiden's eyebrows.

Guys, I think some of us need to grow up a little here with regards to body hair, and in particular female body hair. Although it's perhaps not as useful today as it was once before, growing hair on your body (yes! even under the armpits! and yes! even if you're a girl!) is quite natural and nothing to be ashamed of (like farting, for example. Though we're conditioned to consider the scent of each others' rectums (recta?) repellent, not farting is ultimately more harmful to one's health).
Fair enough if you consider it important to shave for health reasons. Shaving the hair from one's body, legs or underarms for any other reason, to me, indicates vanity—and I can remember when vanity was not considered a virtue. Then again, I have my own peculiar code about "fashion" and "beauty" and conforming to others' standards. I am in the minority.

Pardon the threadomancy, if it can be considered as such. I have strong feelings about this subject (in case it evaded your notice).

It is often difficult to tell whether somebody on the internet is "stupid". Principally, this concept of stupidity is subjective; additionally, try to separate stupidity from ignorance.

Taking someone's username/handle/whatever-you-want-to-call-it can perhaps sometimes lend helpful hints (e.g. being capable of correctly spelling "Valdemar Poulsen", let alone being aware of him, might automatically suggest someone of greater intellectual capacity than someone identifying themselves as "£$%^ToKiOhOtElRoXxOrS!!!1^$£"). Personally, I have seen more evidence to support inaluct's assertion that (in some cases, not all) users that add (typically suffix) numerals to their name are somewhat less intelligent than others—this isn't to say that value judgments based on an individual's username are to be encouraged (obviously?).
Strife26, you raise a valid point by stressing that the number in your username is unique to you for reasons other than every number preceeding it was taken (or that it indicates the year of your birth... "blondegurl89"... ugh), but I'm compelled to argue that some users prefer not to capitalise their screen names for similar reasons (e.g. as has been suggested, some find it more aesthetically-pleasing, or (not similarly, but still a factor for some) because case-sensitivity is not always enforced, and people can become attached to their usernames appearing in a particular format).

[edit: I can't believe I hacked all that out just to present my take on stupidity being suggested by username styles]

This thread:

WHAT.

Christians, please, just... sort it out amongst yourselves.

Apologies to Mr. Miles (I skipped a few pages, this poll may have been concluded by now? If not, I am sorry not to have contributed to it in any particularly meaningful way—it's ten to four AM—but shall endeavour to answer at a more suitable time)

Life is, in a word, children.

In 249 my brother, Umxu Goblinname, settled in Frostballs the Ache of Spite.
He is also my uncle.

204
Not sure if this is considered cheating or not though D: haha.
I hope not ;)

Oh, and another interesting fact: with little experience, your miners won't always leave a rock or rough gem for every tile they dig/channel, but as they become more proficient the probability that they do, skyrockets. It's normally quite sensible therefore to start mining in areas of plentiful, low-value stone while your miners are green, and save ore and gem deposits for when they become skilled or better.

I thought that sieges were more to do with having the SIEGER tag (which goblins don't have... I guess BABYSNATCHER does imply sieges of a sort, then)?

I'm reluctant to remove INTELLIGENT/CAN_SPEAK, but suppose that since they're currently only using the goblin language file at the moment...
...is there a way of encouraging them to be very hostile towards dwarves, humans and elves, but sometimes friendly towards goblins? I'd always fancied that "alliances" were pretty much solely based on inter-ethic harmony.

Musluk, they're currently just using INTELLIGENT. I seem to recall seeing an instance of a race having INTELLIGENT and one or two of the tags that it already implies (maybe goblins?), but I'm either imagining this or have edited it out  :-\

206
Also, if you embark on a race's settlement, you'll be by default friendly with them.
Weird, I didn't know this happened.

Thanks for the tips: I've currently got them on ITEM_THIEF but not BABYSNATCHER; would I really have to remove INTELLIGENT/CAN_SPEAK? Goblins have it, yet seem happy enough to war with other civilisations (well, dwarves).

Also, is there a way of having a race appear in the "neighbours" screen on embark, e.g.

dwarves
humans
goblins   -----
elves
skaven    -----

...and could this not happening have something to do with my custom race being settled in caves, which don't normally appear on maps?

207
Hullo,

As is sometimes the case, I've come back to DF after a short-long hiatus with the intention of modding-in a new race whose concept I've borrowed from other sources (if you're interested, they're pseudo-skaven from the Warhammer setting... I'd forgotten about "ratmen" already being a creature type, but I've given my "skaven" a few more tags like [INTELLIGENT], [CAN_CIV], [GEM_PREF] and tweaked their range of personality and ethics).

For those of you not familiar with the skaven, they don't generally get along with... anyone, including each other. On inspection, it would appear that they are characteristically cowardly (the Ledgends are filled with references to assorted skaven leaders getting into scraps with creatures of all sizes, before invariably quitting the field, tail between legs), and breed at a suitable rate from their cavern homes.
The problem is, despite being given a moral code slightly more relaxed than that of the goblins (most crimes are acceptable; treason is still a capital offense, and some are merely personal matters), these evil rat-men are perfectly happy to cohabit with anyone. I even sent an expedition to a suspected rat-hole to see if they were torn to shreds, and my bearded guinea pigs have actually settled in the tunnels and warrens of a race that should be their sworn enemy. The (skaven) guards are even protecting the dwarf rangers from marauding antmen.

How do I make them more... eeeeeeeeeeeevilllll? Is there any point in preserving this fortress—currently suffering from a mild FPS-leak, given the presence of a chasm full of beasties, plus the skaven settlers, plus the dwarves—or will it become unusable anyway, with further modification of the raws?

Cheers,

A Portrait of the Miner as a Young Dwarf (meh, not great, but ok)
Like this one a lot; and "Lord of the ≡Dolomite Ring≡", and "Elves in the Walls" (think I'll have to read this one again, soon).

The Schist block Roads to Freedom trilogy, including The Age of Reason (200-201) and Pig Iron Bars in the Soul.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Quick Question about Cages.
« on: August 17, 2008, 05:43:31 am »
Here's a thought - what if you used the new dump designation on the cage, so the cage and everything inside is marked for dumping. Then just k over the cage and remove the dump, so everything inside the cage will be dumped, but not the cage itself. Would that work?
No, I don't think cage contents can be marked for dumping as easily as that (UNFORTUNATELY), built or unbuilt.
