There's an artifact (l)ist?!  When did this happen?  Lol.  I hate it when I miss an entire option in the interface.  Thanks for waking me up.
Surprised you didn't locate it accidentally, it being right next to the default loo(k) key: I didn't know how to make moving records until I built a Farmer's Workshop and hit the wrong key for "process plants (barrel)".

Mmmm... chunks.

I'm going to have to step down and let someone else take this challenge: no trees on this glacier!

i was under the impression that if you make them backpacks, they'll use them
At the minute, I think backpacks are only used to hold rations (for extended patrols etc.) in Fortress Mode :-\

Actually, whether trees need to be floored-over or not (if they can), are they capable of supporting an indefinite number of adjacently-linked tiles in the same way as other solid tiles? I think the staircases should be, at least...

Experience is also used to gain attribute increases (and this little punk is getting re-drafted as soon as he's done something useful with those rock crystals).
Thanks for the advice, though: I'll see if having a stockpile for them to move the lye to will make any difference.

Update: Would you believe it, moved the lye to a stockpile among the ash bars etc., and I'm still seeing the same "needs lye-bearing item" message. I'm beginning to wonder if I should just cut my losses and go for the quick route to potash before this idiot wastes any more wood/ash...

What a waste of dolomite...

When do you not have twenty thousand dolomite by year two?
When you've settled on a volcano, and the only non-igneous layer is siltstone :'(
...a big switch from my last fort, which was dug into a mountain rather completely consistent of dolomite and various iron ores.

This got me thinking: how to make an above-ground fort in a wooded area more awesome?

Answer: TREEHOUSES. Yep. Construct ladders/stairs near trees, climb a level, and spread floors around—connecting tree-top to tree-top with floating "bridges" if you feel like it (hmm, are the tops of tree tiles walkable? or would they need to be floored, too?). This method of linking floating platforms above-above-ground should help you save some saplings, too, but remember not to fell the trees that support your tree-houses!

I may be wrong, but I believe that "remains" refers to the vermin equivalent of corpses.

Hi.

Am I missing something, or are those BUCKETS (CONTENTS: LYE) kicking around by my glassmaker's feet there for some other purpose, entirely?

Background: I've opted to set up a very small glass industry to make use of the Normal-skilled Glassmaker immigrants the Mountainhomes keep sending, and the small supply of rock crystals (no sand) I've found on-site. I've basically given this one Glassmaker his own group of workshops so he can work the whole production chain (don't want my farmers wasting their time with more important things to do on the other side of the fort) and activated the relevant labours. I'm making lye for potash rather than going straight from ash->potash, as the wiki suggests that more tasks = more experience—I've only ever made potash directly from ash before, which didn't seem to require buckets.

The problem is, now that I've made some lye (and I don't want to use up any more buckets just storing the stuff... seriously, one unit of lye per bucket? Do I look like I'm made of buckets?!), the lazy stunty glassblower I've assigned to the job doesn't want to turn it into potash for some reason.

...if it turns out that I need to wait for the damn stuff to be taken to a "lye stockpile" before he can do anything with it, I swear that this one is going to find employment in my "Magma Sciences" division.

My DM, recently-arrived, is waiting for his rooms etc. to be dug out (I hit a rather large gold seam, which didn't help... and neither did having several other large digging projects on the go when he deigned to grace us with his presence), but I must say he's being rather patient. Also, it looks as though he won't care too much about the quality of what he gets (though this fort is still in 38e, I think).

If we're talking about "artifact pig tail shirts", a blowup of nearly any frame from the intro movie would be spectacular. Especially the "erk!"

Hmm. If I get the time, I might bother Toady for permission (whether it applies or not, who cares?) and make one (one!) myself.

Wouldn't you be in too much agony to notice the hot babes? :-\
Only if you were GAY. "Hurr hurr" etc.

 :P

Cage him, and sell to the elves.  They want to have one of your nobles for dinner.
Come on, am I the only one who giggled at this one?

One of my first artifacts was a pig tail cap that menaced with spikes of pig tail cloth. I decided it was meant to be a jester's cap, and interpreted it as maybe having studs of brass for bells.
In order for it to include any tiny brass bells, the loony who made it would have had to pinch at least ten metal bars from your stockpiles, in addition to the cloth ;)

One of mine has just knocked out a pretty face-veil (yes, a pig-tail-face-veil) that references some of the other artifacts my fortress has seen: there's an image of a pig tail shirt (in pig tail), a pig tail dress (in pig tail), and "a diorite mechanisms" (in... diorite. What the hell?!)
...the concept of artistic interpretation is clearly lost on this dwarf.
