DF General Discussion / The truth behind Dwarf Fortress
« on: November 07, 2008, 08:58:48 am »
So I just started a new fortress and while looking around for entrance locations, I found this:

I looked at it for a while and it reminds me of something. Yes, you're right, a SWASTIKA!!

LOOK! PROOF!

This is indisputable evidence that Toady one is involved in a secret nazi cult hellbent on world domination!
We must act now!

I found this excruciatingly hilarious and decided to post.
My fortress has a bridge over a magma pipe for an entrance, just cause I can and recently we ran out of food while moving farms from outdoors to indoors, well, some people wheren't to happy about that and without me noticing, this happened.

Luckily no important dwarves died and i got a good laugh.

So I was minding my own business, waiting for my bridge over the chasm to be completed so I could wall up my temporary entrance when suddenly I get this message.

A few levels down in the chasm lives a Gremlin which I planned to catch and tame some day, my question is this: I know that if a creature has killed it cannot be tamed because it's received a name, right? Well, this gremlin hasn't killed anything but it has a name, can I still tame it?

Title pretty much says it all.
Due to human error, Two of my three legendary miners died in a cavern collapse and the third miner/mayor is misserable.
I've already had one tantrum from the clerk and I don't want more but it's gonna take a while to prepare burial chambers, could I just crush the corpse under a drawbridge?
It would make bad thoughts from the body rotting technically wrong, would it work?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The tale of Asmel "Kobold slayer" Nishlisat
« on: September 24, 2008, 08:39:10 am »

Thread music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zecVqgZSIxM

In a distant world, far far away, a new bastion of dwarven might was established in the glory of Armok to serve as home for the dwarves that later came to inhabit it.
In the year of 204 after the reforming of might which shaped the world, one year after the creation of the city of Towerroasted, the citizens who had grown accustomed to the peaceful lives in the great city had their lives turned upside down.
At mid day, the seventh of malachite, screams are heard from the brook, the alarm is sound! "Quickly, inside everyone!" they yelled. Frightful of what might lurk below, all obeyed and rushed for the gates.

A quick ensemble of engravers and peasants where established to defend the great city, against overwhelming odds they selflessly rushed out to the brook to save those who where behind.
What they found was a massacre, several bodies, mutilated beyond recognition lay on the ground in an unholy mess, Urist tried to hold back his plump helmet biscuit lunch.
"Split up!" said captain Asmel and the men obeyed, the soldiers split into groups of two and searched the hillside for whoever, or whatever did this.

Not long after, screams where heard from the wagon and the men rushed to aid but it was too late, Tosid Istbarkivish was surrounded by vile creatures, no larger than the dwarves themselves but the citizen stood no chance. Watching in horror, the men are frozen in place. Asmel sees, on a hill close to the helpless citizen, a vile vermin wielding a bow is firing at the defenseless citizen, Asmel's hate grew and in a fierce battlecry, louder then the roar of a bear, he ran for the vile creature. The short humanoid turned and was horrified at the furious dwarf running at him, he fires his bow but Asmel dodges the arrows with in his fury. In the last few feet, Asmel pounds the ground with booming thunder and jumps higher than a tree! landing on the vile vermin and engaging in gruesome battle.

In the pile of bloody gore and guts, Asmel "Kobold Slayer" Nishlisat emerged victorious.
The companions of the vile vermin turned from the bloody, still breathing body of the citizen and with fear unlike anything known to them before, they ran faster than their small legs could carry them.

The dead where given ceremonies fit for gods while Asmel was knighted by the baron and given the official title of Kobold Slayer. Let it be known far and wide of Asmel's bravery and fearlessness.

Or do they have to be one level above the water?
And what level of water (1-7) is required for water wheels to work above or on the level of the water?

Also while I'm at it, would this work? (Side view)

Title says it all.
I need to know before I embark.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Strange ambush
« on: August 05, 2008, 08:52:46 pm »
So I was minding my business when suddenly I got a very odd message, "A dwarf has sprung from ambush!" and the camera focused to my cage traps, there was a few goblin wrestlers standing around and a swordsdwarf in one of the cages.

Wait, what the hell?
Can someone explain this?
I dealt with the ambush and the swordsdwarf is in my animal stockpile inside a nice copper cage but I'm clueless as to what just happened.

Also, when my dwarfs ran outside to collect all the loot I had another goblin ambush but there was a hostile hammerdwarf among em, I kicked his ass and all but what the hell is going on here?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Best way to capture a Giant?
« on: July 30, 2008, 02:57:38 pm »
To start off, have a look at my fort: http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-3177-banehollow
See the giant in the caves? I want to capture it.
Placing cage traps and all that is no problem but the problem is getting her to walk into the traps.
Undisturbed, she'll just stand in one small area of about 5 tiles and only move when I send those useless soap maker migrants down there and if I try to place cage traps close to it my mechanics will become dwarf bacon.

How am I gonna capture it?

Also, I'm new to this forum so sorry if this is the wrong section.
