I genned a world and started a fortress... everything on the non-hunting front is going well, including the fishing. I managed to start somewhere without carp.

However, my hunter just got mauled by a cougar.

This is, in theory, a good idea. You don't need to carefully block off refuse, as miasma isn't generated outside. You also can control the amount of stone you get, which is useful for obvious reasons.

This is, in practice, a god-awful idea. If you want all your dorfs to have housing, you have to spend years building them walls and whatnot, plus you'll end up having ridiculous amounts of wood instead from clearing out forested areas. Plus, it's a pain in the ass to defend.

Does anyone else like making them? Personally I think half the fun of playing DF is making a messed-up deathtrap in fortress mode, letting goblins overrun it, and going through it in adventure mode.

Hmm...I might go ahead with a dedicated gfx card instead.  Was looking at the EVGA 8600gt on newegg.  Probably wouldn't play 07-08 games, but it is only $50 (assuming EVGA has a good mail-in rebate reputation).
An 8600?  Actually not that bad.  Certainly could only run Crysis on the lowest possible graphics if at all, but still just so much better then an ICS/IGPU (Integrated ChipSet/Integrated Graphics Processing Unit)

Dude, what? An 8600 will easily run Crysis on medium-high settings at 45-60fps.

There's wagons in dorf mode, but they're AI-only, and I would like to see my dorfs and adventurer be able to commandeer vehicles.

Wagons, bicycles, any sort of vehicle would be good.

Hell, maybe it could be modded so that dorfs can build mecha... Dorfen Lagann, anyone? ;D

I also have a world with no playable bronze colossi where I like to see how far I can get solo as a human.

(For the playable bronze colossus, I also modded it so that the playable version has a brain and is intelligent.)
