Just bought Secret Government. Love the concept and the complexity, but holy shit are there typos and wrong numbers everywhere. They ended early access but the game is clearly unfinished.

I tried Ancestor's Legacy. I hated it. The UI and pathing and combat are all mediocre, and the story is tedious and nonsensical, for example:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Play it if you really really want a medieval RTS, but you are probably going to be disappointed.

DeKaFu, I think you second spoiler is exactly what they planned. You just had to know. I too had to look up stuff for the ghoul and it was my first real run. I died/retired the first two runs and then picked ghoul, and felt like I had to go through ever card in the game to actually finish the run. They definitely should have locked it behind at least beating another path first.

O wait. I just remembered Kenshi. It's like an RTS survival base building game, but that hasn't stopped me from RPing as my first character. And that's from someone who doesn't really RP.

Also, if you don't care that none of the NPCs have personality, Colony Survival comes to mind.

Got recommendations for good singleplayer survival games? Extra points if its got base building and NPCs that join your lil settlement

This might scratch your itch. It's a favorite of mine.

Any games out there like the stronghold series, but waaay more stretched out time-wise? It'd be cool if I could build a kingdom from scratch and wage war with other kingdoms.

Mmmmmmm, I'm a little loathe to recommend it because the endgame in singleplayer is unbalanced/weak... but Ymir is kind of like... very complex Strongholf over a much longer period of time. Multiple settlements in your pocket empire, etc.

The enemies are lacking/messed up though. Give it a look-see!

It looked and sounded interesting as first, but the more I looked into it the more flaws I saw. Maybe once it comes out of early access and the bad reviews die down, I'll try it, but it really reminds me of those browser games where attacking is done while people are offline and you don't actually control the battle.

I recently found out that in order to beat the game, you don't actually need to reach the rocket on the map and repair it, and that you can actually just build one. Which made all my attempts to mass migrate my entire base multiple times completely pointless. Not only was in a boring grindy mess to do, but I don't see a reason to ever do it. Why burn hundreds/thousands of rations, expose your guys to dangerous environments, and abandon resources that you can't move, when you could just not do that and get the same result?

Let's try something a little more abstract for a recommendation. Tells me some games you guys wish you could play again for the first time. Something that made you go "man, I wish I could wipe my memory of this game because it's so damn unique and awesome to experience".

For me, one such game was cultist simulator. It was just constant "there are lots of special rules here and you have to figure them out".

I specifically like when you have each unit tracked through a lenghty periode of time - like in dwarf fortress, dominions 5 and Close Combat. Any recommendations in that area?

Kenshi might have what you're looking for. Large fights can drag on and different parts of the body have healthbars.

I wonder if it would be too expensive to branch the game into two versions. One where he can keep his vision, and another where he builds the game around what the community wants. I really liked the game, but having the rules say that you can't just send resources to others, and then watching someone appear right next to me in the middle of nowhere and going straight into a city with massive walls in a week really took any motivation to play out of me. Either incorporate it into the game or prevent it from happening. Make it feel like there is no cheating.

The commandos line apparently has at least one character with a knockout syringe? And is in the right time frame. It's definitely my go-to thought for top-down tactical war game with shenanigans... even if I've never actually played it or watched gameplay footage, heh.

I can't say for sure, but I also don't think it could be anything else, lol. I'll consider this solved.

433
It's a top-down tactical game taking place during a war. I remember throwing rocks over fences or through holes in a fence, and playing as a scientist/doctor, who used a syringe to knock people out. There were multiple characters with their unique abilities and had objectives to complete. Played it ~20 years ago, maybe longer, so it's nothing new.

I love CDDA, but yeah it's not going to scratch the itch I have.
