DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Above ground castles
« on: May 20, 2010, 02:31:48 pm »
Since I'm a paranoiac when it comes to safety(I prefer to lose with fun to big powerful critters, not annoying seiges), I ALWAYS plan to build up a castle type of situation above ground around my entrance to the underground.

I include the creation of a moat all the way around the large fortress(At least 30x30 squares) above ground.  A full on moat with a single drawbridge is a great way to keep everyone safe while you finish training up the military as needed.  Then you can pop open a rathole on the other side of the map, send up the military, and bumrush the seigers from behind.

It's when you get the more fun critters like demons and big ancient thingies of all shapes and forms that it's fun to watch your place crumble.

I think my favorite has to be...

Itdun Evonishen Thebilesarigest Abir... or...
Itdun Loverpassionate the Silky Quiescent Gloss of Romance

Itdun most often takes the form of a dwarf and is associated with Love

I like him because he's got, by far, the longest name I've ever seen for a God.  Plus he was worshipped by one, and only one, dwarf in my entire fortress of nearly 200 at the time.  What's more amusing is that dwarf was a simple peasant soldier who, due to long periods of time at a duty station, had no relationships beyond acquaintances.  Until he died gloriously in battle against a Unicorn.  I think he was trying to hug it and it didn't take kindly to the attention.

.... I think of the possibilities of underground development every time I see a quarter acre patch of bare ground.

Thank you for this.  Some of it I had figured out, but this helps even more.

I've found it easier for me to just rename all immigrants that have military skills... The first lucky drunk to come wandering in is renamed General or some version there of and is obviously turned into the militia leader.  The next 2 are named Captains 1 and 2(I know, right?  Totally imaginitive!)  After that, all drunks with military skills are named Soldier 1, 2, 3, etc.  When I've got 20 total military dwarves, the next batch to come in are given appropriate names for joining the eventual guard slots.

I've yet to bother with actually assigning training or anything like that.  Usually I just form up a squad or two whenever they are needed and send them with the direct orders to attack/kill whatever invader is coming in.  Then I disband the squad so they can get right back to work.  I've been afraid to set up training commands or barracks or anything else like that due to all the horror stories I've seen about non-stop training and useless military stuck in loops.

I get a migrant wave and in some huge coincidence I get two legendary blacksmiths that are in a relationship with each other. Now, for some unknown reason one of them decides to go over to local carp pond which is fucking SWARMING with the little fuckers. So he gets dragged in and promptly drowns. The other blacksmith then throws a tantrum and starts punching people. That's where my fucking hammerer decides he has to step in and crush the surviving blacksmith's head with his hammer. I was looking at my screen in rage for about five minutes before coming up with a devious plan to break all of the bones in that goggle-eyed little cunt's body. Long story short, he's not walking much anymore.

My hammerers never get a chance to hurt anyone.  They moment they go to look at their lovely quarters, they get locked in and left to starve.

trapping and starving them is fun too.  Takes a long time, though.

yeah, sometimes you end up missing the human caravan

This is why you make TWO trade depots. You can trap the elves in one and the humans in another.

Exactly.  Then you need a third so the dwarven caravan can come and leave without being molested.

Thanks Psieye... I suppose I'll just have to learn to live with it until it gets worked on in some future version.

We dwarven types hate the Elves because they're closely allied with one of the most evil, dangerous, horrid, hateful, spiteful, cruel, sneaky, and devious species in all of creation.

I will let the famous dwarf, Durkon, explain just how horrible these creatures are...

I'm a semi-retired chef.  I don't go messing around with the code in games.  I play the vanilla versions or some relatively stable version thereof.  So I'm kinda looking for a way to do this without resorting to learning how to tweak the game on my own.

A thought occurred to me, but I can't check it until tomorrow.  My gaming time for today is over.

I'm thinking if I go through my hauler/peasant dwarves and disable everything but cleaning on their labor list they'll either clean or party... hopefully they'll clean more than they party, but I have no clue which it'll be.

The outside walls will be washed away with rain, but I guess I have to live with the bloody floor I laid down in the aboveground fort area.

Oh well.  Perhaps we'll get lucky and have it implemented eventually.

Why? Blood is a glorious thing.

Blood is a glorious thing, yes...

But it's also extremely unsightly and messy.  It needs to be cleaned up.

Besides, how much more frightened do you think the enemy would be if they kept losing their troops to my fortress, then when they show up, there's no sign that a fight happened?

Rabedakan, FreckleFortune, a Palm Piccolo

This is a Palm Piccolo.  All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality.  It is encircled with bands of palm and rose gold.  This object menaces with spikes of iron and pig iron.  On the item is an image of the Lucid Secret, the lignite scepter in palm.

**********************
Couple questions/observations...

This was the second item created in my current fortress.  The first, obviously, was the Lucid Secret, a lignite scepter.

What the hell is a piccolo doing with menacing spikes of iron and pig iron?  Who's going to want to play the piccolo if its going to stab them in the mouth?

Piccolos are one of the smallest instruments ever... how is it that it took an entire bar of iron, another bar of pig iron, another bar of rose gold, and 3 palm logs to make?  I was going to make a sarcophagus out of that rose gold, damnit!

And why, oh why?... Why would you carve an image of someone elses creation in your own special creation?  Why not something a bit more heroic?

Ok... I admit it... I'm a bit of a nut when it comes to keeping things clean.

I've got this beautiful white floor of Chalk in my main meeting hall.  It's covered with so many engravings that every sapient being that steps inside is immediately struck with joy at being in such an amazing room.

However...

There's blood all over the floor.  The last invader died a rather messy way in the traps(2 legs, 2 arms, head, and torso all separated).  He apparently bled copiously and now his blood has been spread through many areas of the fortress.

It's an unsightly red stain across my beautiful white fortress.  I even have bloodstains on my pristine white chalk fortress walls.  How can the enemy be blinded by the reflecting sun from my walls if it's all covered in blood?

Some of my idle dwarves will occasionally clean up a bit here and there, but it's never enough.

Is there ANY way at all to designate a serious cleanup effort in order for all my idle dwarves to focus on major cleanup?

Here's a question... Does it really matter?  Tileset or pure text ASCII?

The fact is we're all hooked on and playing DF, regardless of the interface.  That's like saying those (insert religion) over in the other town with stained glass in their place of worship are going to hell because it's just going overboard to use stained glass when you don't have any.  Y'all are worshipping the same god in the same way, just one of you has different decorations.

On another note... Can anyone pop me a message explaining how in the hell to get pumps working?  I tried following the tutorial on the wiki for a water powered pump system, but apparently I'm a dumb-ass.  I can't get it working.

I had set up an underground flowing river from the brook on the surface and was hoping to use that to power a few things as well as eventually set up an aqueduct for a continuous waterfall in the meeting room.  But I can't get the pump system to work.
