General Discussion / Re: District-9, August 14th
« on: August 19, 2009, 01:11:21 am »
People forget that the movie is satire. I don't think the behaviour of the common Prawns is because they're regressing into a more animalistic species, but that the harsh environment (aka nasty slum) they live in brings out their animalistic tendencies. The same thing happens to humans living in the exact same environment.

Slum dwellers in third world countries aren't reverting to a more savage form of human, and the native tribes of the amazon aren't "savages" or "barbarians". The culture that these people live in, shape their lives and their behaviour. The Prawns were put in District 9, a place without education or proper infrastructure akin to the jewish ghettoes of nazi germany. Of course they're gonna run amok.

That being said, I think the Prawns are a satire of human behaviour during times of extreme hardship.

I won't be buying one, mainly because I have one of the original 80 gig PS3s with full backwards compatibility. :3 Also, the PS3 slim looks weird and a little cheap. I like the looks of my obese PS3, cuz it's got curves in all the right places.

Lionheart has Queen Elizabeth I think, so it's not victorian. It's also depressingly linear and the game favours melee over magic.

Eww. I read the wiki page. Eww. His relationship with his grandmother... I don't know which is worse, that, or the spoiler above. :(

General Discussion / Re: Worst examples of culture.
« on: August 09, 2009, 08:52:20 pm »
1. weird fetishes (*cough* japanese porn has engineered the rise of some the weirdest)

2. the culture of stupidity that exists in high schools in north america, where high achievers are socially penalised.

3. the icy social climate of my current city of residence (vancouver). many people have noted that vancouverites are some of the most unfriendly in canada, and people say it's way harder to meet people here than in toronto or montreal.

4. people so content with their own culture, that won't even consider the cuisine of another. my husband is a chinese immigrant, and he recently returned from a business trip to australia with a bunch of chinese from china. he was frustrated because whenever he wanted to go for dinner, they always had to have chinese food because "they don't like western food". On days that they couldn't eat out, rather than eat western food they'd make instant noodles. I'm sure this happens in every culture.

I don't think the code patch is incompatible with Tamriel Rebuilt, because... I'm using both right now. Did you get the latest version?

No one has mention Tamriel Rebuilt yet? It's a community mod project that's trying to mod in Morrowind's mainland. They have the Telvanni section completely done, so you can go to the Telvanni capital and join the mainland Telvanni, do quests for them and rise in rank. I don't think they have same type of stronghold quests that the Vvardenfell Telvanni does.

The mainland is beautifully modded, and I'd encourage anyone that's interested in modding to check Tamriel Rebuilt out. It's amazing to see what's possible with the construction set. You can create environments and quests that easily rival vanilla Morrowind.

Yeah, I heard about how foreigners actually stirred the Somalis into this rampaging swarm of hornets. The Somalis organised themselves into pirates, as a response to foreigners taking advantage of them.

Free, unless you bought or your computer came with the Ultimate Edition of Vista. Elsewise you gotta spend like $279 to buy Windows 7 Ultimate.

Listen carefully. If we should ever become separated, it is imperative that you make your way to the Friendly Arm Inn. There, you will meet Khalid and Jaheira. They have long been my friends, and you can trust them.

The thread title makes me want to play BG. ><

33°C isn't that hot at all. It's nice T-shirt weather.

I'm by the ocean, with the humidity it supposedly feels like it's over 41c. :(

Man. It's 33c in my room right now, and I don't even have the option of building that homemade air conditioner. I don't have fans, or garbage cans. Or even an icemaker. All I have is sweat, and the occasional errant breeze. :(

I've had Dawn of Discovery crash when alt+tabbing on my desktop. I'm using windows 7 and the game is also minimized somehow whenever I get a message on MSN.

I discovered that if I use my other laptop and send a bunch of messages to my desktop, I can make the game crash. I thought it was cool, but my friend was upset cuz he was the one playing. :D

Of the City Building Series (Caesar, Pharoah, Cleopatra, Zeus), the last one released was Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom. I personally think it's the best in the series, and the least painful to get into. I tried replaying Caesar II a few days back, it's hard!
