DF Gameplay Questions / Mayor's in a coma
« on: August 27, 2009, 04:13:08 am »
My Mayor got attacked whilest out cutting wood and has a yellow head wound. He was rescued and since, has not left his bed or woken up from "unconscious" in almost two years. This wouldn't be a problem except that Expedition Leader (which he was when he first was injured) and Mayor are apparently lifetime terms- I can switch him off the other three duties he had but not this one. Other dwarves are feeding and watering him, which is frankly a drain of resources at this point, despite the fact that he is a Legendary dwarf and one of the origial 7 out of 60 now.

Is there any way around this stupidity? Will he wake up? He is in the cheap little 3x3 room he had picked out before his brain trauma, any good ideas on how to kill someone quickly in such a room? Magma and plumbing are way too far away from him to be useful, I could manufacture some trap components though, I have all forms of production available.

DF Gameplay Questions / Bridge problem
« on: August 26, 2009, 12:13:54 am »
I have a 5x4 raising bridge at the entrance to my fort. It spans a 4 tile-wide moat and is controlled by a lever. I get it built and it works just fine (mostly only raise it for sieges), then eventually just crumbles into its component rocks, for no reason I can discern and with the time it takes varies. I did have a fade attack at the time of the last crumbling but the fades were on the other side of the map.

Any ideas why this would be happening?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Feldur coins
« on: August 28, 2008, 03:26:52 pm »
I've got a bunch of Feldur coins of varying metals now, I think they came off the reclaimed corpses of humans who died fighting goblins n stuff. What kind of stockpile do I need for these? The dwarves are hoarding them in their bedrooms instead of putting them in the Coins stockpile.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / second story windmills
« on: August 17, 2008, 07:58:03 pm »
I want to build a pump at ground level outdoors and power it with a windmill build a level up on Constructions. Can I construct Walls and then make another level out of constructions on top of those walls? I saw an article on dwarfwiki about this but couldnt get it to work so i wonder if its outdated.

My problem now is that when I construct walls like so:
Code: [Select]
X X
                   (X=Walls)
X X

and then try to put floors one level up like so
Code: [Select]
XFX
FFF         (F = floors)
XFX

It won't let me build the floors.

Anyway way to do this?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Hey guys, trade/caravans question
« on: August 17, 2008, 05:36:26 pm »
I tried to search but couldn't find the information I was seeking...

I built my depot inside the side of a mountain. The entrance is 3 doors wide (using the wall-removal method to get the central door) and they are controlled by levers and open unless I am drowning elves.

What I am wondering is 3 parts:

First, when traders come I still get the "They have bypassed your inaccessible depot" message, even though it apparently is accessible as they still arrive and unload eventually. What's going on there? Are some of the wagons in the caravan turning back? Which leads into my second question:

Second, Trade goods have gotten less and crappier, by a lot, recently. I'm 14 years in with 190 dwarves. I've never killed any traders but elves (via drowning), however  all caravans shipments have gotten smaller, in fact the elves are the ones still bringing the most, unfortunately just a bunch of crappy cloth. Could killing the elves be angering the other traders? Why are they bringing less stuff? Which leads into my third question:

And Third, Could it be that I'm selecting goods wrong in the trade agreement screen? I tediously go through and set everything I want to 100%  and leave everything I don't want at 0. They usually bring a couple of the things I asked for not everything by a long shot, in fact I'd say something like 1/10 of what I ask for or less. Is there a better way to weight the selections in the Trade Agreement process?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Drowning elves in 39f
« on: August 12, 2008, 08:22:54 pm »
I'm not sure if its because of the update to 39f, but these elves just will not drown. they've been sitting in a locked room full of water level 7, and they are just feeling melancholy. can elves hold their breath forever now?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / immigrant problems
« on: August 05, 2008, 01:44:24 pm »
I recently reclaimed a largish fortress. Had a lot of problems with getting the fortress up and running under the new management, they were dying of thirst even though I had multiple water sources (including one indoors) and several available buckets, one of them died that way when I even had beer available. I think I solved that with Zones, but now I'm having a weird issue:

My immigrants are just hanging around the edge of the map they arrived on. They aren't coming down to the fortress to join the crew, and I'm worried they are just going to starve to death on the other side of the map. Is there a Zone or piece of furniture I need to place so they know where to go?
