My dwarves spontaneously named three different Batmen today, one right after the other with no pause between. We have never even had a skirmish with the Batman, although we are fairly close to the bottomless pit and one of my dwarves got startled by one once while drinking at the brook. You clearly don't need to have actual combat to name them, it seems that dwarfs just need to get close to them for a while.

edit: i forgot to pause while typed that message, and they just named two more! five named Batmen in about a two minute period. wtf!

i dunno, some things called fades ambushed one of my dwarves. ??? never seen em before. im pretty sure they were called fades.

anyway, the bridge just collapsed again RIGHT after I built it, no enemies but a few wild animals on the map. lost two dwarves to drowning. Is it because my bridge's connecting end is built on sand? im builting it out of andesite, is there a problem there?

I have a 5x4 raising bridge at the entrance to my fort. It spans a 4 tile-wide moat and is controlled by a lever. I get it built and it works just fine (mostly only raise it for sieges), then eventually just crumbles into its component rocks, for no reason I can discern and with the time it takes varies. I did have a fade attack at the time of the last crumbling but the fades were on the other side of the map.

Any ideas why this would be happening?

turn it all into toys! iron toy boats and hammers! ::)

I don't bother to defend my TD. I send my trader back inside during sieges or extended ambushes, and if the caravanners get killed, hey, free stuff!

Maxing at 35?  No.  You can at least get up to 70 dwarves to reclaim.  I've had it happen multiple times.  I'm not sure what determines how many reclaimants you get.

Basically how dangerous your fort is determines how many dwarves you get. For example, if you have magma or a terrifying area, you will get more.

I believe the wealth generated in the previous fortress also affects it. I reclaimed an area multiple times, producing a lot of wealth in each iteration, and got more dwarves each time i returned.

Successfully led the country until you killed them?

Gee, and here I thought I was running the country. In any case, it seems to run even more efficiently when they aren't around demanding that I make crappy trinkets out of materials I can't acquire.

You aren't the country. Perhaps a county or a barony, but the country involves all fortresses. Plus, killing nobles is the easy way out. Be a man...er Dwarf.

Then I secede! I challenge any army to take my fortress by force!

Plus, dwarfs can commit crimes not related to nobles.

While this is true, there really isn't anyone around to get upset about those crimes going unpunished when the nobles are gone. I guess my Hammerer probably gets a little pissy about it but he knows he's on thin ice as it is, given that I just executed his immediate superiors via slow starvation.

"boni"? is that a slang term for "benefits", in some romance language? (spanish, italian, french?) or am i way off?
It's the original latin plural of 'bonus' (at least without writing that stupid elongation mark above the i). This not only provides nefarious ambiguity but also tells the reader to oh my god kiss my feet because I'm using unspeakable xenonyms to prove my unquestionable superiority. ;D

geez, i shoulda figured that out on my own, i was tipped off to the romance root from "duro" which i know has a latin root in "hard".
'
hooray for dead languages, i can say the whole pledge of allegiance (american) in latin!

Does CA have any advantages or is it just to offset dwarves being the only ones with access to moods and fighting trances?
Taking the dwarf creature definition into account, it's primarily a downside for getting certain boni while underground; dunno what those boni are, though. In principle it would be no big deal to make a race unable to trance that will paint the floor green nontheless.

I stopped using jails when I realized nobles were worthless sycophants who should be starved to death in their locked bedrooms. I killed a baroness, a baron consort, and a tax collector this way today. I'm keeping the dungeon master and hammerer because they look kinda cool. dont jail people just cause the nobles demand it, what did they ever do to deserve that kind of power?

Thats how dwarfs treat their money.  They dont actually 'buy' things with it, they just pave random floors with it to show off.  They are so bling they dont even need to wear it, they just toss around in the streets.
by the way, i lolled :)

I think it's a local government. He 'reclaimed' a human town.
Yep :) I moved into an area where humans already had a settlement. I plan on slaughtering them wholesale at some point in the near future if possible, although I'm not quite sure how to make them aggro... But I have to say they do an excellent job of defending the area from the early goblin sieges, i built some strong defenses including five elevated siege engines and a moat with a drawbridge, and I haven't had to use them at all yet because the humans are kinda badass and jsut throw themselves at the gobbies.
