Well, technically demonic spoon played the last turn, even if it was only a few months, there's nobody else on the list, so it's all yours.

DF General Discussion / Re: how old is your longest running fort ?

My longest running fortress 'Woundcoloured' ran for 10 years, without a drop of alcohol. population never climbed above 40, it was a horrible mess.

The fortress already had very bad FPS issues after cheddarius turn, due to large amounts of excess stone that had been building up over the years, Di cleaned up most of that, which made the FPS manageable again.
I think the coins are the main problem, you can't destroy owned coins like you can destroy stone, another factor may be that population levels have been rising over the last couple of years, Halltraded has been without major disasters for a couple of years, we usually had population levels below 50. But one thing to remember is to never mint coins, the economy runs better without them :)

I wanted to create something similar to thermonuclear catsplosion

Interesting... I've got no idea how to mod, but making coins spontanuously combust may work, on the other hand there might be collateral dammage to the dwarves carrying around money.

I'll PM eviltwin.

knee-equivalents

Is that a Star Control II reference?

Most likely a case where star control II has altered my subconciousness, and forced me to type that. I'm a huge fan of SC II, but did not know I took it from there :-). Dnyarii mind control I guess...

Hey guys, how about we cut turn  to a week...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Right now I've managed to crawl to the end of granite. I guess we need some serious hacking here, something like purifying magma rain or wholemap cavein. We have thousands of stone and coins and other crap, the surface is half covered in vomit and dwarves wear several pages of grime. I'm currently working on the last one, but I don't know if I'll have enough strength to finish it.

Let us know if the situation is improving, I hope we can prolong the history of Halltraded for a couple more years. (though apparently it leads to suffering for all involved both in the game, and those playing it.)

I've got some ideas for a new game I'd like to host, but I'd prefer to wait untill the new version is out.

DF can even bring the mightiest computers to their knee-equivalents. It only uses one core, so it won't make optimal use of your machine. There are a lot of factors besides population size that have an influence on FPS. What kind of map are you playing on? How large, and how many Z-levels? Is there a lot of liquid flowing around? these all influence the game speed. Then there are things you can actually do to speed it up: make sure you don't have too much useless stuff lying around (mined stone, coins, anything in large numbers) having 10.000 mined stone on your map will slow the game dramatically. Also is there a lot of blood/vomit on your map? There's some kind of bug where it keeps spreading, this is also really heavy on the CPU (search the forums for more info on that)

Evil grass should grow faster in blood stained tiles.

Don't fall asleep on the evil grass, you will regret it.

Hey Bamboo is a grass too. Grass that can grow, depending on species, a meter a day up to 38 meters high and 80cm in diameter. Hehe i hope there is bamboo in this release.

Well, the panda is on the list of animals you can vote for, it would be kind of dissapointing if their presence in the game would be limited to a message in legends mode saying that they died out, because of a lack of food..

Oh, I guess then it'll get better when they die then.  ;D
By the way, we did get elven caravan?

Yes, those are the ELVEN TRADERS!!! he was referring to.

And how did I kill the fps so bad? (much?)

He asked because we were at war with the elves since my turn. Seems peace has been restored somehow. (but I say we kill the elven merchants just to be certain they don't ambush us again)
I may check the FPS tomorrow, need to get some sleep now.

The kakapo. It's so dumb, it's forgotten that it's forgotten how to fly.

This leads to it running up a tree to escape a predator, taking flight, and landing in a graceless heap on the ground.

If ever Mother Nature picked a species to embody DF pathing logic, this would be it.

Ah, yes the kakapo...

A good friend om mine once joined an expedition to shoot a nature documentary of these flightless birds, they finally found one after searching for a long time. It turned out it was not the innocent friendly little bird they expected, in fact it misbehaved quite baddly (not being able to find a mate, it vented its 'frustrations' on random small creatures, some of which did not survive, it actually got worse than that too, but I'll spare you the details). in the end they decided most of it really was not suitable to be aired on television, an endangered creature like the kakapo really can not use that kind of bad press.

So yes, DF needs kakapos

Captain Mayday, this is amazing!

I just want to thank you for how much work you have done and how much it has improved my DF experience.  I've been using your tilesets since 40d, and they really are impressive.

Also, for data sake, my accomplished herbalist in a mixed wilderness/joyous wilds biome is only harvesting "mangrove" for what it's worth.

I can confirm the mangrove herb thing, this time in an evil biome. My herbalist seems to harvest quite a few of them, but they are not put in the food stockpile like other herbs ( I managed to find one brass berry, that is properly stored).

Any news yet?, if you can't make it to the end of spring, you could upload now as well, any progress is progress.
