Your leg names seem to go in the pattern legs a, legs b, feet a, feet b, legs b, legs c, feet b, feet c, etc.

I dunno, it seems sort of buggy to me.  Or at least bad game logic.

I mean, how are they doing it?  Picture it in your head -- the down staircase definitely doesn't reach the floor of the tile below (they can't walk to there.)  So how do they manage to produce a staircase down into that floor, without building stairs in the intervening space?

Same way they dig out down stairs form above?

Actually, in this case, I revise what I said earlier. I don't know if I consider it a full out cheat, but it is an exploit at the very least.

See the Init file is where things get really sort of blurry for me. If Toady had set dwarves to Speed:0 originally then we wouldn't be having this discussion because it was "how the game was made"

Also tilesets? Come on...
That's like saying modding the Scout's Bat in tf2 to green is cheating.

Does it look different? Yes
Did it change anything? Not really.

[SPEED:x] is in the dwarf raws, not the init file.

It's probably because fire spreads at the same speed it does in dwarf mode, where days pass in mere minutes.

In the graphic resolution or the standard resolution? Or should I just copy and paste this in there willy nilly?

Must've missed that part. Put those values into
[GRAPHICS_FULLSCREENX]
[GRAPHICS_FULLSCREENY] and
[GRAPHICS_BLACK_SPACE]
instead

Alternatively, use one of the recent 40d## versions and you can change the grid size with the mouse wheel in-game.

I think the reason vanilla doesn't have metal mechanisms currently is only because no metal should work for the whole grab-bag, and siege engine parts to boot.

midis depend on your soundcard for instruments. there's plenty of tracker formats that are almost as small, but don't need a good soundcard to sound okay


A while back, they changed their music format so that it doesn't sound different on different sound cards.
