DF Gameplay Questions / Re: A few fort gameplay questions
« on: January 05, 2024, 10:54:21 am »
1. There are metal caps and cloth caps. I think adamantine makes both.
2. For sand, you need, small area with some big animals, it only needs one tile exposed if nothing grows on it.
3. There was a type of building made for nobles, with pedestals for artifacts. the first artifact you bring there usually stays, or so I've heard.
4. I don't know if there are any alternatives to making dwarves eat their veggies.
5. I would assume speed is relevant to the raid calculations, and that is affected by encumbrance penalties.
6. Raids seem to work fine without tactician skill, but I don't know any reliable way to get the tactics skill.
7. Could be an underground river, a brook covered by snow, or the place that feeds the river. If not, it might be a bug.

-Any stone can be made into a cut gem, and kaolinite is a stone. No need to fire it.
-If actual ceramic products were bugged, I wouldn't be surprised though.

Life Advice / Re: The Generic Computer Advice Thread

Looks like I solved my problem with a new bluetooth headset.

I have yet to be let down by any mid or late-gen bluetooth product.

When I talk into discord the beginning and end of my voice is ever so slightly chopped off.

My environment has background noise from the computer.

I may have fucked up by uninstalling the driver and messing it up, so I get recurring audio problems.

I'm on windows 11 using discord, and last time I had the problem I was able to fix it.
but i forgot the solution.

Sans ability to fix a driver that was uninstalled (impossible!)
How do I get windows 11 to pick up slightly lower sounds rather than chopping them off?

I keep overscoping my projects like a scrub. Currently I should be spending lots of time working.

I lose focus somewhat, and I'm not sure why. Need to get that particle effect for the flamethrower done...

I don't think people actually go through the 100 options for making a particle effect in unity, by hand.

DF General Discussion / Re: How do migrants arrive on an island?
« on: November 29, 2023, 06:08:24 pm »
The first two waves of migrants will appear spontaneously on the island.
They just sort of... appear one after the other on a single spot and this occurrence is never explained.

I'm anti "screw those people because they're not us!"

If you think that's what unions are about, then you're hardcore anti-union.
It is almost exactly that... though.
Based on..?
Personal experience.

A game about exploring underwater in a sub.
you are boxed in by reefs and rocks, in a 2d map.
fish swim back and forth and are hard to avoid.
I played this game when I was very young, over 25 years ago, probably more.

You weren't able to take that many hits from the fish, which made the game very difficult later on.
it was fairly colorful at first, but the later fish were more sharks and, uh angler fish?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Writing New Music
« on: October 29, 2023, 08:14:10 pm »
okay I read that as wanting music players... but it seems more like you want new music.
You could try giving your musicians jobs that boost creativity, like cooking, brewing, and making crafts.

There's some abstract music knowledge thing with libraries, but I don't think it's required.

Some civs will have better memory and musicality than others. (read the name before embark)

Taverns do need a large open area for performance, and the area must be clear of dwarves. Not sure if you have to assign performers to the tavern, though.
You also need to put in the right kind of container for musical instruments, and pack a few,  otherwise most performances will be 'simulates yudzak'

I don't think russia is gonna lose to a bunch of lawyers. but after russia wins, russia's vague aspirations to be free country if only slightly, will be fundamentally over.

You don't need to bring up pathos, the world is filled with enough flak already.

DF Suggestions / Re: Vampires are too easy to identify
« on: October 04, 2023, 01:41:19 pm »
I don't think vampires should be untraceable. Maybe if they just have subtle changes that people won't notice 100% of the time. Like instead of being green, they would have a slightly greenish tint. That seems good. Or dwarves can spawn bald but also vampires are usually bald. So you can't be 100% sure based on that one fact.
Make it a challenge or something rather than removing it outright.

Then there could also be aspects of dwarves that obscure the fact. Like say a mutation or other blessing that makes dwarves have different colors.

also there should be a small chance the vampires are just easily traceable. a little variety.

General Discussion / Re: Twitter is Dead, Long Live X!
« on: October 04, 2023, 01:13:47 pm »
Yea no, I use a separate email and browser for twitter.

There's a term for advertisements tracking you beyond sites that use their api, but I'm just gonna call it cross-tracking.

Twitter advertisers or twitter themselves has fingers in every pie. I am un-nerved by all the targetting advertising pursuing me across the web. Can't have that shit.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Question for the armorsmiths
« on: October 02, 2023, 11:24:49 pm »
One of the major penalties for new recruits is weight, usually the armor. So that aluminum plate is probably the second fastest thing a dwarf could train in.

if you outfit recruits with like, full steel plate right from the get-go, it takes years for them to get strong enough to train at a decent pace.
Copper, bronze, and iron is about as heavy as steel, so inferior materials won't save your dwarf any time.

Also, if I had aluminum plate, I would be slapping that on one of the leading dwarves. That's just how I roll. The dwarf will just have to work around it if it's bad.

All artifacts get a free decoration from the base material.
