General Discussion / Re: if self.isCoder(): post() #Programming Thread

Why on earth would you not use a top of the line IDE that you have presumably just installed?

Details about how Crisper-CAS9 works. Enough details to be used as a passing reference in a lab setting.

It should be noted that taking on a large payload of genetic material decreases the fitness of a virus, assuming the payload fits at all.

Also note that Crispr has been around for possibly millions or trillions of years.

"I'm not concerned about the government being able to push through whatever unpopular thing it needs, because it's always had that power. I'm concerned about whether or not they'll know what unpopular things need to be done for the collective good."

Hillary promised to fix Obama care? That was originally opposed by many but done for the collective good.
Is that the sort of thing you mean?

I'm searching online and I've heard the proposal that gene drive could be used to kill the entirety of an invasive species.

Here's a question:

Is it ethical to wipe out the local population of a species?

Is it ethical to wipe out the local population of an invasive species?

What is the difference between the two?

I got a number of things I want confirmation on:

Trump is a bit of an asshat.
Trump speaks to the voter with emotional appeals.
Trump has a vague similarity to Hitler.
Trump will probably lower taxes for businesses, and hasn't outlined literally any other policy that benefits American citizens in his plans for presidency.

Trump abused tax loopholes to avoid paying taxes on 'nullified' debt.

New technologies in gene editing allow huge leaps in science, for a fraction of the time, cost, and expertise required.
We have the technologies to produce genetically modifed humans, within the lifespan of you or I.
We have the technologies to produce cures for many genetic diseases.
We may even develop the technology to extend life near indefinitely.

Genetically modified foods are herbicide and pesiticide resistant.
Genetically modified animals show unheralded characteristics such as flouresence, fast growth, and see through skin.
Children with three genetic parents exist, (replaced mitochondria)

Genetic engineering takes time, money and expertise. However, with the revolutionary new technology known as Crispr-CAS9 we can now effectively edit the majority of bacteria, plants, animals, and humans. Experiments may now only take three months, require one hundred times less the amount of money, and can be run by an intelligent high schooler with a lab.

A new genetically engineered breed of Mosquitoes has the potential to wipe out the genes of the existing mosquitoes, and as designed, end the spread of Malaria through Mosquitoes.
Gene drive, based on CAS-9 is a gene that writes itself to the opposite chromosome. This process turns the hetero zygotes produced in Mendelian genetics into homo zygotes.
This new gene is not just dominant, but overwrites all children to have the desired trait on both chromosomes.
The takeaway is this: Scientists have the potential to over-write the genes of an entire population of fastbreeding species, like Mosquito, within a year.
We can end the dominance of malaria, but so too do we have the power to genetically modify an entire species for good, or ill.

It took twenty years to engineer a mosquito that doesn't transmit Malaria. It then took only four years to engineer a Mosquito with this gene drive.

Genetic engineering is scary powerful.
Genetic engineering of babies is largely prohibited.
Genetic engineering could see a major advancement every four years.(my opinion)

All I can think of is how the AI in SS13 is a glorified door man.

Well that's not true, I think of that game about flying steam punk airships with a small crew.
Positioning is absolutely vital. How will you take care of that?

I've played wow, but I wasn't impressed! I'm just not in for the long-term social aspect of the game as much as other people.

Given that my first mmo was Runescape, and that felt great.
It felt quirky and new, as one of the few mmo's with a detailed quest system.

It's one of the less social mmo's since most things are not a group activity. You'd talk to people to get information about what is nearby while exploring Lumbridge and other areas.
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of new group things since the advent of Runescape 2 (A major engine/graphics overhaul)
Though to be honest the game is still less graphically detailed than Wizardry 8 even with Runescape 3.
I used to love the feeling of completing quests, and level ups.

Unfortunately the new quests don't appeal quite as much, and I maxed my ranged combat level.

My favorite pvp ever is the original guild wars.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Your goal is to kill the enemy team and survive.

You can play using the same perspective as quake, although I've spent a long time staring at my elementalist's backside. (just use the scroll wheel to adjust the POV)

Unfortunately the game no longer produces expansions, and is superseded by Guild Wars 2, which no longer has the same super-appealing build system.

Itsnotlogical, are you ever going to make that platformer with the spikes? It was shaping up to be a really great game.

For Euphoric Consequences, The use of , I don't know, chords? Feels a bit repetitive. Anything to mix is it up would be great, maybe a slowed down chord/progression. Or that thing where you play a less harmonic note and build around it in a pattern that is not a chord. But overall the compostion is great. I also feel the piece would fit a soothing a background music and thus should be mildly quieter.

If you want to make your orchestral music super popular give every individual a time to shine. As opposed to everyone playing at once. But you could just do that in another piece.
None of the orchestral music seemed to stand out at all, There is no climax!  Possibly due to the flute playing the entire time? I don't know.
This isn't a military lock step music where you follow the beat judiciously.

An orchestra is supposed to REALLY stand out when they play music! Your video doesn't. I don't know if that's because of the limitations of MP4 vs a real orchestra or what.

I failed listening to music in college.
