lye bearing items must be made with some random ash type of ash
(you probably did so)
but the kicker here-lye goes in food stockpiles and may be designated for a haulling task.
It counts as a liquid

they also make terrible trade items by weight
but are totally awesome weapons....
i would consider making obsidian just so i can have an army with masterpiece obsidian swords...

the reason carp are so strong is that they auto-train to legendary+5 swimming and get super-dwarvenly strength from it

swimming innate does not give any swimming at all, but carp got it

should gen it up,
it would be really nice to have 1 of: flux and iron, or adamantite, or some defining landmark(cave/town) so we have something to focus on


but most of all, a central somewhat isolated peak to be the mountainhome.

engraving is good, if you're going for "really" high attributes(otherwise its slower than mining and pumping)

search for flux, magma pipe?? pool?(just one of em, not sure) other features, low savagery, medium temprature 7x7

not gonna tell where i hit the adamantine, but i will tell i didn't hit it dead center, or i woulda hit the pits

the map has iron on the mountain somewhere as well as silver veins that make me think of platinum(galena sucks)
no gold or platinum i can see, not that it really matters to adamantine hunters

i forgot to mention, i struck it before i got any migrants. Even though i started with an anvil and smelted my steel bars with charcoal from a wood furnace to make my picks and axes....

good lord, i dug a shaft straight down and hit raw adamantine right above the bottomless pit, in the spring of my first year!
I haven't even found the magma pipe yet
in retrospect, it probably wasn't a good idea to center my fortress on it

should i pursue the adamantine now? i searched hard for a setup with flux, iron and magma, and bauxite toting civ-should i continue my steel making?
should i kill my men and go crazy hermit in the depths?????
