are the statues themed about the wrong god?

The value is drastically reduced if a wall is shared with another room.
(I actually thought it went to zero, idk)

DF Suggestions / Re: ChatGPT to optimize source code?
« on: April 12, 2023, 06:18:06 pm »
chat gpt is a black box, even if it could properly opmitize code, it would essentially mean relying on something nobody fully understands.
Mr. Toady one decided that he wants to control the dwarf fortress, code and ip, tightly.

relying on the ai, would mean if it ever breaks or needs to be changed, such a change might be impossible or un-feasible.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves climb tree for no reason at all
« on: April 05, 2023, 03:02:36 pm »
depending on the embark area and your civ's traits, dwarves will randomly climb trees just to hang out.

it's been a feature for awhile now.

of course, they don't know how to get down like a cat so *shrug.

i play dorfs, not elves!!

No seriously what traits??

Try examining the personality of the dwarf in the tree.

Uh yea, plenty of adventurers die of old age, that's why people avoid human adventurers.
If you just start roaming the overworld map with a human you get old really fast.

DF Suggestions / Re: Coop Fortress mode
« on: March 17, 2023, 01:24:49 pm »
There was at least one or two utilities that used DF Hack to run a sort of multiplayer thing.
Dwarf term, and all of it's compatriots caused innumerable crashes. It really wasn't worth it.

The game expects only one person to play and attempting to have two or more people playing the game at one time, destabilizes the internal workings of the game.

It isn't a matter of 'oh it's only more work, and toady one does work'
It's a matter of scrapping the entire game as-is and building it from the ground up.
Hiring (more) people just to test,
Actually testing the game with multiple people at the same time, with enough frequency to catch most of the bugs,
Chasing bugs that only happen when multiple people are playing.
Making features now designed to work for multiple people using Dwarf Fortress at the same time.
As well as complicating the addition of every other feature.
Not to mention all the features and secrets that Toady One would have to modify or outright remove (There's gold in those hills!!!).

With the heralding of the steam version, such a thing would force the new, paid, audience of Dwarf Fortress to sit far longer than Toady One is comfortable with.

It is an utter impossibility given the constraints.

The bottom line is that online/lan multiplayer will never be added or supported.

You can however, share saves with other players for play by post/play by email.
Saves were cross compatible in previous versions, so once the mac and linux releases are out, those should also be cross-compatible with pc.

Sometimes, a person starts a fortress. He plays a little bit and post it for the next person to work on. Then that person builds some and passes it on to the next person. So on and so forth.
As well, sometimes a single person spends months of their own time building a fortress, and then when it falls, or they tire, pass it on to another person to explore in adventure mode.
We have a whole section of the forum specifically for this:

So, it could be fun to do many things with the music in the game.
There is some demand to have control over the music.

-some people want to swap event-specific songs with other songs,
-or stop specific tracks from playing,

My suggestion is to take a look at the runescape jukebox. it's not the most highly featured juke box, but it gets the job done.
1. tracks are unlocked by being in the area where they play.
2. you can automatically play the area's track or play one of the unlocked tracks.
3. you can set it to loop, or not to loop.
4. you can change the volume, including a mute button. pressing the mute button returns the original volume level when unmuting.

Okay well that doesn't solve either of those two problems specifically, but let's continue.
The ability to sub-in songs for the pre-packaged songs. basically just drop in appropriately named music files to over-ride the prepackaged music.

People also want the ability to stop certain tracks from playing.
So, since we don't want to show all the tracks at any given time, i would assume people want an opt-out list.
So the player would decide to stop the track playing in a menu, and say 'this track should never play automatically'

there are a dozen other features, but some form of these two seem most important.

Creative Projects / Re: Can delphonso make a commercial game?
« on: March 09, 2023, 02:11:09 pm »
If it fits the theme, I might try to make a diet version of DF legends. Not really a 'game', but should be manageable in 3 hours, and is an interesting project.

As for the commerical game...christ I haven't really thought about or worked on it at all. Maybe I'll try to figure out a fishing minigame instead, or just to learn the new engine features.
Text can be... quite alot of work.

Like, there's a reason most games avoid text like the plague.
Aka it's just as much work as pictures except not as cool or interesting.

Of course, now I'm back on my discord bot making something with exactly that. (and way too much boilerplate)

DF Gameplay Questions / Checking Temperature ingame
« on: February 24, 2023, 06:38:47 pm »
Is there any way to check the temperature of a tile in-game?

I prefer to operate without DF Hack if possible.
The goal is to use nether wood to keep booze chilled, without making dwarves freezing cold.

General Discussion / Re: Reactions to Chinese White Balloon of AI Awareness
« on: February 22, 2023, 02:11:13 pm »
it's very clear some people have been taken in by this whole ai thing.

but it's important to remember, the ai is just trained on human data.
It can't do anything a group of humans can't do.
Fast does not always equal smart.

and the majority of advanced tasks you see it solve? they were carefully prepared step by step, as trained by humans.
ai dungeon, chat gpt, google search.

The ai is incapable of self-improving to any significant degree.

Most ai improvements in recent history have been from humans making the ai faster, at the cost of being dumber.

They are mere tools, advanced because humans wrote them and they were trained.

You shouldn't fear the ai revolution, because the ai revolution is humans learning to use the highest tech tools possible.
Fear the human that wields the tool.

No but you can grow the equivalent of dwarven weed.

DF Suggestions / Re: New military state
« on: January 29, 2023, 11:36:36 pm »
The training schedule defines when and how ready dwarves are to fight, at a given time.
the discipline and raw military training might be a factor too.
a group of untrained dwarves, each with their own sleep schedule, will have trouble forming up.

uh, it does sound like a virus, but it's not impossible for it to be some other issue.

you could try reinstalling windows.

i hope you have a good antivirus software install.

Oh yea, another check: in earlier versions, making the surface unpathable for wild animals, especially intricate operations of mining or large amounts of open magma, would cause lag. has that been fixed?
