DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

The lava flowed towards its target with unerring precision. Unfortunately, my goal (the army of goblins) and the lava's (those poor, poor merchants) were not one and the same.

Ouch. Time to redesign the magma cannon!

The moment I saw that article, I thought of dwarf fortress.

Which is probably kind of sad, actually.

That said, someone needs to gen a hot, barren, extremely volcanic world. It's time to colonize the moons of jupiter.

"And that, children, is how we make rhesus pieces!"

(sorry. terrible old joke, but I had to do it. sorry.)

Buzzards and rhesus macaques may not be the kings of beasts, but I think they deserve an award for sheer levels of annoyance. Rhesus macaques especially. They are there to steal your food and kill your dogs, and they will stop at nothing to achieve those goals.

Termination Deadly: Commando Killer
Ultimate Blood Soldiers of Night Island
Night of the Deadly Ultimate Night? No.

I think I like making up names for horror movies more than the movies themselves.

Anyway, the beast is quite horrible, well done Slax.

Considering the sheer variety of body parts you can knock off, things could get downright odd.

"the zombie right eye tooth pokes you in the ankle!
you really don't know what to do about that!"

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Embarking over an ENTIRE island.

I did recently come across an island that was more around 10x12. Still too much for my computer to handle, though. Froze the whole dang thing up trying to embark.

Migrants definitely arrive if you have any land at the edge though, which I find a bit disappointing. I liked trying to pit seven dwarfs against the world in the older versions.

Impressive and classy.

Perhaps you should catch another dragon, and house one in each eye? Symmetry is important, after all!

Nice. I've wanted to try this myself, but I could never find an island small enough. I think, (not certain), but I think that sieges can appear in the caverns. Though, if I remember right, being on an island will only give you access to your own civ, so that would mean no sieges regardless.

I shall follow your progress with interest, sir.

Eh, let it be. A man can like whatever he pleases.

Out of this run, I'd say I like Bloogonis'. It's the way its back end seems to be pulsating (and undulating) that really seals the horror for me.

Not the Fatal Death!

Just make sure your next artifact is a chair called the Sofa of Reasonable Comfort.

I could be wrong, but haven't some people found groups of kobolds just sitting around outside in this version? Not quite a kobold cave, but...

I do miss goblin towers. Always fun to storm/jump off the top of them.

Two of my founding dwarfs just became grandparents. I feel pleased, as I wasn't sure if that was possible.

Also, the kid has 11 aunts and 25 uncles. She shall not lack for presents.

Wondrous Towers: A sincere lack of ambition.

The Journals of Zulban Ethadardes, founder of Anururdim, apparently:

Well, journal, this has been a week to remember and no mistake!

Ok, well, here's how it started off. See, I enjoy my work. I'm an engraver, and if there's one thing you can say about engraving, it's that most folks will leave you be and let you carve out whatever you want. Even if it's, say, a portrait of the king getting scared to death by a bunch of rabbits. (he's terrified by them! He really is!) People don't mind! Heck, they no-one minds. You just to be good enough at engraving, and, hey, I think I am! Heck, I know that I am.

Ok, well, after that, I was approached by a member of the kings court. First thing, he congratulated me on my engraving skills! Yes, he did! Next thing, after that, he asked if I would be okay with leaving the mountainhomes, forever, like. What? Well, that was the start of the week.

Anyways, I got a message after that telling me to "make myself ready", because I would soon be leading some folks (well, the message actually called them "the other deviants", but what does that even mean, anyways?). into the wilderness to make a new outpost in, and you won't believe this, someplace that isn't the mountains! I don't know what the people up top are trying to pull here (my leg?), but like I said, a week to remember! Why do they want me to lead? Why would we ever want to leave the safety of these tall, homey, wonderful mountains? All of this and more journal! We just got to wait until I know what all of this means! Who am I travelling with? Where are we going? Why is the king so dang afraid of rabbits anyhow? More news will be coming soon, I hope!

((The theme of this fort is ordinariness. The inhabitants of  aren't legendary heroes or violent warlords. They aren't even competent masons. They're just ordinary peasant level dwarfs, trying to get by in a dificult and hostile world. There are no, and will be no hero's here. Anyone out there interested?)

Also, here is the embark location:
