Posting to follow thread.

Anything new the last few weeks?
Yeah, hurry up damn you! I'd have been finished by now ;D

Nice project, good luck!

Well, I was going to suprise you :)

Texture revamp with additonal material support. Ie. sandstone has a proper sandstone texture instead of a coloured generic texture.
Bump-mapping, specular lighting. Improved water. (Shader support required)
Blades of grass (the same way its done in games)
Variable time-of-day sky dome. Clouds will have to wait I think
All the building models that have been posted
New slice tool
New interior view
Smooth interiors (ie random noise is only applied outside)
Advanced screenshot capabalility
Many bug-fixes.

All of this is finished/partially complete and my gf is away next week so I should be able to get a lot done.

EDIT: Oh, and camera clipping, forgot about that.

There is an update coming. I've been working on it, but I've also being playing lots of Fallout 3 which is kind of a distraction :)

I might release something next week, but no promises. I don't think I'll be able to get everything I want into the release but there is already plenty of new stuff.

Now, some bug reports:

1. Remember how I said that all screw pumps face north? Well, east-west facing water wheels don't show up at all.

2. There is a bizarre shadowing problem where it looks like the windmill sails are somehow casting shadows on the windmill... from behind? (see the "windmill, back view" screenshot)

3. All of the models are slightly rotated in the Y axis (or whichever one is "up"). The effect is most obvious on the tables:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Thanks, those models look great!
2- I think the shadowing must be caused by the buildings being rendered facing the wrong way during the shadow rendering pass. I'll investigate.
3- I thought I'd fixed that. Obviously not!

Seriously, thanks for the effort. There will be another version before too long.

Question: How would I enable alpha transparency on my model?
That's a complicated question.

If you're running without shaders it might not be possible, sorry. I had to disable it due to a bug that I've since fixed.

If you have shaders on then it depends on a few other factors:
- If you mean alpha blending (ie translucent glass) then for buildings it's based on the type of material it's made from. Glass buildings will appear translucent, stone ones will not. If you have several materials in the model then you assign the other material definitions yourself (see the bed in objects.csv) and you can make them transparent by setting the colour in the .mat file. The format used is 0xAABBGGRR, where AA is the hexidecimal alpha.
- If you mean alpha masking then this is decided by the application and can't be changed. Again, this is fixed for the next version.

That would be great! I haven't really tested larger buildings much, what exactly was the problem?

And I've fixed the bug with walls/fortifications in the dev version.

I've just built a new gaming PC so this project is a little on hold while I catch up with some AAA gaming but I'll be getting on with it soon enough.

Perhaps I should add an option to disable it underground. That would solve almost all the problems with the feature while retaining the intended benefits (a more natural surface)

EDIT: Yes, thats a vast improvement. I should have added it in earlier, but it handily tied into another feature I just implemented which I guess is why I only just thought of it.

So it is!

EDIT: The problem is that my texture loading code loads textures upside down *slaps forehead*. I can't believe I'd never noticed, it would explain a lot

Hmm. Looks ok to me, but then I'm only a programmer :)

Heh, good to see you finally got them. Sorry I bailed on you, but I got distracted by trying to automate the screenshot/crop/upload process.

Maybe when I get it working I'll post it up, except it won't help you as it'll be Windows only.
I wrote the screenshot code for Visual Fortress yesterday. It supports cropping and rescaling of the output, and with FBOs you can also render to a different size than your viewing window (like 1680x512 with a 130 degree FOV). I'd like to add an auto-upload ability but have no idea how to go about it so if you want to supply code or just point me in the right direction I'll add it in.

Well, it might take a while. I've got quite a long list (in my head) of changes to make, but unfortunately my home PC died last week which means that testing is quite difficult.

Yesterday I had a burning goblin running around, and I wished VF could show the smoke, it would have been a stunning screenshot.
Is it possible to smoke and miasma anyway?
I'm not actually sure how smoke/miasma/mist etc is stored, I would have assumed that it was in the designation or occupancy flags but I can't see anything likely. If I can find it easily I'll probably add it in for the next release but given that the internal implementation is changing dramatically in the next DF version I won't be spending too much time searching on it.

If it couldn't read the memory it would just fail. The hidden bit is in the same filed as the water level, so if there is water on the map then it's definitely got the data.

Just to be sure, you are using version 0.802 yes? (from the screenshot I think you are)

Perhaps it's the lighting/rendering? Try the following:
- If you are using shaders try disabling them in the .ini file (check visualfortess.log to see if you're using them). Then restart the app of course
- Try adjusting the lighting effects (both with and without shaders). +/- moves the sun, and there are sliders for the brightness.
- Posting the .log might help,

I just can't think of anything else that could possibly cause the problem :/

Well, that IS strange  :-\ I have no idea what the problem is
I had that as well, but if you adjust the one of the "slice" sliders to the extent then adjust the other one it seemed to fix it on mine.  It appears to have a problem if one slider isn't "home."  I had it happen after using the slice down button to get to the level I wanted, but accidentally going past it then using the up arrow to go back up one level.  This is what appears to have happened.
Ah, that information is more helpful. I'll run some tests, but I've fixed some related bugs in my dev version already.

Warning contains mean things.

(smiles)
Also nice colosseum, did you know they use to fill the real one with water from pipeworks that are under it from a previous roman palace and have ship battles.
VF should work on Vista, but you haven't really given me enough helpful inf here. Can you load other, smaller, maps? Can you post the .log file so I can see at what point it fails?

I have tested 16x16 maps on Vista without problems, but I've never had a living fortress so it's entirely possible you've found a new bug or that something is overflowing somewhere. The best bet is to send me the map (and raw directory if it's modded) and I can test it out.

It'll work well providing they are at the top of the structure, ie don't have anything above them. If they do have walls of floors above then they will come out just as walls.
