DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Megaproject... need ideas and such...
« on: June 11, 2009, 06:26:58 pm »
The problem I keep finding with transporting magma (Which I've been doing a crap ton of. I'll have to show some of my works that I gave up on.) Keeps cooling and/or I run out of magma.

Is there any way to make magma flow/fill faster? I don't mind it being slow moving, but filling faster would be great.

Wow, that's a very cool way to design the rooms. I've been trying to find a way to make my fort a lot bigger so it's harder, that's certainly an awesome floor plan. Any more pics?

I can imagine DF helping, it's been keeping me sane and such.

Sorry to hear about your mother.

If you ever just wanna chat about DF stuff or w/e. Lemme know.

I'd also like to point out without such an amazing community of people here at the forum, dwarf fortress wouldn't be possible.

For the raw editing, it's a hit or miss. Try it, if they don't show up with it, it needs a regen.

For the Depot Inaccessible you must have a 3 tile wide minimum path all the way around the map. You could try building dirt roads or roads or floors to stop the regrowth of trees. If there is a natural wall in the way.. I'd dig it to a 3 tile wide path is the tile next to the very edge of the map is a ground tile.

I don't know about you guys, but it seems if there is a spot on the map where they can spawn and not have the wagons show up, they'll spawn there...

My bad about the episodes. -shrugs- I've been a little off track lately and Dwarf Fortress and my car has been keeping me sane. (Yes dwarf fort is assisting in keeping me sane.)

But yeah, I would like to make the gungan-like city just cause I think it'd be kinda cool. I'll have to think about it more and see some more ideas of megafortresses.

See I've already done the in the magma pipe in the bottomless pit stuff. They're easy. Magma and sand make it super easy. I'm thinking along the lines of the

castlevania castle where there is a normal castle and the exact duplicate only upside down above it. I was doing that one for a lil while until I ran out of z-levels.

or an under the ocean and above the ocean mega fortress.

(As a side note I have my max population set to 500.)

Or a fortress completely suspended off the ground connected to a sheer cliff (for mining and subterranean farming)

Yes my fort can run max pop and an 8x8 square well enough for me.

I just can't seem to find an idea of exaclty what it is I want to do.

From when I do it the magma appears at the top as globs and falls to the bottom.

Well ya, storing it is a good idea as well, just making sure everything is magma tight.

I like the skull throne and skull walls ideas. (10 skulls per wall or something)

I could then see menacing spikes being useful!!! skulls menacing with spikes of bone!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Megaproject... need ideas and such...
« on: June 10, 2009, 05:46:55 pm »
Okay so I was working on making a fort and it was huge...

It was roughly a 300 XandY tile wide and 14 z-level high pyramid and I finished half of it and tired of it after finding out that orcs were no where to be seen.

I was making a massive magma fall defense system with an enormous underground system of... stuff and got tired of the magma taking 1 year to go from 2/7 to 3/7

I then recently watched Star Wars Episode 2 and was inspired by the Gungan city how it was giant spears and under water. I couldn't find a deep enough location of water to do such a feat (so this is still and idea if I can find a suitable location. I've found a method of draining the ocean more or less.)

I then thought of just doing this an easy way and building it against a 20+ z-level sheer cliff and can't seem to find such a cliff.

I've thought about building inbetween a chasm, but they're so tiny, so it'd never be any good.

So I'm looking for ideas of mega projects that would be fun to build. An obelisk is entirely too easy. I personally don't want to do a statue of something until after the main megaproject is done.

So... Ideas? I'm in a very uncreative mood and it's killin me.

First... Magma doesn't fill from the bottom up. It appears at the top most z-level that makes up a magma pipe. So you will have to deal with falling blobs of death. Unless you stop it by quickly building flooring to stop it. That means then that you cut off a major source of magma just by building a structure inside it. If you can go by what the "magma flow" bottom z-level tile size and channel all level above that to match it's size. That will help with the refilling as well as letting you know your allowed fort size. You may run into a problem of your dwarves roasting. so a double thick wall MIGHT do the trick, but if you notice you normally get warm stone notices like 5 or more tiles away.

Best of luck. If I were you I'd do it in a standard cylinder shape semi-matching the bottom, not touching the wall edges and not having varied sizes per z-level. It'd be safest against leaks.

Refilling... that's going to take FOREVER!!! emphasis on forever. Magma refills horribly slow. Also 1/7 tiles of magma cool and so if you have many varied sizes of the z-levels those land tiles could present a problem. So the magma flow tiles and up are exactly the same and a smaller version that is your fort is in the middle.

I hope you get what I'm saying.

I've tried to do that but it seems that the cliffs aren't extreme enough for me... like they are slanted even if it is just every 2nd or 3rd level or so.

Anyone have a map with like untamed wilds at least (I'm not a big fan of just getting skeletal crap(not carp))

That has a huuuuuge sheer cliff? Like 30+ z-levels? or maybe know some wicked world gen params for such a world?

Maybe a race that's hell bent on everythings destruction... like you have to embark with an army sort of thing to survive? (constant siege or constant seek-out and destroy dwarves type of animals?)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Collapse!
« on: June 09, 2009, 05:10:34 am »
No, the wall will collapse and become stone to build with. The only allowable way to perform that is to drain water (various ways) and build a wall or drop a natural wall on it or cheat.
