DF Suggestions / Re: Creating a magic system?
« on: December 15, 2008, 09:25:53 am »
A method of magic that you can't battery. Any type of volume related to fortress size, food stores or anything of the sort has battery issues. Wealth is a good method, the more magic you use it deteriorates the condition of the entire fortress. (clothes, engravings, walls, floors, everything.) however that could get very costly.

Making dwarves tire faster from casting a spell, possible, but then you just make an army of spell casters... (limit amount you're able to have?)

If any of you played "Magic Carpet" you could collect magic. Killing creatures and harvesting their essence. Birth of children expelling extra-essence.

Could always just to the classic DnD style... you learn this spell and once you use it, you have to learn it again. That or rest inbetween castings (not cooldown, actually sleep)

Certain races detest magic use and make you gain powerful enemies.

(Okay, don't smite me for this, but I liked it and ya...) Alchemy? Casting circles? Wear to the casting circle? Larger the circle the greater the spell? A massive 100x100 tile "transmutation circle" for something (idea disappeared). Upon obtaining legendary use of circle not required, but assists in power of spell.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Tree Growing Height?

Terrain that already has trees/grass/plants of any sort should yield trees. However an extreme density in forest, doesn't seem likely. Any where that its just rock or whatever the material is for the block below doesn't seem to yield trees... normally.

I had an entire ashen wasteland suddenly become a green pasture with all kinds of trees... zombie slugmen and snailmen, but I could've sworn I was in a nice place.

Well, from the couple months I've been playing this game and recently been reading and participating in the forums. I'm very happy. The game is totally amazingly awesome and nothing to date can compare to the awesome that this is.

I was a big fan of Frontier, Cannon Fodder, Artillery, Sim Ant and a quite a few others... Tried digging a few of em up a couple months ago cause of their level of awesome. Namely Frontier and Cannon Fodder.

The ASCII Graphics are no issue, that's why this game is so amazing, you can make your own. I seriously pulled a matrix a while back... I'm sitting there playing the game minding my own business and then my lil bro walks up. "What's that?" "Dwarf Fortress" "Is that a game" "Ya" "The graphics look horrible." "What? How so?" "I don't understand any of it." "What? I know what all that is. Grass, Water, Dwarves, Camel, Etc. etc. etc." "You're stupid" He walks away... obvious lil bro response.

I want to see this game totally destroy all major video game producers. Then in a fit to try to save their company... Try to buy DF. Then Toady just says... No, I'm fine. To some ridiculously huge amount of money. Oh and graphics on par with like Oblivion and Command and Conquer and such.

DF... Eventually greatest... RPG, RTS, FPS, 3RD Person, MMORPG, Story Generator, etc. etc. etc.

Toady and Dwarf Fortress... Complete ... me?

I hope to decode all those uhm... codes? with check boxes. I know you can rez dead dwarves. Not very safe though. Rezzed dwarves seem to go unconscious a lot.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Self Sufficient Island Challenge
« on: December 15, 2008, 08:24:47 am »
Idno about you guys, but I've built farm plots on muddied floor tiles O.o Maybe I did something different...

You couldn't get trees, so any form of smelting or forging is out. I heard farming trees, but I haven't tried that mod yet.

To build plump helmets all you have to do is get a roof over the farm plot and there is unlimited food and booze. A well wouldn't be too hard.

Make sure you build on a lake that doesn't freeze, the ocean is the best bet.

So you got water, food, booze. I'm not a 100 percent on building materials. There's that farm plot tree mod thing, but meh. If you turn off cave-ins no worries about a support.

The magma idea is best for building materials, but without cheating there is no way to have a base on water, with magma and NOT go on land to move any of the stuff.

You'd run out of sand so glass blocks wouldn't work... add in bone blocks maybe? if you had plenty livestock I think you could do soap blocks...

That's the problem you run into with an island... building materials. Maybe allow a single smelting reaction for that?

I haven't fought with tower cap so maybe you could do that same as a farm plot, but just leave it muddied and hope you have an underground water source some where?

I think the trick would be a sky city. Water would be the biggest issue. Has to be 5-zlevels above water level. Only connection allowed is water pumps run automatically. Some how devise a plan to have auto-waterpumps running.

Building materials is the only thing stopping me from this challenge. How long are you alotted to build on land before you can move onto the water? If you had a smelter reaction, move could be quick, without it though...

Oh it's post is kinda long, just wrote what came to mind...

Ideas on building materials? Vanilla install or could run with tileset and ll? Smelter reaction?

Last I checked (earlier today using companion) it is a GUI.

It's easy to use. Easy to understand (except a couple things that I am slowly figuring out.)

I say always be careful and save progress before using a "3rd party program".

Game crashing after 5 hours of gameplay and no save... is never fun.

It's not buggy per say...

It's just risky business using a program that edits a game.

If you do use companion... PAUSE always before doing anything on it.

If you use it while Dwarf Fortress is unpaused it'll crash.

You can edit skills and stats and other various things. However just save if you are doing something big then try it. Nothing like playing for 5 hours, having auto save disabled, totally forget about saving and then it crashing on ya.

I say throw them off a high tower above your entrance to ward off foes (aka piss off elves)

I could see Cannons implemented. I think it should have a req. skill to make and certain mats like steel, iron only sorta thing.

Speaking of cannons and such... is there a way to set up booze traps or something else that goes boom? Without the use of lava.

What about... Removing all clothes? Is there a quick fashion? Or once it is owned it is doomed to stay in fortress forever?

What is capacity of cabinet and chest?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Underground Pool

I say you test. However if it comes from an above ground stream goes under ground and then exits or just fills pool... I'd almost want to say, expect only above ground stuff.

Test. =-D

Dwarf Companion works wonders.

However it is a tad risky and depending on what you do, could crash game.

I'd advise saving and then trying stuff out.

I had a dwarf get slaughtered by my champion hammerdwarf. Dead dwarf lost all possible body bits... heck of a clean up... then some how... I have no idea... corpse was brought to a bed and resurrected. Vanilla version. Dwarf had dark gray (missing everything more or less, I think there was one yellow thing.) About a season later... Was walking around (was sparring, after revive, wasn't military) hauling stuff, planting, etc.

I had a Flame Maiden (new game on LL.) Start to fly up towards my garbage shute (Chasm with covered bridge except single hole for dropping stuff... She wanted to come up as a dwarf dropped the iron anvil... Arms and legs came off and Flame Maiden fell with anvil...

I'm slightly confused... what exactly is the problem?

I see the square room (pic 1) with a bunch of ramps around the wall edge and a dwarf in the middle. (Was there any time elapse between pic 1 and pic 2?)

I see the pipe, with the downward ramp.

Did your dwarf dig the ramp a z level above? (Like you are one z level above the ramp?)
