DF General Discussion / Re: Will we defend the Toady?

Starcraft is better then Age of Empires II.
Total Annihilation: better than both combined.
This is very much agreed upon. It's a horrible shame the Supreme Commander did not compare to TA. Would love to get a version of Total Annihilation, just updated to "today"

I played AoEII not too long ago actually and I think it was rather crappy IMO.
I was never able to get into multiplayer SC nearly as much as I was into WCIII multiplayer.

That's pretty much it. There may be one or two things after that, but that's what it sounds like.

DF General Discussion / Re: How many people you know play Dwarf Fortress?

My best-friend introduced me, then he started playing WoW pretty hardcore a bit over a year ago or more and that's been his game. He doesn't play anything other than WoW as far as I know.

I've tried introducing friends or family, but no one is willing to attempt it. They're rather depressing and don't know why I consider majority of them as my friends.

(Also, there is a neat utility somewhere out there that lets you port a DF map into a minecraft map, and you can wander your fort as a mine-crafter. It's pretty ghetto. But it's also kind of cool.)

You can do that?

That is pretty nifty.
It is rather limited however. An SMP or Alpha Mode is limited 128 z levels and 1 level on DF is like 3-4 levels. So you're are in actuality limited to about 32 levels. So it's cool, but don't have a tall fort. Also is a bit buggy to get past the underground features. Especially hell.

Actually it's almost complete. The creator of Minecraft is saying that he is just about to send it into beta mode after he finishes a few more features.. So don't expect a 3D Dwarf Fortress at all.
Ok, I have to ask. Can I see this so called list of Minecrafts 'to-be' features? I just keep hearing people use the term 'not even close to finished in features' and others even going as far as saying 'it will have as much content as DF one day' (CONTENT, not complexity).

198 - Your computer can access the Bay12forums even without Internet connection during a citywide blackout.

It does seem that for some reason I was able to access Bay12 a lot easier, back when I was on it all the time. Even when we were having nasty weather and and iffy internet connection.

Might be some sense to that, often browsers will save copies of frequently visited webpages to make them easier to load.  You may have noticed the devlog page still showing the last post from a few days ago while everybody is talking about the newest update for example.  Some browsers save a copy of that page and load that by default instead of updating it.  Which can be helpful when you have a bad or slow connection.

P.S. At least in firefox, refreshing the page always pulls the most current one from the website.  I imagine it's the same in the others.

So yes I could say that your computer can get a DF addiction.  Accessing the forums might be tricky, but the website?  Yea that can easily happen.
I know that stuff. :P Stop trying rationalize everything! It ruins all the fun. :C

I didn't get into adventure mode until the latest release. It's pretty arcade-y for an RPG, so if you already play DF and can get your head around that then it is just a matter of learning the buttons.

Alrighty, thanks :)

I'd like to point out this is probably my biggest deciding factor for why Dwarf Fortress is so awesome. (No, not the community, although you do all rock. XD) Is that you have your RTS styled gameplay, which is something I'm very fond of. Then you have this adventure mode, which seems like it'd fill the niche of myself of enjoying games like Diablo 2. Except... more awesome.

Interesting, seems like a great idea, would be great to see it come to fruition.

I'd give adventure mode a try, but it for some reason (without a good tutorial that I've yet to find.) is beyond my ability.. or patience.

MC precautions... Lots of torches and keep things well lit.

DF precautions... More meat shields.

I can't say much about adventure mode though. I haven't really played it. Do bogeymen show up only in Adventure mode? What is a bogeyman?

I understand why it requires the resolution though. There is so much to read... so much information and he tries to squeeze it in, in a single page.... multiple times.

I only got scared in the beginning of starting to play MC. I started on Hard and have stayed on hard.

I have yet to have a Creeper show up behind me and blow to smithereens, I have yet to figuratively "crap my pants". I am however a cautious and careful player. I bring torches (lighting those dark areas prevents monsters spawn...), I bring a sword and/or a bow if I can. My opinion, once you know how to play and don't get scared of a moan from a zombie, you'll be perfectly fine.

Dwarf Fortress is a bit more scary, not in a TssssOMGNOOOO-Boom standpoint, but the, I've been spending x amount of weeks on this and am now going to attempt something... Que invading army or convenient fly titan... NOOOOOO!!!! I thought I closed up all those holes in my (name of project here)! Quickly! Build a wall! Dwarf sees titan, flees at the last second before wall is completed and your dining room is safe.

Quote from: Lord of the Rings, Gimli
Gimli: It's true you don't see many dwarf women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for dwarf men.
Aragorn: [whispering] It's the beards.
Gimli: And this in turn has given rise to the belief that there are no dwarf women, and that dwarves just spring out of holes in the ground!
[Eowyn laughs]
Gimli: Which is, of course, ridiculous.

I watched all 3 of the extended versions of LOTR last week and this is what I think. Thank you Gimli.

I've always wanted to build on a sheer 100z (never was able to use more than 20 levels) 30-40 z sheer cliff with a straight-ish river running right into the middle. The sheer cliff would extend from one side of the map to another. I like uniformity. A pool or lake in the middle of the cliff would be pretty cool as well.

I've found "relatively" sheer cliffs, the did have a bit of a slant...

Oh! The one I really one.. is an overhang. Like an overhang 30-40 z's over the ground that extends quite a sizeable amount over the terrain.

202 - You've dreamt in ASCII and think it was more impressive than "normal dreams"
203 - After dreaming in ASCII for so long, you no longer remember what a "normal dream" is.
