DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortess or Minecraft?
« on: December 08, 2010, 06:26:19 pm »
The point is that when two things are very different, it is still possible to compare them. In fact its easier to compare them. Its when two things are near identical that differing one from the other becomes hard.

I could compare my lava lamp to my keyboard if you wanted me to, and I could even tell you what one I enjoy more, but they are VERY different things with different functions.
I understand that, but I don't think you should compare one to another. Especially in the case of DF and MC. Yes they are similar on many levels, but you can really appreciate the differences, especially if you can play DF just as well as MC.

I got through all the tutorials (the last 4 are non-existent presently, at least from what I saw) and the game isn't that bad.

It mostly reminds me of a complex version of the old game Ascendancy.

I'm going to give it a try and see what I come across as I advance in years (which seems to be the big thing). There may be a 5 second interval thing, but the beginning is supposedly done in multiple day increments. The only time the second or minute intervals seem to go into use is in battles (from what I read).

It's a bit confusing, because there isn't a main screen. There is the initial task-bar you get and all the screens after that, you have to toggle open, even the system map view. I was also reading that the Conventional start is probably a bit easier on a beginner, seeing as you have to learn a lot about the initial structure of your first planet instead of starting off space-worthy.

My father will be most interested in the game, most likely after I get past understanding the game and then helping him figure it out. He's been playing a game of Empire Deluxe for the past 10 years. http://www.filebuzz.com/software_screenshot/full/empire_deluxe_enhanced_edition-49213.jpg ................... YES 10 YEARS! It's a massive world he generated way back when and he plays it very little here and there. Some times he leaves his computer to go do other stuff while the enemy computers take their turns, it takes a long time.

That's probably what Toady should include in the next release. A tutorial world. A pre-genned world that is in every download of the game, so that someone could take the time to write a tutorial, for the tutorial world, that way everyone is on the same page. At least for the beginning.

-pre-post edit-

@Blackdutchie - I read these tutorials and it went smoothly. Everything went together perfectly and I didn't run into any problems of me not having stuff on the tutorials. It at least got me past that hurdle of understanding what is going on... for the most part.

However, it has been said before and I think it is true... They are two totally different games and shouldn't be compared to one another.

Go read a few pages back, then tell me you like apples!
I like green apples and those easy to peel oranges, so it's all good :P (Yes I went back and read, more of skimmed cause there is a lot of reading...)
My opinion stills holds firm seeing as I could go between the two and experience two totally different environments and stuff that happens. Hell for a while I was playing DF and MC at the same time. The only thing about MC that drew my attention away is I didn't have to be so involved in the game. With that said... DF is a lot more like an Watermelon, Orange, Pineapple, etc. and MC is a lot more like a Pear, Apple, Strawberry, etc.

Well, anyone that thinks MC did it first is a dunce and should probably read up on DF and MC.

Also any publicity that DF gets that actually attracts new players, is good publicity IMO.

Now we just need a very good step by step guide like the one I read for Aurora.

Well for the last few months, Minecraft has been the game I've been playing most. I however will have to say that Dwarf Fortress is by far more interesting.

With Minecraft, it's all fun in the beginning because you have nothing, then your whole goal is to get a decent structure where you are safe to go about your business and then get diamond tools. Well, once you get diamond tools, you kind of hit a point where you don't need anything else. I think that's the main thing that stops me from playing single player, is that you hit a wall and once there, there isn't much you can do at all, at least with multiplayer you have stuff you can do with other people. (It probably gets boring for me, because safety is my number one priority.)

With Dwarf Fortress I've played for over 2 years. I only ended up getting bored of DF cause I cheated :P It became habit as well. It was terrible. The game does have a lot more to offer than MC does IMO. It doesn't get dull so quick.

However, it has been said before and I think it is true... They are two totally different games and shouldn't be compared to one another.

So I'm giving the game a try and... wow... This is in my opinion more complex than Dwarf Fortress, but that is probably, because I know how to play DF well.

I just finished tutorial 5 and I haven't even advanced a day in game time! This is brutal, but I'll keep you guys posted on my progress.

... That pic is from january 2008. Three. Years. Ago.

I don't think that'll happen ;)

Since the gauntlet has been hurled, and I've never tried doing this before..
(If the original creator objects, I apologize..)

That's brilliant! Love the colors as well, seem greatly fitting.

Thank you :)

I guess it's a you have to play it to see what in-game looks like.

I'll have it a go I suppose ans see how things go.

Almost sounds like from that initial post, like the old game Ascendancy. Loved that game to death.

I was looking for pictures of in-game, I found one.. that was it. All the others were attachments or something that only showed text and no picture... maybe I have to make an account? Is there no videos of it either? I could find anything off google. I wasn't sure what to search for... Aurora was too generic.

I know it is Siquo, but I didn't see it till now, seeing as I used to very rarely venture from the modding forum.

Some great things happened 3 years ago, this just happened to be one great piece of art. :P

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Could I request that this picture be refined? Like things sharpened up and color added? It's an absolutely awesome picture IMO.

Also if you do some photoshop magic or w/e, could it be 1920x1080?

My art skills are nill, so I'm asking someone to kindly do so. My older brother the art student at Seattle Art Institute doesn't have any desire to do so :C Pay 1500 ish dollars a class to become a great graphic artist or whatever it's called and he won't even take up this challenge/request...

DF General Discussion / Re: Will we defend the Toady?

So I don't really know where the thread went, read the first page then skipped to 14...

So I don't know if this is still on with the current topic, but...

DDoSing is stupid and causes more trouble than good. I've been part of a large Minecraft server that has it happen all the time and it's killer on servers.

I do not believe anyone has the right to behave that way. It's wrong. People play the game, because they like it. It takes time to program a game and even more time with you have to deal with attacks against your company. They're acting like a big bunch of greedy nobles.

I would defend both Toady and Notch. They have produced working on producing both exceptional quality games in spite of big game developers and make decent money. However Notch does make a whole lot more...

The whole learning curve to Dwarf Fortress is probably its best defense. There is no reason for anyone to want to attack Toady, because of it's a donation game. You can play for free and have all the content, but donating makes it just that much sweeter... to know you helped, even if it is just a little.

Minecraft has a VERY tiny learning curve and this allows any run of the mill 13 year old to do whatever he pleases. (See griefers) I help out in a creative server. http://cstminecraft.tk/ Which is presently not working for me... Been a part of them for 3-4 months now and enjoy everyone's company aside from the constant flow of griefers. However the ban hammer quickly resolves that issue. I also play on one of the really big Alpha (SMP) servers... http://godcraft.com/ who even though they are pay to get in, still under go a small flow of griefers. It angers me that people would do such things. Enough about MC though.

I've been a part of DF much longer than MC and would most definitely should the need rise assist Toady best I could (as far as I'm aware he lives maybe 15 minutes away from me?) Especially after having the chance to meet him, he really is a wonderful guy. I wish I had the chance to meet Notch when he was up in Bellevue or whatever. Is like a 2 hour drive to where he was at and didn't have the time... :C

Both people worth rescuing during the zombie apocalypse, however I would spend time rescuing DF community members (you guys all rock, even with the slight case of insanity dwarfanity) before I even thought about MC people.

Looks like they get pillaged seasonally (3254 divided by 798 is roughly 4). Guess it takes the place of raking and spring clean-up.  ;)
Instead of that it's the memorializing of all the corpses some how before they get haunted by rock musicians.

(I posted that song cause it's posted on this thread by a member.)
