Play With Your Buddies / Re: OASIS---Let's Play

Well if EuchreJack likes it, I guess I'll have it be all-Screenshot then. The rest of the Tutorial pictures will be uploaded, but after that, expect the pace of this LP to be at a glacial pace.

I've heard it's good, but apparently you're not supposed to read the book unless you're the GM, so I never read through it in case I ever play.

Actually, if this is similar to the XP edition, there is a Red clearance section, which you can read, and the Ultraviolet clearance section, which only GMs can read. There is also the Little Red Book which just had all the information in the Red Clearance section.

As a GM, I expected all my players to have already read the Ultraviolet clearance section, and becomes rather surprised when I hear reports of players not actually reading that section.

Do we know why Eastern Siberia and south Korea attacked the DPRK?  ::) Did they have a death wish or something...

I know this game was released before HTTT, but I think the Casus Belli system would have added lots of flavor and understanding.

Oh wow, kinda forgot about this thread. Uh...5 players seem a bit too "small" for a game about conversion, since it would turn into what is essentially a single "random lynch or lose" style game. I'm going to...uh...cancel? :-\

Other Games / Re: Invest-a-Game (Game Idea Thread)
« on: December 13, 2010, 08:51:20 pm »
So, yeah, if you're all like me, you've probably got a load of ideas floating about in your head and a general apathy (or just lack of ability to learn) towards learning programming and trying it on yourself. So, might as well throw it out onto the internet and hope some idea-starved indie developer (lol, yeah, right, usually they're making crappy flash games :p) will snatch up on it and fly away with it to merry game making land.

I actually was considering making a thread stating that I am willing to convert your game idea into a reality, so long as you agree to let me profit off your idea and make sure you don't receive a penny from it. I haven't actually made that thread yet, because I'm already busy with converting other people's game ideas into reality such as the 1984 Game and the Fall of Rome Game. I realize that if I can't make those requests, then I see no reason to make that thread other than to be seen as a laughing stock. If I do finish at least one of them, then I'll make the thread, likely both here and on SomethingAwful.

I even got a name for the "company": Corpse of Io. Hopefully nobody gets what that refers to. Hopefully.

EDIT: I also like to point out that I consider myself to be the "game designer of last resort". If you can make the game yourself, do it.

Mafia / Re: The McCarthyism Game

In, pending promise of there being at least one Communist.

Oh, and I missed this. Yes, there will be at least one Communist.

So how few people are you willing to run this with exactly? :-\
I don't know, but I'm going to suspect that I'll have to modify the last Victory Condition of the Communists if we have less than, say, 7 players.

I also found a loophole in this game which I have to fix before the game gets broken: You cannot vote No Lynch, only vote to blacklist someone or vote to End Lynching.

I will not say how many Communists they are.

Good point, Leafsnail. I have it that if the Communists indoctrinate him, he commits suicide. We don't want another Ghost-like role.

Mafia / The McCarthyism Game
« on: December 11, 2010, 11:20:08 am »
It's been a long time since I ran a Mafia game, so why not? Rules of the game are inspired by this, with some 'modifications'.

Roles:
*Communist - Goal is to outnumber the Town outright OR to survive when the Town votes "End Lynching" OR to ensure that the Town's number is reduced to 5 or less if there are no Communists (this is to discourage the Town from engaging in a self-destructive witchhunt). The Communists can choose to send one of their members to “indoctrinate" a Vanilla Townsperson at Night, turning that person into a Communist.
*HUAC Member – Responsible for attempting to identify the communist members (2 attempts per Night). Its investigations will come after Communist indoctrination. The HUAC Member is immune to indoctrination, and he will receive a message telling him that he was indoctrinated, and who attempted to indoctrinate him. If the HUAC Member is indoctrinated, he commits suicide.
*Vanilla Townspeople -No powers.

Game starts at Night, allowing for the Communists to "indoctrinate" an individual off the bat and the HUAC Member to investigate.

In the day, Vanilla Townspersons may vote to "blacklist" an individual. Blacklisted individuals are removed from the game, but do not roleflip. Vanilla Townspersons may also vote "End Lynching" to end the game, or "No Lynch" to just move onto Night without blacklisting anyone.

Town wins when Communists lose.

...yes I know that in previous games, conversion mechanics mean that the Town has an incentive to work with the Mafia in hopes of conversion. I think I'll keep that in to have the whole "fellow traveler" vibe.

I think it'd just be better to just watch SA Goons finish LPing Pathologic successfully, and spare yourself the agnoy. The goons are right now on the last day of the Bachelor...after only a couple years.

Gamefaqs have an incomplete guide of most of the missions in the game. Go for it.

I mean, I finished taking pictures of the entire Tutorial, but I soon began to realize C+P the pictures is sorta a bad idea...if I do Oasis again, I'll see if it is possible to make it a video LP (I haven't had luck with it).

Curses / Re: Making the Constitution active in LCS.
« on: November 26, 2010, 08:19:48 pm »
Just so you know what's already in the game: The Supreme Court has a "inherent bias", which only L+ and C+ justices can ignore. The court leans conservative on gun control and liberal on "flag burning" and "free speech".

Since one of the Court's powers is to interpret the Constitution, I think new amendments should serve as a way to enforce a 'bias' in the Court, either left or right, and not actually create laws per se. Congress (and The People via referendums) should be free to violate the spirit of the First Amendment by burning books...but the Courts can step in and prevent that.

First, they're already dead.

The article itself said otherwise, which is I why said they were about to die...but perhaps the situation has changed so that they are now dead instead of waiting to die.

Quote
Second, they are all outside of my monkeysphere. Even if I feel sad about their deaths (and I do), I can't feel as bad about it as if a relative of mine had died. I've never met them. I don't know their names.

It sounds cruel, but that is why I haven't commented. I don't know anything about it, and I wasn't effected as heavily by this as I could be. In my mind, as well as numerous other peoples' minds, they don't exist as real people. I can conceptualize that they are humans in a faraway land, but I don't know enough about them to know them as people.

It sounds cruel, but what would happen to us as a species if every time we thought about World War 2 everyone committed suicide because of the sadness caused by tens of millions of our fellow humans dying?  :-\

NOTE: I concur that this was a tragedy, but you seemed to be surprised that we weren't all hit at a personal level.

Well, I don't think I want to call for observers to have a personal attachment (that the monkeysphere provides)...but I am arguing against discrimination of another kind, that of the cause of death.

It appears as though that humanity has some dislike towards death and dying (mostly because they then wouldn't be living). It should imply therefore that humans' dislike of death should extend to ALL deaths, and so any news article about death should provoke some manner of dismay.

Usually, that is not the case. There seems to be more focus on certain "types" of deaths than others, both in the media and in our own society...for reasons I'm not entirely sure. Death by artillery fire is considered a horrible tragedy, but if it is death via mining accident, we just move on. Death via school shooting, versus death via obesity. Death by terrorism, versus death by car accident. Death by AIDS versus death by old age.

The cause of death should not play any role in determining how much attention is paid to those deaths. Death is death, and we should treat all instances of death equally, which I originally felt was not the case here.
