Are planes still as broken as they were a couple of years ago, or have they balanced them out a little? Planes were more or less an infinite money cheat since they're far too profitable. Lots of servers used to disable planes because of it.

I used to play an awesome combo of newGRFs, but now I can't remember what they were called. One replaced the trains and rail cars with real historical models, either american or british. I think they were a bit slower than vanilla trains, but could pull a lot more wagons. And they looked great too, especially the steam locomotives. Another changed the value chain a lot. It added some new cargos, mines and oilfields had a maximum total production, and factories would only accept a certain amount of raw materials every month. I think it changed the look of a lot of buildings too.

So for some reason when I got on the server just now, my company was no longer password protected. Doesn't seem like anybody touched it, so unless it happens more often, I'm fine.

Also, twice now, I have left the server for a few hours and upon returning, all of my planes are missing. I find it hard to believe that they crash that frequently, especially because bluerobin still has 16 aircraft.

I watched it. One of your planes crashed on the runway. Then 3 or 4 planes crashed into the crashed plane...

One of Bluerobin's planes crashed too around the same time, killing 402. I think it crashed into a stadium for good measure. The environment generally felt a bit unsafe for a while there.

Can the topic creator put this in the first post, please?

How to stop the goddamn Doom-Fan as Shaman

Move as necessary to not die if it's a moving-floor level, spawn large board with yellow C-joint on the end of it, pressing spacebar to make it transparent, welded to the center of the fan

Much more fun to attach a large plank to the end of one of the fan spokes with a blue joint. Cleans out the map in no time at all.

It's a complicated story actually. Only thing shared by Sweden and Norway between 1814 and 1905 was head of state and foreign policy (basically Norway wasn't allowed its own embassies or consulates). This became a big political issue since Norway had a large trading fleet while Sweden didn't. The second half of the 19th century was dominated by political wrangling, secret deals with foreign powers and serious military buildup. The swedish king eventually budged and war was averted, a deal was made with the kings of England and Denmark, and Norway became independent.

Would have been interesting to try to recreate something like that in a game like Victoria 2, but Paradox apparently doesn't want to. Paradox is a swedish company by the way  :o

Regarding good games, I just noticed the Monkey Island 2 remake was released today.

Baldur's gate had great voice acting, even though they sounded like cosplayers or LARPers. Somehow it fitted the game perfectly.

Oblivion's voice acting was half the reason I soured on the game. Not just the "Voice A(1) telling Voice A(2) how Voice A(3) has better merchandise in his store than Voice A(4)" bit, but they were so uninspired and grating that I just couldn't take it anymore. Especially Imperial Male or Breton Male (not sure which) sounded like he had just woken up and decided to read out loud some random lines from a piece of paper. Which could be true.

Needs more rocket packs and pulse rifles.

Seriously though, looks very interesting. Will try once I get home from work.

Yeah, this is probably the only game where idiots and assholes add something worthwhile to the experience.

On the other hand, I'm not really a fan of the whole "shinier is better" route that games are taking nowadays, but that's because the laptop I use for games is pretty shitty. So, you know, selfish reasons.

Is that the only reason? I have a low specs computer as well, but am not very happy with most modern games (when I have played them elsewere) because they favor eyecandy over everything else. Granted, not every single one of them, and granted, this has always been a problem, to some extent (not as much as nowadays, methinks). But as far as I am concerned the phase of buying things basing myself exclusively on the "OOH SHINY" department is long past.

If it's any consolation, this Nintendo bigwig agrees with you.

My belief is we should not blame the bad economy for the cause of slow sales of video games. The slow sales must be due to the lack of great software that everyone wants to buy. [...] I think the whole industry should be more cautious about how we act and how the general public perceives us. In the past, the formula was to make the computer graphics more gorgeous. It used to fit the taste of the majority of the gaming audience, but it doesn’t work so well in this day and age. It’s more difficult for us to come up with something new and different and show people how different we are. The whole industry has to recognize that.

In a minor defense of reviewers, their readers aren't getting any better either. Wasn't there some shitstorm over a reviewer giving Bioshock a mere 9.5/10, leading him to get fired? Then there's the advent of (very noisy) "pixelcounters", who have successfully badgered the tiny, populistic mind of some reviewers into thinking the quality of the HDR lighting is what you should judge a game by.

For reviews I generally go to Rock, Paper, Shotgun or similar, although I rarely base my buys on reviews anyway.

Yeah, the servers are about as flaky as the gameplay and the players.

Could give them a fast horse, a bow and plenty of arrows, and use them as horse archers. Those tend to survive longer while racking up some kills too.

Final day of offers, looks like they put some of the earlier one-day offers back on for a second go just to wring out the last few pennies from us. I cracked and got thief 3. Maybe it's time to get a L4D game too.

I wouldn't mind if the MMO market died. Those things are more parasites than games.

Grim Fandango, if you can find it.

If you want first-person puzzle games like Myst your choices are a bit limited though. I mostly remember the old ones, so if you don't mind horribly dated graphics and sometimes quirky interface you could look at:
The B.A.T. series
Gateway series
KGB
The first Dune game, to some extent
Rise of the Dragon, and its sequel, Heart of China
