« on: April 04, 2010, 10:34:25 pm »
I'm wandering around underground and see many edible bushes (mainly plump helmets) that I simply cant eat. What gives?

Hey I was messing with the arena mode and saw that blood flowed with the water when mermaids fought. Is blood a liquid the same way water and lava is?
Could one kill enough creatures to make a 1/7 (or more) pool of blood?
I rather like the idea of making blood for the blood god (though I'm sure it will be mixed with 'dustings' and 'piles' of vomit.
Normally I bring rather low supplies of food and have my dwarves fish for the first few seasons until the farms are built up to the ridiculous point that no army in dwarfdom could possibly eat all of it, so I would normally recommend fishing as a good starting-point for someone who's nervous of irrigated farming yet. Normally.
Unfortunately, there are no fishable fish in .31. Even after designating a fishing zone over a pond that I can see turtles hanging around in, a message comes up claiming there are no fish to be caught.
And hunters are currently quite buggy and require a lot to manage because they're not behaving as they should.
Sooo... for the current state of .31, for someone who doesn't want to try irrigated farming yet, the only real answer is herbalism + surface crops. (And hope there's no acid rain.)
I think you guys are all really missing the point here. You're messing with the combat system in the Arena mode a lot, but only messing with freaking megabeasts.
Megabeasts are different. A LOT different than they were before. Look at the raw files, get an understanding of the absolute differences in size between a BC and a Dwarf. Yeah, they shouldn't be so invulnerable, but;
In dwarf mode, combat between a moderately skilled dwarf with a steel battle axe and no armor against a several troglodytes and an ogre resulted in swift execution of all the monsters by the dwarf in ways that would be utterly expected. Limbs go flying, blood sprays everywhere.
Individual creatures are no longer clones of each other. Their abilities to resist damage, recover from damage, move, react, and stand their ground are all highly variable. Combat depends on much on recruiting a dwarf fit for the job as it is in getting their skill at handling a particular weapon up.
Run a few fights against more reasonable opponents before you call everything into question. Why Bronze Colossi are definitely broken, this is because... Bronze Colossi are broken, than the whole system being broken.
Plant_standart.txt in the DF\Raw\Objects folder. Remove the [WET] tag and make sure there is a [DRY] tag. If that doesn't work, I sadly can't help you. You'll probably have to regenerate your world.
I, for my part, enjoy the fact that you have to irrigate underground plants now. Why don't you just switch to above ground plants like strawberries if it doesn't work?
