You're assuming that 1 unit of charcoal weighs the same as 1 unit of wood.

I should also note that on screen representations can be changed by different tilesets, so there's no obvious reason, apart from telling the distance, for them to appear different on screen.

Although I agree about the aesthetics, pillars cannot be collapsed, while columns can be. Also, it appears they are far thicker, as dwarves cannot move in the same tile as a pillar, whilst they can a column.

DF Suggestions / Supports, towering into the sky!
« on: January 21, 2008, 07:47:00 pm »
I had an idea in regards to expanding Supports a bit.

Personally, I like giant rooms, and although Supports aren't currently necessary for keeping the roof up, I figure it may be nice to have them there for aesthetics.

In any case, down to the suggesting.

I would like to see supports capable of spanning multiple z levels.
I figure this could be done in a similar manner to bridges, with identical material costs, but vertically.
The player would select a floor tile, and position the support. He could then extend the support vertically upwards from the floor tile, with the selector X turning red when it ran out of room, as with bridges. It would then go to a materials selection screen, as do bridges.

Probably this should require access to all levels the support occupies, so the dwarf would have to build it a level at a time. This would also necessitate them being able to be built from an adjacent tile.

As it stands, a secondary weapon right now helps with parrying.

Hmm, actually, once rewalling in... remotely fired ballista towers anyone?

If that's the case, it's really going to be a function of strength and speed to determine how long it takes.

Giant Cave spiders can already more or less fly by building webs they can walk on.

Well, I know that's planned already, I just figured something that would allow creatures to pull themselves up onto ledges would be nice, considering the mazelike structure of most mountain areas.

Or something like it, anyway.

My suggestion is to allow creatures with [grasp] limbs to clamber up a single level onto a ledge above. To do this they could possibly be placed as 'on ground' when moved to the tile on the level above.

This would be incredibly useful for moving as an adventurer, and would make walls less of a gauranteed thing for defence, as goblins could simply climb up on them.

I'd just like to state that these are all good ideas. Especially the picking a building material one.

Sort of, apart from having the current options for existing holds available on the first screen.

This is about the third or fourth time this has been suggested, and Toady, as far as I know, will implement a better menu, eventually. It doesn't hurt to give him ideas on how to lay it out.

how about this?
Break down the wrestling into two menus.
The first menu has, at the top, things you can do, currently, with existing grapples. It is followed by options of using a body part to grapple (i.e. 'use left hand to grapple', and this then links to a list of grapple points on the enemy (i.e. 'grapple dragon's left leg')

The numpad thing wouldn't work, due to the different body types, ie. scorpions. Not to mention all the different ones I have started populating my game with.

Personally, I really dislike unlockable content. I don't like being forced to play parts of a game when I just want to play with all the content.
